JEFF GEORGE is a CARDINAL?????!???!!!!!!!!!
I'm here. I had to walk home from class.
I'm ready for my public berating...I deserve it. I'm not Epitome.
On NBC going hard on Notre Dame right now!
no access right now...please explain...
Where does he fall regarding the ordination of women?
Staunchly opposed.
Just mentioned them a few times with Ann Thompson (ND Grad) giving analyse from Rome, then switched to a live feed from Notre Dame to get some comments some women who I didn't catch a name on, a professor maybe?
Brian Williams made a quick joke about the spotlight they were giving ND for the few moments too.
So I guess the whole "new name= reformer" thing is going to take a lap for this round?

ha, yeah, I've read that he's credited with having achieved some degree of modernization in Argentina, but I think he is basically conservative. At least he's what we would call conservative in this country. He's not pro-gay marriage or anything. He may have been born in South America but it will be basically business as usual.
Someone stated that Bergoglio was considered a "liberal" choice by the conclave, but thus far, I haven't found any indication of such (even by Catholic standards).
HEY, FRANKIE!!!
interesting write-up on Francis:
Argentina's Pope Bergoglio a moderate focused on the poor | Reuters
I'm finding the same thing as Whiskey, he's labeled liberal or moderate, as in the headline of the above article, but then when I dig deeper he appears to be basically conservative.
Am I correct in saying that the vote of the Cardinals is believed by Catholics to be the direct will of God, when they finally get a Pope?

Clerical celibacy?
Come on give me something.
Pope's can't change this stuff. I don't know where people got the idea that popes can come in and change the sacraments of the Church.
So who how are catholics/christians now allowed to eat shellfish? What is the procedure?
Socially Moderate and Theologically Conservative is what I see. But find me a member of the clergy that isn't Moderate to Liberal on social issues.
it's cause all those darn Jesuits are liberal!!

That's not Catholics.
I don't follow. He strikes me as conservative on social issues such as gay marriage and abortion. Or do you consider those theological issues? If so, what are social issues? He seems to be a real champion of the poor, if that's what you mean, but as you say that's pretty uncontroversial.
That's not Catholics.
They usually are (for Catholic priests, at least).
The right Pope could change a lot of things-- clerical celibacy (at least at the Diocesan level), transparency, accountability, etc.
Hope we are not going to see a "those are Pope Benedict XVI's guys"
Pretty sure he's just trolling.
