Ugh I hate expectations.
Didn't the NBC crew say how BK put national title thoughts into their minds this season?
On one of the Zaire interviews they played during the game, he mentioned all the comments by the media in recent weeks about how good this team could be. And about what potentially they could accomplish. I'm good with a coach drilling it home, I'm not comfortable with a player listening to the media on it

BK gave shot to ND fans about the amount of Texas fans in the stadium during his post-game presser.

"... a Texas team that we certainly have a lot of respect for and their tradition and you saw how well they travel, they were here in droves"

Maybe ND should control who gets season tickets a little better then. I am done attending games at the stadium because they give the bulk of season tickets to the old alum who give money and want to sit in the stands like they are at church. Those are also the same people who likely said, "it's going to be too hot at the game, let's just sell them".

You mention two problems, but trying to fix one makes the other worse, unfortunately. Getting a younger, more energetic crowd means lowing the ticket prices, which increases the profit in reselling tickets to opposing fans. Conversely, the way you combat resales is with higher face value prices, but that means you get the old rich crowd.

All I know is the defense made me very excited. They were flying around and sticking people.

Probably my favorite play of the game was when Swoopes was in the open field on 3rd and long, thinking he would prance to the first down, and Jaylon straight squared up and drove his ass into the ground.

BVG has me pumped again. Hopefully he can maintain it this year, and we don't relive the "BVG IS A GANGSTER" threads turning to "BVG IS A FRICKING PINHEAD"

On a scale from 1 to GANGSTA, last night was Al Capone.

Anyone know when the polls will be released with the holiday weekend and a couple of games yet to be played?

Difficult to say how good ND is based on this game. Texas is not a good team. They have spotty talent. Virginia will be a better guide and certainly GaT will be a real test.

Did ESB see the field? I expected him to get his feet wet but did not see him. Did I miss him?

OLine in complete control. Malik ran the game plan with confidence and executed. We have a ton of skill position weapons, and Texas couldn't shut any of them down.

No Turnovers!!!! When Josh Adams was hit in the backfield, he clutched the ball and made sure he did not fumble.

Defense is solid, but we have a few things to clean up like our tendency to over pursue on the edge. Jaylon absolutely blew up the Texas QB's on a couple of plays!!! BVG knew when/how to dial up pressure on third downs - they just could not get any offensive momentum.

No turnovers!!!!

My daughter asked me last night why I wasn't yelling and that exited she said, "you are just sitting there smiling". I told her that it has been a long time since I have seen ND play such a good game....

The 10 freshmen who debuted for the Irish are: Justin Yoon (kicker); Josh Adams (running back); Nick Coleman (cornerback); Te’von Coney (linebacker); Nicco Fertitta (safety); Aliz’e Jones (tight end); Equanimeous St. Brown (wide receiver); C.J. Sanders (wide receiver/punt returner); Jerry Tillery (defensive tackle); and Dexter Williams (running back).

Sucks to have Folston go down im really hoping its not serious. If it is though the good news is CJ looked like a beast, dude wouldnt go down, and Adams looks like he can be a solid player too, if our O line is as good as they seem we wont need a superstar at RB.

All parts of the team looked great besides KR/PR. Missed one field goal but thats a little expected with a freshman.

Looked like Strong had the life sucked out of him, he was crushed

Yeah, he ran tougher than I expected. And his burst is scary. Between CJ, Josh, and the offensive line, we'll have some long runs this year.

1. Malik Zaire......... no need to explain this one, but: 19/22, 313 yards, 3 TDs. But more important than the numbers, Zaire looked as poised as a 5th year senior out there. I was VERY impressed with his presence.

This kid had had everything but runes pointing to his ascendancy since before he set foot on campus, Marine reaction at Semper Fi Bowl, Dilfer and Elite Eleven (2X), gamer attitude, pensive about not playing last year (you see it in every great one), adaptation to an entirely different offense his senior year, and the depth chart clearing ahead of him. Last ND quarterback I remember with close to that kind of rise was Joe Montana.

2. The Defensive Line.... Sheldon Day, in particular, played incredibly well. He was in the backfield on almost every play, disrupting the offense. The pressure they put on the QB helped a somewhat young secondary to really look like a solid veteran unit.

