New & Changing Player Positions?

I read in an article that starting this week individuals would be evaluated at new positions by the coaching staff request and also by the players if interested. The article also noted the BVG firing would be a good thing for Jay Hayes as for some reason BVG was the kind of guy who liked players in there that he felt comfortable with i.e. Trumbetti and Schmidt. Back in the day when Ara was coaching he made a point of putting what he thought were the best all around athletes on the defensive side of the ball. does this mean Claypool to safety or Tori to CB? We have a bounty of talented WRs and I will say that Kelly has been good during his career of moving guys outside of their recruited position and making them successful for themselves and the team; Bennett Jackson, K. Russell, Onuwalu, Riddick etc. I also think Daelin Hayes should be considered for LB development and Onuwalu go on a crash diet and move to safety.

Wonder how many players are stoked with the BVG canning and if Hudson's has been sitting back forming his opinions when this day was about to come. also read that Kelly was evaluating BVG since the Texas debacle and contemplating the timing to pull the trigger. didn't think this D was going to be bad especially after a stout Blue Gold game effort.

I just dont want to see Trumbetti on the field anymore. It makes me sad that John Ryan was a more effective DE than Andrew.

Maybe Trumbetti might play better knowing he doesn't have to drop 25 yards down field in pass coverage? Hopefully Hudson will at least use the players properly and play them to their strengths.

He looks more comfortable covering air than he does getting pounded in the trenches.

The only changes that could save this team would be kicking all of the malcontents from '12/'13 that are still around off the team. Horrible leadership and effort is why we're at this point. Way too many soft players that don't want to be here and we should oblige them.

malcontents for sure but I think we still have some good ones from 12/13 but ALL malcontents in general should go. Will be interesting to see who gets the start this week. The #1 Jersey BS gimmick needs to die especially since we no longer hold the most winningest CFB team anymore. I think the captains should be re-selected and given out each week.

He is better suited to playing a LB if he wants to keep getting smaller. He doesn't seem as good as he was when he was a freshman with lower expectations. The D Line suffers from no one good enough to warrant a double team like Sheldon Day did.

Ouch, Ryan....that was a low moment when a walk on might get a chance to start on the D-line. I would compare him to Tommy Rees but Tommy Rees actually produced sometimes.

Dexter Williams should get more carries, especially after Kelly's comments. If you want people to play with more dick and balls, than play the player who played with dick and balls. Williams made this an easy decision.

Hoge and any other linemen who is willing to play ornery should be added to the mix on the offensive line.

Move Rochelle to 3 tech and let Jay Hayes and Daelin Hayes take reps at end. Cage should start at 1 tech. Rotate players in and out, except Rochelle. Move him between 3 tech and 5 tech and play him 50 downs per game.

Get Bilal some reps at LBer.

Play the teeny boppers in the secondary. At least they make mistakes playing full speed.

Play a base defense 95% of the time. Let them play football and win individual battles. Stop blitz review during practice and instead practice tackling. I honestly think they'd be 3-1 right now if they played a base defense every snap of the year and could actually tackle like men.

I'm all for getting rid of #1 jersey, an definitely for re-doing captains on a week by week basis.

Seriously

Rochelle was never a DE. Move him inside and bench tillery and jones. Play Cage and Rochelle inside . Hayes , Hayes , Jamir , etc get a shot at DE

Start 4 freshman at DB's

On offense get rid of TE and go with hurry up 4-5 wide and pass 50 times. Only way we open up a run game imho.

Get McGovern out and give Kraemer a shot or biven or hoge.

Target Claypool more

Move Adams out to WR more and give Dexter carries.

This part has always amazed me under BK. It's 3rd and 15 and he'd rather have Smythe than Claypool or Boykin out there. I like 3 WR 1 TE 1 RB as a base. No clue why it's the permanent formation out there for 90% of downs.

So where to we move MVG. We obviously don't want him in a position to cost us games like being the holder.

Our DEs should be Hayes, Hayes and Kareem
DT should be a rotation of Cage, Rochell, Tillery and Jones. Rochell should go back to DE on short yardage and goal line situations.

How about move Brent and Holmes to safety or corner? I don't see them ever getting meaningful snaps on offense.

Thought the same thing sadly. People will point to him at the drop of a hat and if he has the same feelings as his sister remove altogether.

another excellent idea. Now that Hudson is leaving his "Analyst" position...code for interim coach in waiting, you can fill his spot. Been thinking this for a while now. I bet at least half of that happens.

What I really don't get is that for 7 years BK has always preferred seniority and experience to talent as far as playing kids. His whole MO has been to redshirt as many players as possible unless they absolutely have to be used. He had AAAAALLLLLLLLL YEAR to evaluate the noninjured non freshmen. All offseason he always said the young guys don't know what they are doing more often than not in Interviews. Now all of a sudden a quarter season in he is looking for the hungry guys? We're there not hungry guys before? What if the hungry guys still don't know what they are doing? Smh. This sucks ...

I dont understand how Trumbetti is worse as a junior than he was as a freshman???

It takes a special kind of coach to make a player WORSE than he was coming in from high school.

I just don't think you can throw a WR in at CB or move this player or that player to a new position. That would be coaching suicide. But what Kelly and crew can do is see which players actually want to be there and play them. If you don't want to put out then you can get out. No excuse for players not playing with heart and pride. If you are a junior or senior and that's you, then slide on over to the bench.

I haven't posted in quite some time, but I do read this board and appreciate the insights offered. Obviously, this season has been a disappointment and I don't think we have the defensive talent to run any form of man defense. With Vaughn playing well, what about switching to a zone scheme? You could mask our inability to play man and also not have Vaughn and others trying to chase guys across the field.

I'm grasping at straws here, but I don't think anyone on the roster or incoming next year (no disrespect to Adeebo) will ever turn into Mackensie Alexander. If nothing else, it should theoretically be a bend but don't break type defense (missed tackles, etc. notwithstanding).

Admittedly, this is based off of Seattle's success with "lesser" players but didn't want anyone to think I expect those kinds of results.

To be honest, when people say this stuff I'm not even clear who they're talking about. We only have three or four upperclassmen on the defense who even play. Redfield yes appears to have been "a malcontent," but he's gone. Onwualu and Rochelle may not be All-Americans but they don't seem like malcontents. Cole Luke? The guy's our only competent corner at this point and he seems to be playing hard even if the results don't always translate. Offense is similiar. Not a lot of major players.
I agree we have a leadership gap, but most of the recruits from those two classes are gone at this point. And the ones who are left, I don't really see how they're "the problem."
