We have 3 principal players from CA, Redfield, Schmidt, and Carlisle. Three from a state is good. But then there's also ESB and possibly his brothers.

ND recruits nationally and competes with Stanfordnationally for the same pool of academically qualified athletes that can thrive in ND's academic environment.

The narrative on the broadcast pissed me off. Every other minute one of them was talking about Stanford's 4:40 AM wakeup call.

Eastern and Midwestern teams have been at a disadvantage going out to the West Coast for years, and nobody says anything. Now when a poor PAC team has to come back east, it is a major factor. Pussies.

I really believe it is the media meatheads trying to excuse themselves from picking Stanford as a potential playoff team. Yeah, like that's a possibility!

And does anyone really believe someone that picks Stanford really would rate season win-loss very highly on their lists?

Desmond Howard seriously needs to be fired. The guy is a joke.
He had Stanford going to the playoffs this year.

And this is relevant because? Wait, did Desmond Howard predict a top five Michigan performance again this year? Or did Lou coach at Stanford?

The point is, college football prognostication is filled with sensational predictions used to spark conversation. People go out on a limb all the time in order to look brilliant if their otherwise questionable prediction comes true.

Different situation I think. Lou isn't an analyst when it comes to Notre Dame and a few other teams he coached for, he's a fan. He's allowed to be a bit of a homer, and I don't fault him for it. Desmond had no connection to Stanford and was picking them based on analysis. Plus, the 11th commandment is "Thou Shalt Not Besmirch the Name of Lou." The 12th commandment is, of course, "Fuckith Michigan."

This. Playing in California every year in November (Whether it's USC one year or Stanford the next) is important for recruiting purposes as well as getting kids out of cold South Bend for at least one day. The kids look forward to the trip, don't deny them. Not everyone has grown up in the Midwest tundra, kids from the South and West Coast need a game to look forward to.

And how many games ago did the Irish lose to NW. Don't write Stanford totally out of the PAC picture just yet. Not saying they are going to win the conference or go to the playoff but point is....... It's early

While it's obviously too soon to be making jabs against Stanford for loosing to them, the difference IMO is that we lost an ugly game where a lot of mistakes happened (which is bad for other reasons) and we essentially beat ourselves. Stanford just got beat up by Northwestern and were the better team on the field.

does anyone else feel like Shaw is on the hot seat? I feel like his teams were really good immediately after harbaugh left, and have gradually gotten worse. I know its hard to follow the harbaugh and luck show and not saying hes had terrible teams, but things aren't what they used to be over in Palo alto.

Stanford has had 7, yes SEVEN, 10+ win seasons in program history, and Shaw was the coach for 3 of them.

He's never won less than 8. He's 100% not on the hot seat.

Harbaugh had one 10+ win season, two losing seasons, and an 8 win season.

Ergo:

Harbaugh was 29-21 at Stanford, Shaw is 42-13.

It'll take them a long time before they are really good again. Shaw is still a good coach. It's just difficult to overcome the lack of support for the team. They've been terrible for most of their history. If Shaw can maintain winning seasons, he'll definitely be kept.

Luck of course provided an anomaly set of seasons for them, but if a guy wins 8+ there, that's remarkable IMO:

They'll keep Shaw forever and Steelhead is spot on.

However, I'd argue that he's actually a very vanilla, bad coach who simply has been riding the Harbaugh wave. His record (and team efficiency/performance) has gotten progressively worse over the last 3 years, and this year might be the 4th year of decline in a row. Despite recruiting much higher rated guys than Harbaugh got, they almost all seem to be busts (especially at offensive skill positions). I'm really interested to see what Costello does.

That's the thing: if Stanford higher ups are happy with fielding a competitive team, like they have now, Shaw will be there forever. If they get greedy and think the Luck years are the new standard, they might as well go pound sand, and enjoy going through a new coach every few years.

Shaw's saving grace is his QB recruiting. Ryan Burns, Keller Chryst, and KJ Costello are all top 100 recruits. Can't see them going below 6-6 at any time in the next 5 years with that stable of QBs. Atleast one of them will pan out.
