We ran the veer out of I formation in high school. Ton of fun to watch when the team is able to move the ball. One of my favorite things about college football is that the veer is not dead.

So did we. Had a small fullback (5'7" 170lbs) who hit the hole lightning quick. He was 8 yards up field before some linemen would get out of their stance. Add to the fact that it was out of the I, we could power run in the same formation.

Can definitely still run variations of power out of wings. And I assure you, it's nasty.

Oh absolutey. You wrap that wingback around inside the tight end or tackle as a lead back? Deadly. We play two teams in our league that do that (I coach high school as well as I assume you still do Beau?) and it is very tough.

now, how do you stop the triple-option?

1. stop the fullback.
2. get penetration.
3. shed your blocks.
4. stay discipline.

I remember reading about the shadow defense that Ara created while at ND, from what I remember it was pretty effective.

4 IMO is the biggest part. You can't try to compensate for a teammate not doing his job. That's when the QB pulls, or gives, or pitches. You know, does what you're supposed to cover.

Kelly says Colin McGovern and Greer Martini will go through practice today, but no contact. Cage a day behind because of academic schedule.

Kelly says they work on ST, but didn't work on onside kick coverage enough. Calls some mistakes "head scratchers" Feels scheme is fine.

That it was.

I was at the Cotton Bowl that year.

Royal never saw it coming and had no answers.

FYI - Jarron Jones has been named the FWAA/Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week.

Kelly was asked why there have been long stretches in recent games where the offense loses its rhythm and stays off the scoreboard. ---- "We're not consistent in running the football. The offense also needs to continue to improve its ability to complete short passes that are essentially runs.

Special Teams: Kelly acknowledged that his team has struggled with special teams errors in recent weeks, and the team's inexperience has contributed towards that. "We're taking our lumps right now, but we have to keep coaching them."

Kelly applauded Navy's ability to rebuild despite losing longtime quarterback standout Kennan Reynolds. Senior Will Worth, the team's backup quarterback entering the season, has thrived in a new role. "You think they lose Kennan Reynolds, and there's going to be a drop off, but the production has been unbelievable."
