Too bad Bars and Mustipher said they didn't want him

they should never have been consulted. was unfair for them to fairly evaluate an outside coach over a guy that's been in the program for years.

Really? I have the opposite opinion... I'm very glad they were consulted.

I also struggle with the idea that Frye is as qualified of a coach as Quinn, or would be as good of a fit. I don't really understand the Quinn negativity relative to the other options.

Exactly. So UCLA hired him? Ok... Good for Chip. Doesn't have anything to do with ND and our coaching decisions really.

if the options available to them were all outside guys they never had contact with before i'd have been fine with that. But can you imagine if they had of gone and said to BK, yeah Quinn sucks we dont want him. Would never happen and thus having them consulted was pointless.

Any one do any back checking onhow poor BC's offense has been over the past 3-4 seasons.

Really couldn't see the love for this guy. Reaching at best

Really? Because that's basically how the exit interviews went after the 2016 season when BK cleaned house... If my top OL didn't think a coach was a fit or didn't like how the interview went, then I'd be hard pressed to buck them in fear of their commitment going forward knowing that the HC doesn't give a shit about their opinions... the only disadvantage would be Quinn would've had insight to the program and players, so he would realistically know what to say to sound like HH... but is that really a negative?

Without advanced stats... Last year BC was 17th in Rush Yards and 13th in Sacks Allowed.

Adjusted by S&P+ they were 101.

OFEI rank of 57 and an Offensive Efficiency rank of 91.

Ranked by Football Outsiders as 33rd best OL, with a Power Success Rate at 31st.

TIFWIW, I agree I wasn't enamored, but I think he could do much better in a situation where he can get better talent.

Frye's OLs over the past four years have ranked, in reverse chronological order: 33rd, 125th(!), 115th, and 20th.

Two good years (considering the talent available to BC), and two atrociously bad years. In 2016, they had literally the worst OL in the entire FBS.

So yeah, I don't see any reason to be upset about "missing" Frye.

If you add Patterson to Olmstead, Kristofic, Carroll and one of Correll, Wormley, etc. Then that's a HUGE W for Coach Quinn.

It was surprising to me that everyone was concerned about recruiting when HH left. Does Quinn have a region he recruits or does he just do Oline? It seemed HH only really took part in recruiting his linemen.

The talking heads of college football haven't declared this yet and there will be plenty here who'll argue that their play on the field has yet to earn the title but when you add up what the Irish put into the League last year, what they could have put into the League this year, what will go into the League next year, what's currently on campus, what's coming to campus and what's committed in '16 & '17... It's official in my book, O-Line U resides in South Bend, IN.

If you don't agree, remember... If you have the winning Powerball #'s on a ticket but haven't turned it in, you aren't rich yet but you have the winner in your possession and it's just a matter of time before you are.

Sometime around 2020 we'll all look back at what was / is one of the greatest runs in position strength we've ever seen.

#5 and #9 tonight.

The #1a most offered OT in '19 committed, the #1b OT in '19's gonna commit and the #5 most offered OT in '19's also committed.

Amazing that we racked up 11 losses in two seasons with an offensive line like that. An indictment of the coaching staff.

The recruiting department needs to put out a graphic on the 2015 O-line. The amount of success each one of those guys has had is absurd

We've had future 1st rounders at starting at left tackle since 2010.

We've had future first rounders playing right tackle from 2012 to 2015.

We had the #6 and #9 overall picks playing next to each other for 2 years.

At certain times in 2015 we had #6 overall, #6 overall, #9 overall, and 2nd round picks on the field at the same time.

So to further a discussion going on in Quinn Carol's thread about inside vs outside guys I wanted to post what I'm looking for in prospects in that regard. I'll never be confused with a professional scout but here it is.

Most people who know anything about Oline is that tackles tend to be tall, rangy guys, but there's much more to it than that. The big thing I look for is in the feet. The most indispensable ability for a tackle, left or right, is being able to counter an outside speed rush. If you can't do that, you're not playing tackle. What I tend to look for is in the feet. Elite left tackles almost glide despite the naturally wonky kick-step to the outside while mirroring the speed rush. Here's a clip of our very own Ronnie Stanley doing this (Time: 4:56):

<iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/YX4hjonnRIc" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen="" width="600" height="400" frameborder="0"></iframe>

Then on the flip side, you have guys that have heavy feet, that an explosive speed rush will blow right by. My clearest example of this at ND is Steve Elmer. Guy had all the hype coming out of high school, and had projected as a tackle with his measurable. When I looked at the tape however, in the limited pass-blocking reps it looked like he was holding in a s*hit. This rep at 39 seconds shows this:

<iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/pmyo4_tOYgY" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen="" width="600" height="400" frameborder="0"></iframe>

Turned out to be a decent starter for us at guard but never became the tackle a lot of people thought.

I've seen very good feet from Patterson from last class and Olmstead from this class, but I have to make note of Kristofic as far as his potential at tackle. While he may be the least ready of the big OL recruits of the last two classes (biggest part of that is bulking up), but he has the traits for what I'm looking for in an NFL left tackle. His tape is stacked with elite pass blocking reps but my favorite is at 3:16 on his Junior highlights. I can't seem to embed from a particular time from the Hudl video but the link to it is here:

Hope you don't mind Golden, but I reduced the size of your videos so they fit the website better. Last ones were massive and made viewing the page more difficult.

Thanks! That's how it showed up on my computer and I wasn't sure if it would appear that way for everyone else. Also do you know how to embed the youtube videos at a particular time? I know how to copy the link at a particular time but not for embedded.

When you go to get the embed code there should be an option to choose a start time.

If not, then you just tweak the embed code a bit by adding "?start=(whatever second you want to start at)" to the end of the url portion.

So for example:

width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/KVit4vSAMsk" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen

becomes

width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/KVit4vSAMsk?start=120" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen

Those highlights from the USC game reminded me what it was like to have a sharp-passing QB. Kizer was on point 60-70% of that night.

And thanks for the info on how you evaluate line play.
