Uhh I'm 17 so.....

I don't know how my parents would feel about getting a beer with a dude I met on the Internet haha.

I didn't feel like I was that much older than you...

Have you not aged in a year or two?

You were posting as what, a 14 year old?

?? Don't think so… I don't really walk by it tho other than for gamedays and tours.

More of a joke about how BYU is going to take ND and Diaco's hope and pray defense to the woodshed Saturday. Keep us posted though :)

Philly, what day are you getting in to SB? We're getting in Thursday night let me know if you want to grab a beer, it's my first trip up and could use some good bar recommendations.

We went last year for senior day and We got there on Thursday morning. I drove all night and was SO tired that I couldn't keep my eyes open until we went past the Notre Dame sign. Then, adrenaline kicked in and I was amped all day. We toured campus Thursday, Friday, and early Saturday morning, but we still didn't get to do everything. Everyone was so nice in South Bend, on campus, and in Plymouth where we stayed. Everyone gave us great advice on where to go and what to see. We had planned on going back this year, but I had to have another surgery and there went any extra money we had. Next year when we go back, we are going to try and get there on Wednesday. That way, we can tour on Wednesday and Thursday. Friday's everything is gearing up for the pep rally and then the festivities afterward.
Oh yeah, the golf carts that carry you around from place to place on campus was a God send for a old crippled up fan!

HAHA! Side note: My wife wasn't really a Notre Dame fan since she got her Ph.D. from Ole Miss, but by THursday afternoon, I was having to tell her to slow down on buying ND stuff! She got the fever bad! HAHA! She hasn't let up. I am still going to the door monthly signing for packages from either the bookstore or Fan Fanatics.

I hope you have as great a time as we did and I am sure you will. That campus is magical. Honestly, I had heard the saying that no words could describe it if you'd never been and no words were necessary if you had. That's true, but man I love re-living the experience when I do talk about it.

BYU is tore up look up all the injuries to starters. They have backups playing DB,WR.

Should be able to throw the ball on them, and don't think 3rd string 4th string wr can beat us.

It's crazy how ill-informed their resident ND poster is... listing Springmann as a linebacker? Come on, man.

IMO, this entire game comes down to health in the front 7. Can we get after the QB, stop the option, and keep contain consistently? If yes, then you put the game on Hill's arm and he's not that good. The UVA game was played in adverse conditions, but frankly in their 3 losses it was the same story... Hill throwing 40+ times, only one good receiver who can consistently get open, sputtering offense and failure. If you can stop their runs, the offense is not good enough to get north of 21 points. If you can't stop the run, then thanks for playing.

On O, as highly ranked as their defense is it's more of a product of playing bad offenses. They do not defend the pass great, and if we can get any kind of running game going to open up single coverage we will have guys wide open. Can Tommy hit them if it's windy snow-raining? That's another question entirely. Protecting the ball will be a must.

Does anyone know if Badger is playing much or at all for them this year? I recall hearing that the NCAA ruled him eligible but haven't heard if he has seen the field.

Not so sure about that. BYU's Defensive S&P+ rankings:

Overall - 9
Standard Downs - 12
Passing Downs - 7
Rushing - 4
Passing - 25

And Defensive FEI:

Overall - 6
First Down Rate - 21
Available Yards - 7
Explosive Drives - 34
Methodical Drives - 5

Even after adjusting for SoS (which according to FEI is nearly identical to 'Bama's), this is an elite defense.

That said, USC's defense is better according to both metrics, and Rees was carving them up before he got injured. So I have no idea what to expect. But I'm not comfortable calling their defense overrated.

Somehow, I don't think we'll have trouble scoring points. If we lose, it'll be because our defense is too banged up to stop them.

Is Taysom Hill hurt? The answer is NO. BYU will be more than fine against us. Diaco will do little to stop him.

Eh, this is one of those cases where I think advanced stats are way off. They get way too much credit for what they've done against non-BCS teams with non-BCS talent on offense.

They're 2-3 in their 5 games against legitimate teams. Those include a 19-16 loss in a monsoon to 2-8 Virginia (Virginia's only other win on the year was to VMI), a stomping of 7-3 Texas which can be considered an anomaly in the same fashion as Virginia, a 20-13 loss to 4-6 Utah, a 38-20 win over a Georgia Tech team that can't throw the ball, and a 27-17 loss to a good Wisconsin team.

