This probably goes down like the UNC game from 2014. We should be able to absolutely light that defense up but you're right. We currently have no reason to believe we'll be able to competently defend him. I still think we win a shoot out.

Before fall practice, Miami had eighty-two scholarship players. Two defensive starters were dismissed prior to the start of the season for NCAA rules violations (Muhammad, Grace) and another defensive player suspended while NCAA violations were investigated (Young) transferred out. Recently, Miami's highest rated 2016 recruit (Sam Bruce, WR) was dismissed due to "repeated violation of team rules". Bruce was suspended the first three games of the '16 season due to gun possession in high school, and then broke his leg playing basketball. (Down to seventy-eight scholarship players)

Four other players are out with season-ending injuries (Trayone Gray, RB; Lawrence Cager, WR; Jamie Gordinier, LB; and, most recently, Sunny Odogwu, starting RT). (Down to seventy-four scholarship players)

Four DL players are out with injuries for this Thursday's Virginia Tech game - Chad Thomas (broken hand); Demetrius Jackson (knee); Gerald Willis (knee sprain); Scott Patchan (knee surgery). Thomas is a starter. Jackson, Willis and Patchan were listed as second-string. Replacing Thomas will be a rotation of two freshmen (Jackson, Bethel). They may move a DT (Moten) to DE and have been practicing a TE (Dobard) at DE for depth.

Miami's DL will be thin and low on experience for their backups and at one starting DE position for our game.

Miami has started three freshmen linebackers since the beginning of the season. Fifteen of their nineteen recruits for the Class of '16 have played so far this year.

Number of scholarship players and number of season ending injuries about the same as Notre Dame. Notre Dame every year is at that level of scholarship players and has as many if not more injuries.

So I don't feel one bit sorry for them.

During the Davies, Willingham, Weis years Notre Dame didn't have speed and athletes. Those days are long gone now. CJ Prosise and Will Fuller are prime examples.

Since they pour it on after the turf is laid, I would assume you could vacuum it up if you wanted to, but it might not be balanced all across the field.

On a per-game basis, Miami ranks in the top 50 in nearly every major defensive category:

The Hurricanes have allowed the 17th-fewest plays of 10-plus yards and plays of 40-plus yards. They are one of eight Power Five conference teams to not allow a play of longer than 60 yards.

With three tackles for loss Thursday, Miami will match its 13-game total from last year (66). UM ranked 96th in the country. That was its highest raw number and national ranking in that category since 2011.

While some may point to Miami’s softer September schedule, it’s worth noting it held Florida State and North Carolina — offenses which averaged 41.4 and 34.1 points per game — to 20 each. The defense scored 14 points against Georgia Tech, the result of two fumble recoveries for touchdowns.

From end-zone pass break-ups to backside chase-downs, to fumble recoveries for touchdowns and goal-line stands, Miami’s defense has carried the team through the offense’s recent struggles.

Miami's defense took another hit. FS Rayshawn Jenkins went down against Virginia Tech trying to make a tackle on a pass play. He planted his outside foot (right) and it looked like it gave way. It looked ugly. He immediately grabbed his leg writhing in pain. He had to be helped off the field.

He's got 10 days till the ND game but he's got be doubtful. It was noted the Jenkins is the Canes leading tackler.
