He filled out really well over the last two years. Started all 12 games last year as a RS freshman. Wasn't too productive but I bet he has a nice career in front of him.

interesting take that Coach D thought/felt coach alford over coached the rb's which made them too robotic the past 2 years...huge dividends in recruiting w/ denson being there

feels Gilmore will make the biggest impact
-has created pass rushers at every stop-great production from his lines
-great fit w/ BVG as elston wasn't w/ his system

some other stuff
-feels he will have us 1 gaping more, shooting gaps

Considering the impact he's seemed to have on Kareem already, he might just kill it at ND when he has something better to sell.

Thats a great point and one I hadn't previously considered.

Keith Gilmore

Defensive Line Coach

Keith Gilmore enters his second season as North Carolina's defensive line coach.

A 29-year college coaching veteran, Gilmore has coached previously with fellow UNC defensive assistants Vic Koenning and Dan Disch. Gilmore and Koenning worked together during Koenning's two seasons as the Illini defen¬sive coordinator in 2010-11. Gilmore and Disch were on the Illinois defensive staff in 2009 and 2010.

Last season, Gilmore coached Kareem Martin to his most productive sea¬son as a Tar Heel. Martin posted 21.5 tackles for loss (fifth in the country), 11.5 sacks (ninth in the country) and was third on the team with 82 tackles. Martin was named the national defensive player of the week after a dominating performance at Pittsburgh in which he registered 3.5 sacks and forced two fumbles (recovered one). Martin continued a long tradition of UNC defensive ends in professional football when he was selected in the third round of the 2014 NFL Draft by the Arizona Cardinals.

Prior to his arrival in Chapel Hill, Gilmore coached four seasons at Illinois. He coached 2013 NFL Draft picks Akeem Spence (DT) and Mike Buchanan (DE), and in 2011, he tutored consensus first-team All-America Whitney Mer¬cilus. Mercilus was named the Ted Hendricks Award winner, given to the nation's top defen¬sive end, and was a consensus All-American. He led the nation in sacks (16.0), sacks per game (1.23) and forced fumbles (9) while breaking the Big Ten record for forced fumbles. The 16 sacks tied Simeon Rice's UI single-season record and Mercilus' 22.5 tackles for loss in 2011 ranked second nationally and third all-time at Illinois. Mercilus was taken in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft by the Houston Texans.

Gilmore guided a budding star in 2010 in defensive tackle Corey Liuget, who was a first-round pick of the San Diego Chargers in the 2011 NFL Draft after being named a fourth-team All-American by Phil Steele. Liuget and Akeem Spence combined for 108 tackles, the most by a pair of Illini defensive tackles since 1993, and Spence was named a Freshman All-American by Phil Steele and Rivals.com. Illinois' rushing defense also held five opponents under 100 yards in 2010.

In his first season with the Illinois defensive line, Gilmore tutored a start¬ing four that posted 33 tackles for loss and 14.5 quarterback sacks, including honorable mention All-Big Ten selection Clay Nurse.

Gilmore spent six years with Cincinnati head coach Brian Kelly, two with the Bearcats, one at Central Michigan in 2006 and three at Grand Valley State from 1991-93. As assistant head coach and defensive line coach, Gilm¬ore helped lead Cincinnati to a Big East championship and a trip to the 2009 Orange Bowl. He coached a line that ranked ninth in the nation in sacks, averaging nearly three per game. The run defense allowed only 115 yards per game, which ranked 19th in the NCAA and the scoring defense was 25th.

In his two years at UC, Gilmore coached a defensive line that boasted All-American Terrill Byrd, the school's single-season sacks leader in Anthony Hoke, and NFL draft choices Angelo Craig and Connor Barwin. His group proved to be one of the best in the BIG EAST, as the Bearcats defense ranked second in the league in scoring defense (18.8) and rushing defense (114.2).

Prior to Cincinnati, Gilmore mentored a pair of defensive linemen to all-league honors in his only season at Central Michigan. Gilmore went to CMU in 2006, after four seasons as the assistant head coach and defensive coordinator at Howard University. He also was the defensive line coach for the Bison, who led the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference in total de¬fense in 2004 and ranked seventh in the nation (297.5 ypg) and again in 2005, while ranking second in the NCAA (255.7 ypg).

Gilmore has held internships with three NFL teams throughout his coaching career. He spent the 1996 summer with the Green Bay Packers' coaching staff, the 2002 summer with the Detroit Lions' scouting department and the 2005 summer with the Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers scouting department.

Prior to his time at Howard, Gilmore spent the 1998-2001 seasons at Norfolk State. He was the special teams coordinator and also coached the defensive line and running backs.