So on their entire season... they've only played one legitimate team with any sort of legitimate offensive talent. They didn't get shredded, but they gave up 400+ yards and 27 points by the beginning of the 4th quarter. I've only watched 3 BYU games this year (UVA, Wisconsin, and Texas... all of them partially) but it is quite obvious that they don't have the talent on the back end (or even in the trenches, but their LBs are great) of elite defensive teams. Luckily, they don't face teams with good offensive lines or QBs or playmaking WRs ever on their schedule that can expose that. The closest thing they've come to facing a legitimate passing offense was against Houston and they got lit up. Sadly, I think ND lacks the QB to expose it either.

Put another way... would you rather go against FSU's defense (ranked behind them as 7th in FEI) or BYU's? And it's easy to see the flaws in any system that thinks Virginia Tech... that recently gave up 34 to Boston College in a loss... has the best defense in the country. BYU's D is great on paper, but when I watched them I saw a lack of talent and athleticism at a number of positions. Not too dissimilar to the issues of, say, Farley, Fox, Calabrese, etc.

Thank you Lax at least you see what I see.
They have like 2 players on the offensive line that are 2nd string, our front 3 day, nix, tuiit should be able to get pressure. If we blitz jalen, or just have him spy hill that seems to be the perfect defense.
Also our running backs are deep, cam is a beast, GA3 got that speed, and folston can beat everyone on BYU defense.

I just look at every position, and feel we are better at Dline, Dbacks,Oline,RB,WR,TE you name it. That's not just bs.

On the contrary, if what you said about their secondary and Dline is true, I think Tommy might be the perfect QB to exploit BYU's defense. Tommy's big weakness this year seems to be pressure, he's almost always done well when given time to throw. If BYU's DL isn't good enough to get pressure consistently, Tommy will carve them up, especially if their secondary isn't very good.

I hit up Google and it turns out BYU averages 2 sacks a game, and 75% of those sacks came against Houston, Idaho State, Bad Early-Season Texas, and option-scheme Georgia Tech. If the Oline keeps Tommy clean I think we're in this game. BYU's offense isn't THAT good.

Maybe so, but when allowed to dictate the flow of the game they'll be very tough. I'm not optimistic Diaco will do a single thing to disrupt what BYU does effectively on offense.

I'll be very interested to see how an entire week away from practice will affect the team. Will they be sloppy and unfocused, or completely recharged and hungry?

Off of the last bye, he had a masterful gameplan to stop USC and they executed it near perfectly. I'm sure they will have SOMETHING prepared for BYU.

given notre dame's recruiting they should be 8 times deeper than byu and you don't hear byu whining about not being able to win because of injuries. who cares if you have more injuries, you should have 8 more skilled back ups.

you sound afraid and too eager to provide an excuse why a lowly team like byu might beat your mighty irish or whatever you are.

i hope byu beats the crap out of notre dame. notre dame's elitist attitude is nauseating to me.

for your info our injuries are

anae (starter offensive lineman)
reynolds (starting offensive lineman)
mathews (starging offensive lineman)
apo (quasi starting receiver)
mathews (receiver, backup)
falslev (punt returner, starting receir)
alisa (starting running back)

defense
kanuch (starting d tackle)
jorgenson (back up linebacker)
hadly (starting linebacker)
trammel (starting cornerback)
johnson (starting cornerback)
hanneman (2nd string cornerback)
peoples (dtackle)

no excuses hear. Beat the domers who are afraid they are going to lose to lowly byu!"

I agree with this point. Some of you claim that we have these hidden gems, recruit so well, and our rankings are underrated....well....Let's see.

Just like with PITT. Injuries, refs, field turf. I'm tired of hearing it.

Let's just go out and stomp the **** outta them. Like we should.

Well, this is a Notre Dame message board... and when ND loses, we are going to discuss the reasons for those losses and talk about "what if." And sometimes those reasons include injuries, guys not panning out, guys leaving and crappy referees.

I agree that ND should just go out and stomp them though.

I just disagree when people gripe about "excuses." They aren't excuses. They are discussion points on a discussion board.

This just came to me... when was the last time ND just rocked a legit opponent (Like Holtz used to do reg. or like how ND gets rocked in bowl games)... it's been a long *** time has it not??? I honestly can't even remember the last time something like that happened.

Miami? What level are you putting "legit" at? We embarrassed a Miami team that many thought was going to beat us.
