1. Wimbush looked solid in his first start. Personally, he performed pretty much how I hoped he'd perform for a first time starter. 106 yards rushing was great and so far hasn't show any serious areas of concern that can't be cleaned up.

2. Defense appears to be on the right track. Armstead got some yards on us but I think he's much better than most people realize. Overall good game but next week will be a better gauge on where we're at, I think.

3. Yoon missed a few fg's but I'm not worried about him at all.

4. Tackling looked much better.

5. Overall great team opener. I'm certainly happy with the performance but don't want to over analyze after only one game.

6. Kmoose is better at this than me. 😃

Temple is good overall but their QB will hold them back. He missed some wide open receivers, and outside of Kirkwood they didn't do him any favors

My thoughts:

--Running game was great. Interesting that we ran right all 3 times when Dex scored his TD inside the 5. Our left side is dominant and will be utilized more during the year

--Wimbush I thought played just fine. Slow a little bit on the RPO I agree, but not too bad. Some drops by WRs that would have changed his final stat line

--Wimbush's accuracy was pretty good all things considered, IMO. His first TD was in a tight window but it was right on the hands. Go back and watch a lot of the throws - they were right on the numbers for the most part. The receivers could catch and run up immediately instead of reaching back and not being in a good body position to turn upfield.

--There were some notable exceptions which we all remember - like the 3rd and 2 pass to Alize which was off target (but he was under pressure). He airmailed some early but otherwise not too bad for a QB who hasn't played in a game in almost 2 years.

--Even on some other passes he put it only where his receivers could get it. While they weren't catches, they were there. See: Mack 1 yard line in between the 2 defenders, EQ's 50 yard bomb.

--Our defense has some work to do. We were not doing a good job of wrapping up and bringing guys down despite being in the backfield. Otherwise, I really like the heavy rotation and pressure we were getting. Look at the participation report, we got a ton of guys in and lots of freshman on the last garbage time drive.

--May be rose colored glasses, but I think Temple will be a very solid to good team this year. Their defense swarms everywhere and do not give up much by way of yards after contact. Very sound tackling. We will see how they play out the rest of the season, let's hope they do very well

Good win, lots of rushing yards. D played adequate to good, which is EXACTLY what we were hoping for in the offseason, a mere average defense to complement our offense that puts up 48 points and 600 yards!

EDIT: Other thoughts I had after posting - we need to defend the screen better. I thought DLine flashed some pressure. We played a bunch of off coverage leading to short completions against us but did not give up many big plays. But a solid win with some teaching moments is a great way to start a season.

Do you guys think our offense went a bit vanilla in the 2nd through 3rd qrtrs or did Temple do a good job of adjusting?

Just one game, but more Coney and less Martini.

This. I thought Coney played GREAT. Got off blocks and TACKLED. I was impressed.

Edit: Also loved the nod to Jaylon with his sack celebration

All the RBs can play but Dexter Williams should get more tic, imo. He looks like the best runner of the bunch.

Will be interesting to watch the tape to see who Coney is making the plays in place of.

Both Coney and Martini had 6 tkl but Coney's were more more impactful, to my eye at least.

I have no clue why Tony Jones would get a single rep over Dexter. FEED JUICE

Other reactions:
-Alize underwhelming
-ESB usual self
-D Hayes, and D Line in general surprisingly good.
-Nyles meh, but OLB's played well
-Secondary mixed bag but overall solid

Solid performance from the team overall.

Alize looks extremely rusty.

RT is a big problem, hopefully with experience gets better throughout the season.

Jay Hayes played well.

Jerry Tillery played well and was impressed with his hustle. He chased a RB 20 yards down the field to make a tackle.

Daelin Hayes is a boss.

I've seen enough of Cam Smith and Canteen already. More Claypool, Boykins, Sanders and Finke please.

Tony Jones is a good player. But Dex brings a different dimension and complements Adams nicely.

Josh has gotten really big, but I feel like he might have put on to much muscle/weight and lost a step.

Best game Smythe has played. Hope he is healthy.

I think this Temple team will have another good year...8+ wins.

If ND plays the way they did today next week they will not beat Georgia.

In person, Dexter Williams looks the quickest by far. He hits the hole so damn fast. Why he doesn't get more carries is beyond me.

