While they have a one-year program, I'd be absolutely shocked if it was compatible with a football schedule.

I am pretty sure that my brother told me that there is one or more football player(s) in the one year program.

I don't know about Brennan Scarlett guys:

Missed sophomore bball season due to football injury
Missed junior bball season due to football injury
Missed playoffs senior football season due to aggravated previous injury
Missed junior year in college due to broken hand
Missed most of senior year in college due to ACL tear

That's injuries sidelining him 5 of the last 7 years. I'm all for adding depth and experience but I sure don't see this turning out as good as the Riggs transfer.

Why does it have to be as good as the Riggs transfer? That was a coup for the Irish, it's still a good thing, even if its a temporary bump in depth. There is no downside here.

also don't forget just maturity wise/scheme understanding/experience/ and strength are more of an advantage for bringing in Brennan

There is no down side to adding Scarlet. Worst case scenario is he never plays a down and we lose nothing.

Yea, he's a grown a$$ man that moves well for his size. Maybe he only gives us 4 games at his level of play that's a win.

This would be a great get no matter what spin you put on it. Any DL that wants to come here is welcome in my book, especially any former top 100-150 prospect overall. I sure hope that this works out!

Referring to everyone's excitement about bringing in a veteran to help us compete. The idea started with everyone talking about how great it would be to have a DL that has a more mature body having been in a college S&C program for 4 years and has playing experience to come in and fill a need. I'm hoping he has just had bad luck, but I disagree that it doesn't hurt us if he ends up injured and doesn't play a down.

If he is injury prone and has another injury this summer or very early in the fall, then he doesn't help us on the field...practice or game. Others have said it would be great to have him on the practice field but if he is injured he cannot practice either. Think of some of the players we have had the last 5 years that pretty much never saw the field in a game and barely saw the practice field. This, to me, is the downside. Without knowing his full story I have no idea how is injuries came about but we have had more than our fair share of medical scholarships lately...especially hearing there may be 3 OL with issues. Having a full 85 scholarships doesn't matter if 7 are out for the year with injuries. It puts us back in the same position we have been complaing about the past 5 years.

He potentially took the position of another 5th year option. Have no idea at this point if that is a possibility. But, if we truly luck out and get several of the recruits we are going for (Williams, Jones, etc) AND then get a huge surprise on a couple of great recruits on NSD (Marshall, etc...which I know is highly doubtful) then we will have given a spot to a sideline spectator for a year that could have gone to an ND 5th year.

4 games gives more time not to rush a younger guy. That's exactly why you take the chance imo because our season's are quite grueling and maintain a healthiness is a constant challenge. We had too many young players on defense getting snaps they weren't prepared for mentally or physically.

So if this guy had his act surgery in november, what's his likely 'back to the field' schedule look like?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but he wouldn't actually get here until summer camp, right? By then (well before actually), we'll know what our recruiting situation is, which will then inform our 5Y situation, and the program will probably have a good handle on the annual spring "surprise" transfer or two before we have to make any final decision.
So, yes, we might take Scarlett at the expense of a marginal fifth-year player - at absolute best we're talking Amir Carlisle here - and probably not one at a major position of need like defensive line. And I doubt we'd take him if we really think he won't be able to contribute because of this knee injury.
So if you're asking would I rather have, say, Jalen Brown sitting on the bench for 12 games or Brennan Scarlett who could even start and certainly play a lot but might get hurt in week five because he's had more than his share of injuries, it still seems like a no-brainer. And it's just for one year. He's not sucking up a scholarship long term.
I really don't see the downside here.

I can agree with this...depending on when we commit to giving him a scholarship. If your time frame is correct it is a no-brainer.

Just double checking as all conversations spotlight just him

My take on that is this: usually when the board gets on something that is NOT correct, the well connected members will drop in and let us all know that we are on the wrong path. When the board is onto something and those well connected members do not join the conversation then we are on the right path.

True, but in this case, why would like 10 ND coaches/personel start following a California Bears senior out of the blue?

Umm, yeah?

My point is I think the board is on the right path as none of the well connected posters have come in and tried to redirect the conversation. They have have stayed silent and let the conversation roll.

You're right, I didn't read past your first line. I meant to but stepped away from my desk for a second and didn't come back to it. My bad.
