If you've got 9 minutes, listen to British philosopher John Gray speak about "protecting our way of life":

John Gray examines what lies behind our desire to protect our "way of life".

"If people are forced to choose between insecurity and a promise of stability through tyranny", he writes, "many will opt for tyranny".

He argues that spending vast amounts of money on "grandiose wars while large sections of our own people languish in neglect and despair can only leave our societies more vulnerable to extremist demagogues".

...well, we've moved on from Blago type approaches to vacant seats. Sad thing is we all KNOW that wasn't a new low in Illinois politics.

It would seem Alabama has a problem. I don't know how it all works there, but couldn't the people recall him???

Bentley is roundly despised these days in Alabama, even by conservatives who elected him. When he first ran for governor, he was widely believed to be a man of high character and a generally good guy. He's now viewed as a creep and lacking in character. Due to a sex scandal, he's known as the Luv Guv. You'd be hard pressed to find 10 people outside his inner circle that wouldn't like to see him gone.

I don't doubt that at all...can he be recalled?

Interesting. Amazing that we spent $14 trillion fighting wars the last couple of decades (according to the audio). What's worse is that the places we've been involved with aren't any better than before (and probably worse off) we got involved. That money sure could have gone a long way in this country.

I guess this study shows debating politics is useless......and there is no hope for Bogs.

Not sure when the study on Conservatives is scheduled.

Here’s Why People Become Angry When Their Political Beliefs Are Challenged « CBS Los Angeles

Proud to say I've somewhat evolved. At the very least, I've learned to take in more sources of information to avoid confirmation bias. My co-workers and friends though...wow...this article nails it. (Not just Libs either, I have friends on both sides, and they're all like this.)

That's how politics should be... two people talking like freaking grownups and at very least actually TRYING to understand each other... but alas...

Anyway,... I laughed at 1:06:00 when Dave talked about his 'gayness' and not being overly 'fabulous'... He seems like a guy I'd love to have a few beers with (as a friend, have to make that clear because some of you are assholes... lol)

Oh we know what kind of "friend" you're looking for. Just a friendly fella to talk about polls and caucuses with over a few too many martinis.

sinner...

No, Governor Bentley can not be recalled as Alabama does not have a recall statute or constitutional provision. Only 19 states have a recall provision, Alabama isn't one of them. From what I read of those states only two recalls of governors have gone through the ballot process, Grey Davis, CA, was recalled while Walker, WI, won his recall battle.

Bentley could resign but he said he won't or he could be impeached by the House and tried by the Senate. The elected Attorney General Luther Strange was leading an investigation into Bentley's activities which include hiring of his alleged mistress as a consultant and hirings and firings at ALEA, Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. Strange suspended the investigation and subsequently was appointed by Bentley to fill Jeff Sessions U.S. Senate seat. A year ago or so Bentley's body guard, who accusers claim could testify about Bentley's alleged affair, was appointed ALEA's top cop.

Bentley supporters claim the timing of appointments is merely coincidental and not part of a plot to obfuscate.

Republicans explore curbing the Endangered Species Act - CNNPolitics.com

The law is a flashpoint: The agriculture industry says it imposes far-reaching regulatory burdens. James Holte of the Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation told the committee, "farmers and ranchers consider it their personal responsibility to be stewards of the land. However, the ESA creates many challenges for them to balance agriculture production with wildlife habitat."

What a crock of shit. I know a lot of farmers, and I'm sorry, they are not experts in biology and should not be making decisions on the ecosystem. Hell, anyone that fishes knows that the number one enemy of riparian rights and riparian protection is farming.

Is this 1940?

I agree...but I've also seen the ESA abused.

There were some shenanigans related to wolf management that were done using the ESA. So Federal biologists aren't above being coerced into doing things they themselves know aren't necessary or the best thing. So I do understand the desire of some to try and restrict the ESA in whatever way they can.

Not the right approach...but I get where the motivation comes from in some cases.

It's pandering to the rural American who empathizes with the farmers. The wolf situation you are talking about was the wolf population in Yellowstone, which aren't even native (the wolves that were transplanted were from Canada). They are repopulated and got out of control. It was bullshit, but who did it really hurt? A few ranchers? Reasonable minds eventually came together and solved the problem and the ranchers are all good. We shouldn't be throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

All sportsman should be concerned with the actions so far environmentally with this administration. If they aren't trying to sell public land to the highest bidder, they are trying to reel back protections on species protection.

...was talking about the motivation of the farmer/rancher to push back, and try to employ political means to get relief. I don't know if that was the origin of the Administration's motivation or not...in the end I don't agree with rolling back ESA...just keeping an eye on its application, and monitoring for species removal, I guess.

BTW...Big Game Forever and the like probably would not agree with your characterization of who suffered, how much, and how the Wolf issue was finally resolved...

and all those big game dudes would be putting their NRA toting hat before their hunting hat. They can be pissed about what the wolves were doing to the elk herds, but the system worked. They won.

If things got rolled back it's wolves they don't want today... next it's the animal they want to hunt, but don't want wiped off the planet.

Again... throwing the baby out with the bath water.

Women's March organizers announce date for general strike
Women's March organizers announce date for general strike - CNNPolitics.com

A day without women? Don't threaten me with a good time. Can she take the kids to the protest?

The organizers of the Women's March on Washington have set the date for their general strike, dubbed "A Day Without A Woman," for March 8, which is International Women's Day.

The group previously announced their plan for a general strike but didn't give the date until Tuesday.
"In the spirit of women and their allies coming together for love and liberation, we offer 'A Day Without A Woman,'" the organizers said in an Instagram post.

"We saw what happened when millions of us stood together in January, and now we know that our army of love greatly outnumbers the army of fear, greed and hatred," the post says. "On March 8th, International Women's Day, let's unite again in our communities for A Day Without A Woman."
The group did not immediately return a request for additional information on the strike, but the social media post said more details would be forthcoming.
The post also voiced support for another strike, the "National Day of Action to Push Back Against Assaults on Democratic Principles," set for Friday.

The organizers of that strike, Strike4Democracy, say on their website that the group will "coordinate over 100 strike actions across the united States, and beyond, to plan for a series of mass strikes to stand up for America's democratic principles."
The Women's March on Washington, which took place the day after President Donald Trump's inauguration, drew the participation of more than a million people in cities across the United States. Since the , the organizers have rolled out a series of "10 actions for the First 100 Days" to channel that grassroots support into further actions to effect social change.

Look at the guy with just one baby that still gets sex every day. Good for you.

Come back to me when you've got 3 kids, your wife is working nights, and kids have after school activities. You have to get real creative just to squeeze in a few nights a week.

There will come a time when the lady goes with the kids away for the weekend and you can sit on the couch in your tighty whities all weekend without shit to do...and it will be magical. That's what I'm getting after.

Maybe I'm doing it wrong then...I'm not proud of the way we have to sneak away sometimes. My six year old has begun to ask what all the noises are coming from the bedroom when all the kids have "movie time" together in the other room. I tell them we're wrestling, I pinned mommy once, but mommy won 6 times.

Yeah... I always win (it's a race, right?)... momma rarely gets to win.

Maybe that explains some things.

What does this mean exactly?

His comments were completely fucked up.

“In the homosexual world, particularly, some of those relationships between younger boys and older men — the sort of ‘coming of age’ relationships — the relationships in which those older men help those young boys to discover who they are and give them security and safety and provide them with love and a reliable sort of rock,” Yiannopoulos said.
