That seems like a pretty fine distinction to me. For virtually all the Mormons I know, polygamy is an unfortunate part of the sect's history that critics unfairly use to misrepresent the modern church. Many Catholics view the sexual abuse scandals in exactly the same light.

It wasnt a sect, it was the Mormon religion. As I stated before, it was in the past, I acknowledge that it is not a present belief of Mormons

Mormons and Polygamy

Polygamy was part of our past, for about 50 years in the 19th century. But it is not part of our present. Polygamy was officially discontinued in 1890 — 118 years ago.

So yes, it was an established practice by the religion, which is why it is not comparable to the scandals of the Catholic Church.

You are thinking of the FLDS group, which is mentioned in the link, they are the group that has practiced it recently.

I wouldn't even say that it is "part of their past", there are movements of Fundamental Mormons (mormons that practice polygamy) in Colorado, Arizona, Washington and British Columbia. Does no one remember the raid on Colorado City, AZ a few years ago? Joseph Smith clearly stated in the original book of mormon that polygamy was god's will, that is why mormon's that practice it call themselves "fundamentalists".

But maybe we should save this convo for another day, shall we?

By "sect", I was referring to Mormonism generally; not a splinter group.

That still strikes me as splitting hairs. No, clerical pederasty has never been expressly endorsed by Rome, as polygamy once was by the LDS, but it was widespread and covered up at many levels of the Church hierarchy. The Church's scandals also occurred much more recently than the mainstream LDS church's rejection of polygamy.

Again, how would you feel if BYU produced a shirt showing a suggestive graphic of a priest and a little boy next to the ND logo? Regardless of whether you think that comparison passes some pedantic test of "official doctrine", I'd be willing to bet that the "Holy War" shirt's polygamy graphic makes most BYU fans feel the same way. We're better than that.

Are we going to split hairs here? Am I wrong?

I liked this Taysom Hill QB BYU has when he played against Boise State. He looks good on this first drive tonight. He's a poor man's Tim Tebow.

Kid has impressive mobility. RBs run hard too, though one left with an injury tonight.

I have family in Pocatello Idaho where Taysom is from. And I met him class act guy. I hate byu but he's a freak athlete he single handedly would beat high school teams I remember him coming up to Boise to play one of the 5a teams up here and he rushed for 200+ and threw for 400+. He committed to Stanford then went on his mission and while on his mission stanford kept telling him he needed to come back and it pissed his parents off so he planned to transfer and it came down to byu and LSU and he chose to stay close to Pocatello and Idaho and go to byu only 2 hour drive from poky to provo. I hate byu but with taysom they will be dangerous

Based off this game? It's frickin Hawaii they're playing

Their defense is good (top 15 I think), and they can run the ball. That usually makes for a good team.

Edit: 13th based on PPG allowed.

thanks for bringing that up... people seem to have expected a close game or something. This would be like Notre Dame facing IU...

Its hard to evaluate BYU based on Hawaii... look at our running game against Navy...

Before tonight they've played a bad Washington St team, Weber St and Boise. Not exactly a killer schedule there. I'm not too impressed with that D. Plus they lost to Utah and they lost to Utah St and got spanked by Arizona.

You guys are seriously overrating BYU

If you watched BYU's losses to Boise State or Utah, you'd know that they struggle mightily on the offensive side of the ball against solid defenses. It will be another slugfest, but if our offense can get going then the Irish win by 10+.

Their team is sooooo much better with Hill at QB. Going to be a tough one because of their defense, not their offense, though. This upcoming 3 game stretch is the "make or break" part of our season.

This will be the true determining factor in how successful of a season this team has. IMO, BYU shouldn't even be a concern, but because of a struggling offense, it is. This defense can only take us so far. Really need the offense to get some rhythm going...STAT!

Yeah they are a better team with him in but he is really just a slower Denard Robinson. He can move but he isn't all that great of a passer.

I didn't get much from last night's BYU vs Hawaii game because that Hawaii defense is absolute trash. I want to see Hill go against a real defense

Had BYU played Boise last night with Hill and Williams, two freshman, they would have won by 2 TDs not lost by one. Nelson is the more experienced QB but he doesn't play better with a back injury.

BYU is going to be very tough. If you don't think they'll be very difficult to beat, I'd like to point you to our PPG not including the Navy game. We don't have a good offense right now. Our defense is sick, but offense needs to catch up during this bye.

BYU is NOT good. They are not even in Notre Dame's class. Trust me I live in Utah and the BYU VS Notre Dame game will not be close. The last time BYU came to south bend they got smoked and it will be no different this time.

I certainly hope so, because this will be the lone game that I attend this year. Before the season, I saw this as one of the more winnable games, and I still believe that. Right now I'm more worried about Miami in the short-term.

Regardless, is there any sort of meeting spot for the members of IE as far as tailgaiting? Wouldn't mind meeting a few of the friendlies.

My friend and I attend a home game every year, and have seen Duke 07, SDSU 08, missed 09 (he got married), Pitt 10, and were in SB for the USC game (before being called home for a family emergency) in 11.

Started a new tradition of going for a long run around campus the morning before the game, and plan on doing it again this year.

Sorry for the long post! Damn bye week anyway!
