Dumb policy. Never heard of this shitty establishment, will not go there in the future either.

I disagree with what happened and the store's rigid policy, but I understand why they have it in place. You don't want an employee making a mistake and assaulting or injuring some they think is stealing, but isn't. Heck, as much as they may deserve it, you can't have an employee really harming someone who is actually stealing. OTOH, this decision sucked and they overreacted. At worst, they should've given him a slap on the wrist and cautioned him about tackling someone again, then told him nice job looking out for the company. I hope he sues the hell out of them and wins.

My brother-in-law is a manager at a Sam's and they're expressly forbidden to even confront thieves or shoplifters. All they're allowed to do is call the police. He had a guy recently put a big screen in a cart and just roll it out the door and couldn't stop him. That sort of stuff is ridiculous. We've become so afraid of being sued that we have to put up with this sort of bs.

The reason this stuff exists is that loss prevention people have studied the hell out of it and, in most cases, have found it's the most prudent policy not to stop a shop lifter. Why? Danger to employees, danger of being sued outweighs expected loss over the long run for most stores. In stores that are "high risk" they usually hire a security guard who is the only one authorized to stop someone... and often that's a contracted employee through another company.

Is what it is... what's dumb is the idea that if someone grabs a gun and grabs ammunition you're supposed to just smile and say "have a nice day." Fuck that, that's asking to get shot or let someone else get shot. They didn't know he was already packing ammo but this guy absolutely made the right call in retrospect and hiding behind "corporate policy" is not an acceptable excuse for Academy.

A friend who worked with loss prevention told me a few years ago that big stores won't stop someone from stealing, and usually won't even call the police, if the merchandise isn't predicted to be valued over $1000... and the only way for loss prevention and other staff to make a reasonable estimate as to the value of the stolen goods, while the person is still actively in the store, is if they get a very clear look at the thief and his haul, and they KNOW he's about to be on his way out.

So unless the guy takes a cart of the most expensive shit (electronics, raids the jewelry, cart full of OTC medicine, etc.), they aren't dealing with it.

They don't view it as a good ROI on their time and effort, and that kind of makes sense.

A couple companies I worked for did a lot of work for LP departments in retail and T/QSR. I can definitely understand why the policy is there (fear of being sued, cost benefit), but there's exceptions to all policy.

And... Don't be confused, the policy is not there to keep people from getting hurt, it's there to keep from being sued, and is simply a financial +/- equation. This situation is a perfect example of when an exception to policy should be made.

It's also a great example of how we as a society have gotten to a point where we so easily turn a blind eye to criminal activity because it's financially not worth our time or the risk.

SE, MW, and TX.
Deserves a raise, gets fired... The guy is putting his house up for sale after losing his job. Hopefully someone hires him so he doesn't lose his house. The CEO I'm sure will rightfully get F'd by the bad optics for firing someone that kept illegal guns off the street. This is one rare story where Left and Right should be in sync.

You made a funny.

Papa Johns is now removing Papa John's likeness from ads. Name change coming? I bet Manning is happy he dumped his stores.

Personally I'll look forward to the lower prices and pizza specials that this will likely drive.... I like sending my mom a pizza once a month back in Indy and she loves PJ's pan supreme lol.

The University of Louisville is renaming their Papa John's stadium over this. Let that sink in. Louisville. Yes, Louisville, that bastion of integrity, center of the Pitino basketball scandal, and the stadium where Bobby Petrino roams the sideline.

I love Louisville as a town, but yup their sports is about as hypocritical as it can be. I've spent a lot of time there on business (several QSRs HQ'd there), loved the horse track, and also road trip'd there several times as a teen to early 20s. Good times.

John Schnatter lost it a long time ago, I'm surprised they didn't distance themselves sooner.
When you look at all this millionaire/billionaire owners and founders in sports and business that have been ousted for stuff like this, you would think these people would be smart enough to know when to keep their mouths shut and not say stupid stuff lol.

People will always be stupid, no matter how rich or poor they are.
He had to know it's not OK to use the N word, among other things.
He's simply an idiot.
Hope they rename it Papa Jerome's

Obama against political correctness and censorship -- Former President Obama Criticizes Leftist Shutdown Culture - Hit & Run : Reason.com
Democracy demands that we're able also to get inside the reality of people who are different than us so we can understand their point of view. Maybe we can change their minds, maybe they'll change ours. You can't do this if you just out of hand disregard what your opponent has to say from the start. And you can't do it if you insist that those who aren't like you because they are white or they are male, somehow there is no way they can understand what I'm feeling, that somehow they lack standing to speak on certain matters.

That's one topic he's on the right side of. College campuses need to do away with the safe spaces and PC culture. Real life isn't going to give you a safe space, these kids are being prepared for a rude awakening.

He hit the nail on the head. Simply because you are an LGBT doesn't automatically make your thoughts or opinions the only word(s) that count or matter. It's almost like the idiot who has to scream. Simply because you scream doesn't make your opinion right or give it more credibility.

My place of employment booted a Papa Johns franchise from the Student Union food court in response to Papa's ill-advised racism.

I don't mind the decision. It helps foster what is a pretty good environment of inclusiveness on our campus, and the pizza is garbage.

The fact that it took until this incident to boot the franchise is the real problem.

What’s truly amazing is that all of this is basic level shit... yet sadly needs to be sad out loud.

Is it? They got rid of him. Why hold the corporation accountable for an individual's comments? If he would have stayed on board, then I could see getting rid of it.

BTW.....I never trust a guy who wears eye makeup when doing commercials.

They didn't get rid of him. He's no longer on their Board, but he still owns 30% of the company, and the company is currently trying to protect itself from Papa John making a power play to get up to 35%, which would apparently make him the majority owner, at which time he could reinstate himself after things have blown over.

Since his name is on the corporation, and since he's still a major player, I don't mind my institution severing ties.

I might feel a bit different if it meant that employees were losing their jobs, but the employees that were working at the now-closed Papa Johns were school employees, not Papa Johns employees, so they will simply keep their jobs and work at whatever the replacement is.
