I studied a case for my sports law class kind of similar to this situation. If they fired him for this they would be violating the Americans with Disabilities Act as Sark could easily argue that his alcoholism is a disability.
I could be wrong of course
He could seek disability insurance during his absence, but there are plenty of jobs that you could be fired from for alcoholism. It would be different if he told his employers that he needed help, but if you show up to work intoxicated or fail a drug test there are jobs that have a zero tolerance policy.
