Heard an interesting story last night at a wedding reception.

My hs buddy's sister married a college soccer coach who recently played ND.

They didn't have have anything over the PA system during warm up didn't do introductions and didn't even announce when goals were scored.

Then all of a sudden you hear a large fog horn and the announcer comes over they pa system and does the rest of the game.

Turns out they can't be on the pa system even for games while the football team is practicing.

Once practice is over they blow a horn and the announcer has to wait two more minutes until he can begin using the pa system.

I guess Kelly personally holds this horn and the "two minutes" is so Kelly can "wrap up final thoughts."

Kelly runs ****.

It takes time to build a football program. It's easy to forget, but Charlie Weis left this program in absolute shambles. Kelly came in and has totally changed the culture. Right now, we're 7-2 and people are complaining. We would've been elated with 7-2 under Weis. Brian Kelly took us to the National Championship Game last year, not long after we had gone 15-21 over Weis's last three years. We're laying a foundation now that will only continue to get stronger.

Shambles is a stretch, but we were 6-6 with a terrible defense and lost Clausen, Tate, and Rudolph to the pros. Crist was a mess and our best option at QB was true freshman Tommy Rees. At a minimum, the defense was in shambles.

Weis did change the culture enough that some 4-5 star guys were choosing us. But it was a mess.

Agreed.

It's like some of these people don't remember the truly horrible years we had to endure.

Kelly doesn't win with flash and flare like Oregon does, but he wins ****ing football games, plain and simple.

I don't give a **** how we win games. Under Weis we'd be losing these close games. And as long as we're winning these games, our recruiting will continue to be proficient and we will continue our upward trajectory to being a BCS quality team

He's like the Tommy Rees of the coaching world!

I'm not picking sides, but why are we comparing Kelly's success based on the measuring stick of Charlie Weis?

Why not compare to our peers, which would be coaches that have been at a school for a few years and recruited similarly to ND in that time?

If I take over a ****** company, I don't go to the stake holders and say 'well were better off than 4 years ago!'.

I am judged on the current competition. You don't survive based on company's past, but how they're doing in the current industry.

2010: 8-5
2011: 8-5
2012: 12-1
2013: 7-2

Right now, I'd say we're in he upper tier of our competition.

I agree with your comparison, but it should be compared to both. You don't exclusively compare a stock to its similar parts, you take into account its past. How good our team is today is in comparison to other teams, but how good our program is includes what we've risen from.

ND is 31-4, third place for BCS regular season wins in that timeframe, to Oregon and Alabama. I will let you decide if we had a tougher schedule than those teams!

First first year coach to win a bowl game.

Implemented training table and a myriad of other firsts or improvements. This guy is a process guy, and a great administrator.

Putting more players in the NFL than any coach since?????

He has improved his assistant staff and maintained loyalty. Only has one more improvement to make.

But the thing I like best is how hard we are hitting. I don't know if it shows on TV, but the SC and Navy game were two heavyweight bouts. Tell me when you saw that under Davies, Willingham, or Weis?

Kelly does have flaws. A certain blindness due to arrogance, (Tulsa, Diaco, etc.), but what great coach or leader doesn't?

There are a handful of coaches out there who will consistently get you 10 or so wins per year, but will rarely, if ever, win it all (Miles & Richt come to mind). Do you settle for that and usually being a very good team (but never being the best), or do you demand more at the risk of getting much less?

In other words, would you rather go 10-2 every year or go through some lean years for a good shot at winning it all every once in a while?

I totally agree with everything you said. Granted, the highlighted have a lot to do with the Weis era of recruiting but, I believe the recruiting has stepped up a bit and it both will continue. Especially after watching what the Irish Freshmen and Sophomores have been producing on the field.

So sick of people calling for Diaco to be fired, or that he sucks, etc etc. Not talking about any one poster in particular who has been talking ish about Diaco for quite some time, so no, not trying to start another war. There's more people doing it.

But Kelly's problem is not Diaco. Diaco had a bad game yesterday, NO DOUBT, but the shortsightedness of some fans is truly astonishing. This was a HIGH SCHOOL defense when he took over. And last year, we had the #1 scoring defense in the nation. Think about that. So we want to fire a guy (or call him a mistake) because he has a bad game plan against an unconventional offense we see once a year, a year after he turned one of the worst defenses in the nation to one if its best???

Think about that. The lack of perspective and lack of memory of some fans is unreal. Diaco pissed me off yesterday and he's pissed me off before, but get a grip and think big picture - he's done an outstanding job during his time here and deserves much more praise than criticism. We can certainly fire him and hire another coach and digress (calling for Elston, someone who has only been a co-coordinator for a MAC school for ONE YEAR, to replace Diaco as laughable)...and then everyone will be wishing for Diaco to return lol. Thank God Kelly doesn't listen to message boarders...

Over the past five years name ten programs that are without question better than ND, I tried this morning, it's hard to do... And the Sun Bowl was a good win for this program IMO...

But yeah, they need to take the next steps...

-IMO those would include BCS, major bowl or playoff game win,...

-Passing the 'eye test' consistently ( this is actually a big one)...

-beating more name teams, FSU next year would be a great start... OU last year was nice indeed...

-And of course, the obvious would be to win some hardware... This would be a title or multiple big bowls against big teams.

-Getting five star defenders in every cycle would be another huge step that must be taken.

Yankees, Cowboys, and Notre Dame are the three most difficult coaching jobs in sports. Where else could you go from a run at the national championship and be criticized for your coaching ability the very next year when you realistically have a shot at a 9 or 10 win season.

Winning championships with the academic requirements that ND upholds for their athletes is incredibly difficult. Kelly has done an unbelievable job given the pressure cooker that he is living in and I believe that in time, the program will win another NC under his tenure.

Sorry - not directed at you. Just frustrated at people complaining after wins and while we are in the middle of another good season.