I certainly agree! Nice to see Day do what everyone has been saying he could. My heart would have been in my mouth when that left tackle chopped him, except his reaction was so quick as was mine, I was already shouting, "Kill that Longhorn motherfvcker!" But nobody kid themselves : Cage was brutal, simply brutal, just as he needed to be, and Tillery had some off the chart plays. If these three keep it up and keep healthy, no one will be able to control our middle, and that sinks a whole bunch of running games there.

Also at this point I am surprised that no one is giving Romeo and Isaac more props. Those guys were both really strong at the point of attack, played incredibly fast for their power, rushed like or defensive end dreams go, and solidly filled on stunts. I cannot say how impressed I was with their play. They were nothing less than awesome!

3. CJ Prosise had a great game (20 carries for 98 yards), but he looked like less than a polished tailback. He got better as the game went along, but the first half he looked pretty awkward on the runs out of the backfield. Hopefully he continues to settle in and be productive. He looks like he could grow into a very good running back.

I am a bit confused by the middle of your point. But I absolutely agree with the ends When is the last time we have had a back start so fast? Remember, he came into the game as a number two back, with a completely different mission. And he still ended the game with nearly 100 yards! Plus, the guy was playing "man ball," he was a total animal. When did he go down without help from a couple of defenders?

4. The Offensive Line was outstanding. All night long. A couple of dumb false start penalties, but I would take that performance every week, and be very happy.

Exactly, except I wonder how much was a noise problem, and was exacerbated by Malik's voice, which doesn't naturally carry well. I was told that the stadium was as loud as anyone remembers it.

5. As good as the team looked tonight, there were still things to improve on. The penalties need to get cleaned up. Malik had a few throws that were behind the receiver, and he could work on cleaning that up a little bit. Punt Return still needs work, obviously. Also, this is a Texas team that went 6-7 last year, so I am not going to get too over the top crazy about what was a great performance tonight. But it sure does feel good.

Indubitably!

My game ball goes to Zaire........ He REALLY impressed tonight!

The other thing, Jaylon Smith was off the charts. I believe he rocked and wrecked Swoop's world! Swoops being bigger and heavier, and some thinking to do after Jaylon put him down solo in the open field. And then Jaylon built on that . . .

Speaking of linebackers, Joe kept his feet, stayed in position, and got a few good licks in also. And I see why James Onwualu is the starting Will; His play is much elevated over last year. He seemed to know where to be, what to expect, and have ample speed to get there.

Did Elijah Shumate have a stupid costly penalty? Yes. Was it a borderline bad call by the refs? Of course. But by in large ES had his thump on last night. It is a bit unfair, having a SS with the speed, range, and ability, that hits like you have an extra linebacker on the field! Hats off to everyone that played db last night; they were whole different animals than last year! The Lyght is on!

My post game observations:
1) Malik didn't play like this was his first career start at ND. Very poised, hung in the pocket, and played a great game. Even during the team walk before the game people started clapping for him.
2) Jaylon being Jaylon, I love watching this kid play.
3) Thank goodness Prosise was converted to RB in the spring.
4) All the best to Folston.
5) Great first impression by Josh Adams. First game. First touch. First touchdown!!
6) The OL blocked and blocked great, keep it up. In the end zone I sit in, after during a score all the lineman shook each other's hands as a congratulatory, Hiestand had those boys ready.
7) Our WR's have a chance to be elite.
8) We played great...but Texas played really bad, they had no answers and made no adjustments.
9) Everett who??
10) For anyone who was at the game, say it with me irish envy "YOOOOOOOOON!!"

My game ball: Josh Adams

A postscript with a few more points :

-Notre Dame had two scoring drives of 90-plus yards in the same game for the first time under Kelly . . .
Key point, doesn't matter how good or bad your competition is; this eliminates that question and gives you some answers about the team and their attitude, (let alone ball protection.)

