Given how much of the coaching staff is new, their sourcing inside the Gug probably isn't as good as it used to be. Source relationships also probably withered during COVID times. Maybe Freeman runs a tighter ship, too (Remember the secret QB visits during bye week? No one saw Minchey coming either).

Also so much has changed in the dynamics of how/why players make recruiting/transfer/draft decisions that the old conventional wisdom may not apply as well anymore. In the past, of course Hart goes, and Pyne stays. But a little extra NIL money might keep Hart around, while Pyne knows if he doesn't jump right now he might not have a job next year.

As for Pyne news, I'd bet his family tipped Thamel.

I thought Cam Hart was more speculation by the II guys and were very confident in their reasoning (I saw the logic in it). I don't really remember them claiming "oh yeah we hear Cam Hart is definitely gone" like they did with Brandon Joseph.

And w/r/t Pyne, everyone was shocked. Not just the beat.

Not just that... they had no clue about Minchey or that Buchner is practicing. 3 days before the Minchey news went official, they were saying ND had no plan at QB in 2023... and then after it went official, they were pretending like they knew all along.

Its been a rough couple of months for the guys on the beat.

I can't imagine Harry is very chummy with beat reporters and Tommy seems to have a few guys he talks to but they seem to be more national than local. The ND beat writers most likely all lost their main contacts over the last 12-18 months.

I've no idea. I don't listen to these podcasts. But might it have anything to do with the fact that our starting QB just bailed before the bowl game? I could see how that might be a little problematic in the locker room right now, even if moving on from Pyne is clearly the right decision in the long term

1. Sampson: Pyne family told Thamel because they didn't like how he was covered during the season [by the local guys]. "I think they were overly sensitive to some of the things [said] about him" (!)

2. Prister: "When Thamel breaks a story, it usually comes from higher up the echelon." Half-stated/implied AD office level of FB program told/confirmed Thamel about Pyne leaving.

TBF, I do think this was an open ended question a lot of people had. Seemed really strange that Thamel broke the news before a local beat with the resources ND has.

How many guys cover ND football on how many sites, and ESPN broke it first? It was strange. But makes a little more sense now.

Pyne's dad is in sports marketing. It's no surprise the family would aim to maximize exposure for Drew.
