UD cuts ties with professor who said Warmbier 'deserved' to die

Professor lost her job for saying the kid from Ohio that died after being sent home from North Korea in a coma deserved his fate.

I *understand* the mindset that (1) if you visit North Korea and (2) violate ANY law at all, knowing the place you're in, you kind of had some shit coming... but for this lady to blame it on a vast generality of young, white, ignorant males that come into the classroom expecting everything to be handed to them is some shit.

She essentially said that he deserved to die for having white-male privilege, and because he allowed it to bite him in the ass. She also equated him thinking he could get away with stealing propaganda to young white males who get away with rape.

The kid MONUMENTALLY f*cked up by going to North Korea in the first place, and then f*cked up even harder by trying to steal their propaganda.

But he didn't deserve to have his brains scrambled, and he didn't deserve to die.

(There's also some really interesting conspiracy stuff that can be argued about the kid's demise, but perhaps it's too soon for that)

That's a mere allegation by the North Koreans and it was disputed by one of his classmates.

Not really relevant to your point but I think it's worth mentioning.

Whoa whoa wait. You can't just drop this line at the end and leave it at that

I was talking to a guy that legitimately believes that the kid didn't leave North Korea in a coma. He thinks they tried brainwashing him or turning him into a plant.

John McEnroe catching heat for saying Serena is the best female in the history of tennis... but that she would be around 700 in the men's rankings.

He's not wrong lol.

Not only is he not wrong, but nothing he said is even remotely controversial to anyone with half a brain.

He also previously said that Serena was "arguably the greatest athlete of the last 100 years"... he's just (accurately) noting that she could not physically compete consistently with highly ranked males that are physically superior.

Serena once did play the #203 ranked guy... admittedly before she hit her prime... and lost handily.

I disagree strongly with that professor being fired for offering an opinion. It's a dumb opinion, but "he brought it on himself and I think it's a cultural issue" is all she really said.

The thing that kills me is that he was on CBS This Morning, and the female hosts were telling him that it was disrespectful, and asking him "why even bring it up?"

1. It's always a conversation in tennis circles.
2. It's not disrespectful to base on opinion on the FACT that men are stronger and faster than women, naturally. Thems just the breaks of nature, ladies.

"Fired" is a misrepresentation, they simply declined to renew her adjunct contract.

I also find it hard to feel sorry for her. As I said in my original post, I understand her thought-process, and agree with a lot of it. But she expressed her opinion about as poorly as she possibly could have. It was in bad taste, and she took it to extremes that were unnecessary.

Especially because he DIDN'T bring it up:
Garcia-Navarro: We’re talking about male players but there is of course wonderful female players. Let’s talk about Serena Williams. You say she is the best female player in the world in the book.

McEnroe: Best female player ever — no question.

Garcia-Navarro: Some wouldn’t qualify it, some would say she’s the best player in the world. Why qualify it?

McEnroe: Oh! Uh, she’s not, you mean, the best player in the world, period?

Garcia-Navarro: Yeah, the best tennis player in the world. You know, why say female player?

McEnroe: Well because if she was in, if she played the men’s circuit she’d be like 700 in the world.

I mean... come onnnnnnnnnnnn.............

I smell "battle of the sexes II," where a woman in her prime dismantles another 70 year old guy on dialysis.

This actually brings up a really interesting broader question - at what point can public universities/colleges fire an employee for their public speech? This is not at all that situation - Dayton is private and the employee wasn't fired, she was just not renewed - but it's nonetheless a good jumping-off point for this question. If, for example, a professor at Ohio St. were to publicly throw their support behind ISIS or the Klan, can that person be legally fired by a public institution?

The girl I dated in high school got 3rd or 4th in state tennis. Had one of them nice $200-300 racquets. Went to camps and stuff. I had a $20 WalMart Wilson. Literally taught myself how to play from watching the major tourneys on tv. Not very good.

Could beat her about half the time.

I get a good laugh at all of the people who think saying men's sports is superior is sexist. What a bunch of fucking clowns.

A few years ago my buddies and I were playing basketball at an open gym and a 4x 1st team all-MAC female played. My friends were D3 good but anywho she scored zero points in about two hours. I think she ever got off two shots the whole time. It was pretty eye-opening for me.

Two sisters of mine threw D1, I could throw as far when I was 13. One was a state champ put wouldn't have made a conference finals in men's.

I don't actually have a clue how good the #700 men's player is. But this was Serena's thoughts on playing a top rated man:

That's a really good question. I'd imagine the terms of your employment contract matter, but beyond that I really don't know how the 1st Amendment protects a public employee if they are totally off the reservation.

A friend of mine was on the "rip squad" (men who practice against the women's team) at Purdue back when they won a natty and had AA caliber girls.

Him and the rest of the RS were high school scrubs/benchwarmers, and they would get yelled at weekly for "going too hard" against the team, and would have to lighten up. He said it was a joke.

I knew a guy who did that while I was at ND. He said the girls (a top 5 team) were about as good as an average JV boys high school team.

Yup. This is a fact. Same experience.

Its the same reason why some really skilled high school players could never play D1, or some all conference D1 players don't make the pros. The physical differences start to really matter. You can be the best set shooter in the world, but if your shot gets sent into the front row every time you release, or you can't get past anyone, its pointless.

But I do wonder how good the best women are compared to a good, non-D1 high school player? Could a lot of the WNBA players could play high school varsity?

Watching the Olympics, its clear that the top female athletes, with some help from pharmacists and chemists, can get to very competitive high school level (the 2016 100m dash champ would have won the Indiana state championship in 1995). However, this is the best woman in the world, and it is almost definitely unnatural. The exception does not prove the rule.

1. I've always been thoroughly convinced a 9th grade boys AAU all-star team would run the women's Olympic team out of the gym.

2. The most important stat in women's basketball is the "uncontested layup percentage". Any player over 70% is decent.

If you made an all-star team of boys from the US and put them up against the women's Team USA coached by Auriemma, what is the youngest age you think they would win?

10th grade.

They've got the height, and a year of high-school competition under their belt to help them adjust to the experience that the all-star women have had.