Great win...always nice to win compared to last year. We do this next week then we may be over the hump. Not too familiar with georiga but we gotta play better D to compete with an SEC team. Either way much better way to start off the year. First ND game I've been able to watch from home since 2014! Much better than watching it at an inmates cell! Lol

Forgot to mention Martini played well, Coney played better and Bilal is still not very good.

Also forgot that Drew T played the best game of his career.

Obviously watching on TV I couldn't see every play, but seemed Nick Watkins was lock down today.

Tackling is much better fundamentally
Still need more physicality up front on D
Wimbush needs some polish but I guess expecting him to come out super beast mode was unrealistic
The RB and OLine depth combined makes me feel better about the season long term...

Couldn't agree more. I know that Kelly loves Jones Jr.'s ability to catch out of the backfield, but when Dex has the ball he's electric.

Defense looked greatly improved, with tackling and sound assignments (especially compared to last year).
However, we're paper-thin at D-line, and our safeties are the achilles of this team. The D will go as far as they can take them.

Not enough Hayes love in this thread, and there is already a good amount. He's like a mixture of Tuitt and Okwara but can also somewhat drop back in coverage. In short he's a beast, and will be the leader soon if he's not already.

We Are not paper thin on the DLine. Only at Defensive tackle.

And yes the safeties is the weakest position on the team.

To my surprise I thought Studstill played the best of the bunch today.

-I thought Wimbush's performance was what we should have all expected. Some "rookie" mistakes but there was quite a bit of good things to take away from the game and he's exciting with the ball in his hands.

-The running game was amazing, from start to finish. A big question going into the season was would Brian Kelly actually turn the offense over Long or was he all talk? Well, after 44 carries, I think its safe to say this is Long's offense. I hope they keep doing this all year. Give Dex more carries.

-8 catches by tight ends today. I bet it took 5-6 games last season for the tight ends to get that many catches.

-I thought the defense played pretty well. I thought the run defense was a little iffy in the first half, but they put the clamps on in the second half. Only giving up 85 rushing yards in the game.

-Last season it took the defense like 3 games to record its first sack. It was nice to see them get 4 sacks today. I thought they were very close to getting another 2 or 3 as well.

-Tackling was a lot better than last year. I didn't notice too many obvious missed tackles from the stands.

-With a new DC and a new scheme, big plays was something I was looking for. I thought they did a great job at preventing the big play; the biggest play they had was a 29 yard catch and run.

-Overall, it was a great season opener and I don't think we could've asked for much better. Lets get ready for next week.

Thought this game played out as expected with all of the overhaul. D let up a few big plays, but seemed to play faster and more aggressive overall. Some busted coverages that need to be cleaned up, but I was happy with what we saw. 2 new coordinators against a team with a new coach. Hard to prepare for that, but I thought second half was much better.

I think Wimbush did well for his first start. I think our backs are monsters, and we wore them down with the 3 of them. That kind of quality coming at you all game will be tough to stop. Still kind of confused at how we get stopped for some no gainers though. Line looked good but would love someone to grab that RT spot.
All in all a lot to build upon coming up. A lot more good than bad today.

It was fun to see us blow out an opponent but Temple was not very good. Our DL looked better but top level OLs will give us serious trouble unless we stack the box.

If we stack the box, we're in worse trouble because our safeties are learning on the job and they still have a lot of learning to do. There were some solid tackles but a lot of missed ones too.

Wimbush looked okay throwing. He didn't have touch on his deep balls but his short and mid range game was pretty good. He ran the ball very well but those shots will take a toll.

RBs and OL looked very good. Sure there were a couple false starts and sometimes we didn't get enough push but we just rushed for over 400 f*ck1ng yards. Those are video game numbers.

Next week will tell us a lot about our team (as will each week after that). They are learning on the fly and definitely not a finished product but if we can shore up a few areas, we should be competitive in every game.

I agree about our DL looking better than I thought they would. They had some really good penetration and will sort out the gap integrity issues.

I don't think you are giving enough credit to this Temple team. They should win at least 8 games this year.

Yeah but, with that schedule you really have to work some to NOT win eight games...

Watching Bama FSU while flipping back n forth with the Halo game...

It saddens me. I remember when ND had defenses that could fly at the ball like these two instead of just hoping a quality team won't embarrass NDs D...