A two-time all-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honoree at Wayne State (1979-80), Gilmore began his coaching career at his alma mater in 1985. From there, he served stints at Michigan State (1988), Northern Michigan (1989-90), Grand Valley State (1991- 93), Wayne State (1994) and Eastern Michigan (1995-97).

Gilmore earned his bachelor's degree in rec¬reation management from Wayne State in 1981 and a master's degree in sport administration from Michigan State in 1990. He and his wife, Bridget, have five children, Keith, Kierre, Grant, Keyontay and Grace.

Little more in-depth on the Ron Powlus hire and the job he will have here.

Ron Powlus Returning To Notre Dame
Ron Powlus, one of the most heavily recruited high school players of all-time, signed to play quarterback at Notre Dame in the class of 1993. After his career was finished in South Bend, Powlus returned to Notre Dame as the quarterbacks coach from 2005-09.

Now, Irish247 has learned that Powlus is headed back to South Bend as the Director of Player Development, which was formerly held by Duke Preston who left recently for a job with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

In the role, according to Notre Dame's website, Powlus will be responsible for helping develop the Irish football players in three of the five core areas head coach Brian Kelly uses to develop complete student-athletes: intellectual development, social development and spiritual development (the coaching staff is charged with skill development and the strength and conditioning staff is responsible for physical development).

Powlus will act as a liaison between the football players and coaching staff plus serve as primary contact between both the student welfare and development office and academic services for student-athletes department.

Through the athletics department's student welfare and development office, Powlus will help coordinate community service projects via the "Irish Around the Bend" initiative. He will also help coordinate and monitor the study hall sessions with the associate director and senior academic counselor of the academic services for student-athletes department.

Powlus will also play a key role in on-campus recruiting during unofficial and official visits.

This sounds great, almost coming together as a dream team type scenario. Denson, Lyght, and Powlus along with strong coaches like Gilmore and Sanford. Interesting to see what it looks like during the season and in recruiting efforts.

Color me impressed!

One question, a few of us were chatting last night and we wondered about changes to the NCAA rules, etc. Are their rules in place that allow more than nine coaches, for example, can ND hire two coaches for the booth in games above the limit of nine, if they only work in the press box, and don't have direct player contact?

If so this would be a real dream; to have Elliot and Quinn in the press box, to free position coaches to be on the sidelines with the players. (The comment was made that maybe some of ND's tempo or general organization issues have been with having key coaching components away from the field and the players.) Other thoughts?

This is either going to go down as a historically great staff...or, with too many cooks in the kitchen...an epic failure. I'm hopeful for the former. This is all very exciting. I, personally, love the idea of Powlus and Elliott (and hopefully Quinn) in these administrative roles. I think that will pay huge dividends.

Didn't realize Lyght's Bishop Gorman time.

Notre Dame’s 2015 football coaching staff will officially be introduced on Friday. Head coach Brian Kelly will introduce four new members of the staff at a noon press conference.

As previously reported, Notre Dame is expected to hire defensive backs coach Todd Lyght, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Mike Sanford, running backs coach Autry Denson and defensive line coach Keith Gilmore.

The four newest members of the staff are also expected to meet with reporters following Kelly’s press conference.

Lyght, an Irish cornerback from 1987-1990, briefly joined Vanderbilt’s staff in January. Lyght previously worked for head coach Chip Kelly for two seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles and two seasons at Oregon. Lyght, 46, first coached at Las Vegas Bishop Gorman High School in 2009-10. He played 12 seasons in the NFL after being drafted in the first round in 1991.

Sanford, the son of the former Notre Dame quarterbacks coach of the same name from 1997-98, spent the 2014 season as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Boise State, his alma mater. He coached running backs, quarterbacks and wide receivers in the three previous seasons at Stanford. He also served as Stanford’s recruiting coordinator. Sanford, 33, played locally at Penn High School for two seasons.

Denson, Notre Dame’s all-time leading rusher, was hired to be South Florida’s running backs coach in January. He worked under former Irish offensive coordinator Chuck Martin in 2014 at Miami of Ohio. Denson, 38, spent the three prior seasons at FCS-level Bethune-Cookman after one year as head coach at Pope John Paul II High School in Boca Raton, Fla. Denson rushed for 4,318 yards at Notre Dame from 1995-1998. He played five seasons in the NFL following his Irish career.

Gilmore, 56, spent the previous two seasons of his 30-year coaching resume at North Carolina. He spent the four prior seasons at Illinois and has served on Kelly’s staff at Cincinnati, Central Michigan and Grand Valley State. Gilmore played collegiately at Wayne State, where he began his coaching career in 1985.

So, guessing Preston was the non-coach staffer who some of the players were tweeting about leaving a week or two back?
