Mark this game down as a loss! Kaya and the Miami speed will kill Notre Dame defense all day!

This probably goes down like the UNC game from 2014. We should be able to absolutely light that defense up but you're right. We currently have no reason to believe we'll be able to competently defend him. I still think we win a shoot out.

Yeah, I don't like how this appears to be shaping up. I have a lot of friends back in south FL who are chomping at the bit to get revenge for the last few times we played. If we can't get our D at least serviceable by then, I think we lose by several scores.

Hopefully the weather is below 70 so Miami has to break out the Gator masks and sideline heaters.

Miami fans throwing trash on the field...Miami is officially back

Real classy, Miami fans. This is disgusting. Hurricanes fans are throwing debris on the field after targeting call. Welcome back, The U. Jon Solomon, CBS

You never know. Miami may get caught looking ahead to Pitt the next week.

Game planning for ND has to be a snap:

Offense- pick any play, it will work
Defense- rush 3 and drop 8, finish with 5 sacks

Hopefully Kelly & Co. has a few better play calls to begin the Miami game unlike the Stanford game. I'll take anything but a zone read for no gain.

Unless it's a hurricane - then you should drop back to pass three times before you punt.

Won't be easy but they're at home at the end of October. Could be a bit too cold for the Canes.

They certainly looked a bit chilled in that Sun Bowl game back in 2010. Here's hoping for chilly weather.

Hopefully we let the grass stay a little longer to slow them down.

Lol...yeah extra long field turf...

You guys laugh, but isn't there a feature of Field Turf where we can remove some of the underfill and make the "grass" taller? I thought that was mentioned when they were installing it. Not that it would be jungle-like and slow anybody down considerably...

Updates

Before fall practice, Miami had eighty-two scholarship players. Two defensive starters were dismissed prior to the start of the season for NCAA rules violations (Muhammad, Grace) and another defensive player suspended while NCAA violations were investigated (Young) transferred out. Recently, Miami's highest rated 2016 recruit (Sam Bruce, WR) was dismissed due to "repeated violation of team rules". Bruce was suspended the first three games of the '16 season due to gun possession in high school, and then broke his leg playing basketball. (Down to seventy-eight scholarship players)

Four other players are out with season-ending injuries (Trayone Gray, RB; Lawrence Cager, WR; Jamie Gordinier, LB; and, most recently, Sunny Odogwu, starting RT). (Down to seventy-four scholarship players)

Four DL players are out with injuries for this Thursday's Virginia Tech game - Chad Thomas (broken hand); Demetrius Jackson (knee); Gerald Willis (knee sprain); Scott Patchan (knee surgery). Thomas is a starter. Jackson, Willis and Patchan were listed as second-string. Replacing Thomas will be a rotation of two freshmen (Jackson, Bethel). They may move a DT (Moten) to DE and have been practicing a TE (Dobard) at DE for depth.

Miami's DL will be thin and low on experience for their backups and at one starting DE position for our game.

Miami has started three freshmen linebackers since the beginning of the season. Fifteen of their nineteen recruits for the Class of '16 have played so far this year.

Against their three Power 5 opponents this season (GaTech (W), FSU (L), NC (L)), Miami's defense has given up 409 yds/gm. (ND's defense has given up 416 yds/gm against six P5 teams.)

Number of scholarship players and number of season ending injuries about the same as Notre Dame. Notre Dame every year is at that level of scholarship players and has as many if not more injuries.

So I don't feel one bit sorry for them.

During the Davies, Willingham, Weis years Notre Dame didn't have speed and athletes. Those days are long gone now. CJ Prosise and Will Fuller are prime examples.

Since they pour it on after the turf is laid, I would assume you could vacuum it up if you wanted to, but it might not be balanced all across the field.

Here's the thing with having longer grass for faster teams. It effects both teams. Fast teams might slow a bit, but slow teams slow down as well.

I remember the 76 Pitt game. When I got into the stadium, I thought someone forgot to mow the grass for a couple of weeks. It was really high and intended to slow down Tony Dorsett. Send play from scrimmage Dorsett goes like 65-70 yards for a TD.

I thought the same thing, but I swear I could have read something somewhere where they touted the ability of Field Turf to add underfill or remove some to make the "grass" taller or shorter at any given time. I would assume it would be relatively even across the playing field if they were touting a feature like that.

Miami Hurricanes’ defense remarkably dependable, despite remarkable attrition

On a per-game basis, Miami ranks in the top 50 in nearly every major defensive category:

tackles for loss (T-1st)
points allowed (T-4th)
yards per carry allowed (T-5th)
yards per play allowed (6th)
sacks (T-14th)
opponent passer rating (24th)
interceptions (T-37th)
red-zone defense (39th)
passes defended (43rd)
third-down defense (47th)

The Hurricanes have allowed the 17th-fewest plays of 10-plus yards and plays of 40-plus yards. They are one of eight Power Five conference teams to not allow a play of longer than 60 yards.

With three tackles for loss Thursday, Miami will match its 13-game total from last year (66). UM ranked 96th in the country. That was its highest raw number and national ranking in that category since 2011.

While some may point to Miami’s softer September schedule, it’s worth noting it held Florida State and North Carolina — offenses which averaged 41.4 and 34.1 points per game — to 20 each. The defense scored 14 points against Georgia Tech, the result of two fumble recoveries for touchdowns.

From end-zone pass break-ups to backside chase-downs, to fumble recoveries for touchdowns and goal-line stands, Miami’s defense has carried the team through the offense’s recent struggles.

Power 5 opponents - Miami Total Defense
Date ------------------------------- Rush Yds-Pass Yds-Plays-Total-Yds/Play
10/01/16 @ Georgia Tech W 35-21 -- 267 94 73 361 4.95
10/08/16 13 Florida St. L 19-20 ------ 165 240 76 405 5.33
10/15/16 22 North Carolina L 13-20 -- 162 299 89 461 5.18

TFL adjusted for Power 5 opponents
Miami (3 P5 opponents) - 23 Total (35th), 88 yds per game (42nd), 7.67 yds per TFL (18th)
Notre Dame (6 P5 opponents) - 30 (16th), 85 yds per game (43rd), 5.0 yds per TFL (56th)

Miami Offense -Time of Possession (v. P5 Opponents -3) - 23.23.33 min/gm (115th nationally)

Their two starting DEs may miss the Va Tech game.
Ex-Miami player, Sam Bruce, who was dismissed, has been arrested for MJ possession.

Miami's defense took another hit. FS Rayshawn Jenkins went down against Virginia Tech trying to make a tackle on a pass play. He planted his outside foot (right) and it looked like it gave way. It looked ugly. He immediately grabbed his leg writhing in pain. He had to be helped off the field.

He's got 10 days till the ND game but he's got be doubtful. It was noted the Jenkins is the Canes leading tackler.

Interesting graphic during MIA v VA Tech game.

In their first four games, all wins, against FAMU, FAU, APP ST, & GA Tech, the Canes offense averaged 47 points a game.

In the next 3 games, all loses, against FSU, UNC, and VA Tech, the Canes offense averaged 16 points a game.

The graphic only dealt with the offense but it the defense also suffered from increasing competition.

In the first four games they allowed 11 points per game.

In the next 3 games they allowed 28 points per game.

Sagarin ranks MIA's opponents:

WINS
1AA FA&M #236
FAU #150
APP St #63
GT#45

LOSSES
FSU #13
UNC #34
VT #21

NEXT GAME
ND #42

This week's Sagarin Predictor would have MIA -4 in South Bend.
