Was not a huge fan of Fortuna. Just hope this doesn’t mean the shamrock podcast is done for good. They haven’t done one in months

With Fortuna gone, where is the Athletic going to turn to fill his role as “guy who used to cover Notre Dame and hasn’t kept up with what’s going on in the program but co-hosts a weekly podcast about it?”

Anyone who lives in the Midwest and has a youtubetv account is eligible to replace him

Yep. If the podcast continues, I'll give it another shot. Fortuna was a terrible host and partner for Pete.

Hah I didn't realize there was so much hate for Fortuna. He never bothered me, but that's mostly because he was white noise for me on the podcast. I certainly didn't read any of his content.

He didn't bother me really either, but his knowledge of ND football would be considered casual at best IMO. The amount of inaccuracies he'd spout per podcast started to pile up.

The unfortunate part in all of this is I bet Pete just goes rotating second chair which means Ari Wasserman :(

Going off of Pete's current output of one fluff piece with no real information a week, I'd be surprised if the podcast even continued.

Is there even a reason for Pete to have a separate podcast outside of the II one?

From a Pete and fans standpoint, I don't think there is a reason. I know The Athletic likes to get their name out there as much as possible though and podcasts has been one of those mediums they use to do that.

When you see multiple podcasts after recruiting failures: "Can ND Actually win a National Championship?" you get the visual of Kevin Bacon in Animal House. LOL.

The answer is obvious...can they? Sure but I wouldn't put fair money on it. And its this year with this QB..... Recruiting certainly is not game changing in 2024.

Listening to Hit & Hustle right now. Greg and Jamie are talking about how ND (boosters, alumni, etc.) need to start collectives focused on HS recruits. Said it's hypocritical to say you don't like acquiring HS players but are fine with dropping a bag for Sam Hartman.

I find that a little hypocritical of Jamie. On Power Hour he mentioned that he wouldn't spend money on recruits if he had the means to do this.

A 5th (or in this case 6th) year senior who has proven himself in college is just such a better investment. I think you're a 50/50 chance of a recruit working out even for the top 150 guys

Regarding the HS recruits, here is the success rate (drafted or have played in at least 1 NFL game) for the top 150 players (per 50 spots) in the 247 composite for the 2013-2017 classes:

1-50: 70.8%
51-100: 44.0%
101-150: 34.0%

Not saying you need to go overboard for everyone in the top 150, but the top 100, specifically the top 50, you need to focus on. For example, let's say ND had a great collective and was able to acquire Justin Scott, Elijah Rushing, Ryan Wingo, and Guerby Lambert, who are all ranked in the top 50. Based on the data from 2013-2017, about 3 out of those 4 would hit, and you'd have a real chance at going 4/4.

Isn’t there a collective in place?? I thought BQ and co started one

FUND is a collective, yes, but it’s not a collective in the same way Tennessee has a collective. FUND, by its mission, exists for players currently on the roster and isn’t doing acquisition fees.

Shows you the HS Rankings are actually meaningful. 5 Stars are better than 4 Stars.

I really enjoyed The Shamrock's post-game podcasts. There isn't really an II equivalent to those.
Same. Pete is obviously far more plugged-in to the program as it exists today but I never minded Fortuna.
I thought some of the other team beat reporters they’d bring on sometimes were morons by comparison. The USC guy I remember last year just had nothing to say and seemed like he’d been covering the team for all of three months.

Given the roster turnover that USC had last year with the arrival of Lincoln Riley, he kinda only covered that team for like three months.

Good to see you and TheRealLynch are back. You were missed. So when 2024 ends up like 2023 - a Top 12 type class.... will rankings not matter or will you fall back on the BCR % argument? Are we still thinking the mantra "Gap Closing" or more the angle "balance class and a great fit"?

Seems to me 2023 / 2024 Freeman's first two classes are not going to be as good as Kelly's last two classes. But silly me, I forgot class rankings are silly, subjective bullshit, right?

Time will tell, but Freeman's QB classes on paper are much better once Kelly left.
