We can talk about losing close games, having a lot of youth playing, but we are still a 2-4 team. IMO Stanford is still better then us. To me their back to back losses were more of a "perfect storm". Shaw will have them ready.

Stanford Cardinal football 2016: The Wheels are Coming Off - Rule Of Tree

Stanford falls again after giving up another 40 points in a game
by CMolesky Oct 9, 2016, 11:39a

Stanford dropped their second game, this time in a 42-16 loss to Washington State Saturday in a performance that leaves the Cardinal reeling. While they have struggled with injuries, the blowouts they are losing show a bigger problem then their bad luck with injuries.

N.B. ND also has struggled with injuries but 4 losses, by 3 points, 8, 3, and 7 ... with NO Blowouts.

Stanford has an inability to finish drives. In the first quarter Stanford’s defense not only held the Cougars to seven points, but also forced a turnover on the Cougars side of the ball. What does the Cardinal do? They miss a field goal and are forced to punt the ball all quarter. They had an opportunity to get control of the game and go up on Washington State early. Instead of punching it in, they played conservative and got burned. It has been a problem for most of the year but when their lines were winning their match ups, it was something that could be overlooked. Now it is a glaring problem.

N.B. ND converting 33% of 3rd downs, 111th out of 128 FBS Teams. How often is ND's OLine winning their matchups?

This offensive line has had some struggles all year long, especially in the run game. However, the last two games teams have almost completely ignored the passing attack and loaded the box. Christian McCaffrey has been smacked around as much behind the line as past it. While it hurt to have McCaffey go out Love and Scarlett are good backs and the running game should have still had a shot. Burns, Chryst and Love combined for 18 attempts and 26 yards.

N.B. Sounds like the ND Rushing Game. BTW, no one here will believe it but ND outrushes SU 150 ypg to 141 and has 11 Rushing TDs to SU's 4.

Ryan Burns was sacked four times, but that is no excuse for the amount of turnovers. He had two fumbles and only got one back. He also threw a pick, as did Keller Chryst. The quarterback spot is a mess for Stanford, Chryst has been thrown in these last couple games because of poor play and both have not been able to play better than the other guy. Despite the fact that Burns threw for 222 yards and had a 76 percent completion rate, the offense still only managed 10 points. They are in the same conference with quarterbacks like Davis Webb, Jake Browning, Josh Rosen, Sam Darnold, Luke Falk and Troy Williams. To not have that position figured out will keep you out of games.

N.B. QB sacked multiple times, turnovers. After NCS, ND's passing game has fallen to #30. QB is a bright spot for ND compared to SU.

Stanford played a really good quarterback and we knew this was going to be a hard game right out the gate. Falk threw for 357 yards and a touchdown with a 73 precent completion rate. But he also threw two picks, one very early in the first quarter, and the Washington offense was held in check for only 14 points in the first half. This Stanford team squandered opportunities then turned the ball over in their own end to give the Cougars a short field. They made this easy for Falk and company down the stretch and put their defense in horrible position to succeed. The defensive line also only tallied two sacks and Falk looked comfortable in the pocket for a majority of the game. Now with McCaffrey having injury problems, Stanford is watching their season slip away.

N.B. ND makes most opponent QBs into stars with the secondary playing #2s, #3s, and #4s on the depth chart. Folston is also banged up and has missed the last two games. He's listed as ? for SU.

SU has 8 players listed as ? for ND game. Seven are Starters with the 8th a #2 on the depth chart. Both starting CBs are dinged, a starting Safety will sit out the first half for a targeting foul. A starting OT is banded up and has been (sounds like McGovern at RG). The starting FB, all 244 pound,s is among the walking wounded. He opens holes for McCafferty who is struggling to get any yardage with a bum leg or hip (per different articles but he's hurting). One of the 3 starting Wideouts has a concussion and the #2 TE is a ?. (Robinson/Hunter/Alize)

And yes, the season is slip sliding away.

Didn't realize how banged up Stanford was. They must be off the gear.

Haha, I was thinking the same thing. My guess is they were close to getting busted, so they had the team take a cycle or two off and now they are dropping like flies.

Checking box score... we let their RB go for 5.5 YPC even though it was impossible to pass the ball? Seriously? That's scary bad.

Was thinking that myself. Felt like he gashed the defense time and again even with a stacked box and the conditions.

Notre Dame ranks 111th in third down conversions. Brian Kelly laments poor first downs for dragging that stat downward.— Irish Illustrated (@PeteSampson_) October 11, 2016

This is true. Penalties on first down, sending Malik out there in the Duke game and gets a 10 yard loss on first down, the center snaps the ball ten yards over the QB's head on first down, predictable running play for no gain on first down, etc.

Overall, Brian Kelly says he’s comfortable with special teams foundationally, but says it still needs to be coached up better.— Irish Illustrated (@PeteSampson_) October 11, 2016

Their gameplan was 100x better than Kelly's, and I'm not even on board with criticizing the pass-first approach.

I was stunned we didn't try to pitch the ball to Sanders, or run him on jet sweeps. North Carolina State did that and brought that motion and they were able to get to the edge enough to keep the Irish defense off balance even with the hurricane helping.

The players have been here seven years?

It's college football. The players and assistant coaches are in a state of constant change.

Thankfully, no. I can't imagine how much they'd digress in seven years. Stick with the freshman on special teams. They're the most effective.

I've seen this stuff posted a lot. Does anyone have a quick synopsis of what the story is?

The NCAA can’t afford to increase its testing frequency enough to sufficiently police all of college sports, Hainline said. So he calls it imperative that schools—or better yet conferences—run their own testing programs. At present, schools aren’t required to do any testing above and beyond what the NCAA administers. But the NCAA says that 90% of Division I schools conduct their own testing. One school that doesn’t test is Stanford, which says it is awaiting a Pac-12-wide policy.

Basically, the NCAA's drug testing is woefully inadequate and Stanford knows it.

Also, though likely outdated, there's this:

The only thing we really had good on special teams is a FG kicker after that our special teams is very average or below is what I was getting at.

KO return hasn't been bad. Punting has been like a yoyo. Definitely don't like the punt formation we use.

Hookers and blow. It's the only thing to get you thru the weekend you're about to experience.

This will be like Utah in 2010. Big win out of the blue.

Kids are busy with exams... week off next week. They'll come through with an unexpected big game.

Irish win (not that it really means anything at this stage).

The Trumpets Under the Dome on Saturday is a pretty cool experience, as well as watching/following the band into the stadium (In my opinion anyway). Keep in mind that the Trumpets Under the Dome has become extremely popular in the last 5 years, people start getting there pretty early these days. If you want a decent spot to stand you have to get there 30 minutes in advance typically. If you want a REALLY good spot you have to get there even sooner. A Youtube is below to give you an idea of what it's like, but it's impossible to describe the energy and acoustics in a video:

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/oBedPq96kr8" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

I'd suggest any fan experience it at least once, but it can be tough for some people to have the patience to get there early enough for a 2 minute trumpet performance. It's become so popular though that the Dome gets packed wall to wall, all the way to the front door with people, every year there's more people.