-Fuller led the Irish receiving core with seven receptions for 142 yards and two touchdowns. The junior wideout was the team’s leading receiver a year ago and exploited the space Zaire frequently had to throw to on the quarterback’s right side.
Absolute proof at how crazy, stupid, or blinded the national media and experts are about Will, leaving him off of every All-American team! This comes up and there is going to be a lot of 'splainen to do! (Asshats!)

Exactly! Also, when have we ever had a first game freshman pass protect so well?

I believe we will find that Texas is a better team that Virginia.

(Between the lines : blitz-happy Tenuta is really fucked!)

Texas made good adjustments all night, their coaches were on top of it. Nothing worked.

Of course the biggest test in a lot of ways for the year is GA Tech. With a dominant and/or injury free solid performance, we should feel pretty good about matching up against anyone else this season.

I'll eat a whole bunch of crow right now because Adams looked locked in and ready to go! Good for him!

Team was physical and you can tell they want to hit people. Losing Folston will hurt but how much is a wait and see game. Texas D has some good athletes and to make them look that bad was impressive. Very encouraged by what I saw. Love it, Go Irish!

I saw Charlie get in his players faces a couple of times, but I don't think they made good adjustments. His defense gave up 527 yards and 38 points. His offense only amassed 163 yards. Charlie started to play musical QB's for a short period. It could be a long year for the Texas fans.

-Malike Zaire...wow. I was uncertain of how he would do throwing the ball. He was amazing last night.
-Josh Adams looks like he will lighten the load that CJ will have this season. It looked like Dexter was running hard too last night.
-Will Fuller might be the best receiver in the country.
-The o-line started slow but really picked it up and looked like an elite o-line as the game went on.
-Jaylon Smith is the most athletic player to play at Notre Dame in a very, very long time. Idk if there is a better linebacker than him.
-Other than that long pass play, the secondary played great.
-I want to see what the d-line does against Virginia before I say that we now have a pass rush.
-Special teams does not look like it has improved any.
-It was encouraging to see how many running plays that BK called.

52 rushing attempts tonight, that's all I need to know about this offense moving forward. Well done BK, our team is as good as you made them sound and they were so dialed in to play tonight. Played fast and with confidence and I say the coaching staff had a lot to do with this. Jaylon Smith also is just a complete boss

Reps, sir, for zeroing in on what I believe to be the most important point of the conversation. I believe that Kelly's assistant hires, particularly lately, have been phenomenal, and as much a key to the first ND opener under Kelly that has been an efficient effort.

Every time Kelly replaced someone it was an improvement for the program, and that isn't necessarily a slam to any coach that has left. Or moved position groups.

But assistant upgrades, and turning over responsibilities to them has made Kelly look to be a much better coach, and the program much more polished. It has also resulted in a much higher level of play by many of the players as Kelly promised.

First among those assistants that I am thinking of is; Lyght, Denson, Hiestand, Gilmore, Sanford (of course) and a certain strength and conditioning coach from the U of M.

PUMPING THE BREAKS:

1. Zaire did great against a young, inexperienced offense
2. the OL had some snap issues but looked good against a young DL
3. Our receivers caught the ball well and were open, how will they do with tighter coverage? There were a few bobbles before they were caught.
4. RBs looked good but how will they fare against a clamp down defense? How will pass pro suffer
5. How will the defense respond if it get's punched in the mouth?
6. The secondary failed once on a deep ball, how will they do against a deep WR unit?

Still a number of questions to be answered but, I wouldn't trade that first week performance with any other team. We looked down right dominant, let's hope that continues as the season goes along.

What allowed Malik Jefferson to bring the boom more than once was a solid game plan and adjustments that confused the Irish. Look at the film again and see where they had linebackers shoot the gap to get by the big o-line. Other than the one time Jefferson abandon his responsibilities to make the play, they were doing a good job, and all they could. That one play was an instance of proving that even a blind squirrel occasionally finds a nut!

That Jaylon play was incredible. You think about it. Texas QB is 6'5" 250lbs. And Jaylon basically arm tackled him and cause him to go backwards. Kid is awesome.

Really really impressed with Jaylon Smith's open field tackling. I was at the game, and there were a couple of times when it looked like Texas was about to break out containment and he'd come flying in out of nowhere to shut it down.
