Mayer became the focal point because of the limitations of our QB. It would be very ND for Pyne to be our starter again next year, but I would hope we upgrade that situation. It’s a weird situation to be in.
Mayer had 8 targets against OSU with Lenzy’s 4 2nd on the team and Mayer had 13 against Marshall with Styles next with 11.

I think he was always the focal point, which is fine. But it’ll catch up to the team eventually. This isn’t a Mayer problem. It’s a QB problem. I don’t have faith in Buch either. This year was supposed to be the transition year for him but another lost season can ND really afford to have him as a starter?

A unique situation for sure.

The transfer problem is you need to bring in players that are really good. Smith on the defensive line cost us a player on the defensive line. Lacey was a much better player and they took snaps away from him. Smith might have been good for depth but not production.

Joesph was good but I don’t think he was great. But he was better than Brown or Griffin. So it did help the team but I don’t think we can say he was very good or a game changer.

I still think if we had a different QB the record is better and our offense was better. Once Colzie came back from injury and got healthy he was a be time player that got over looked by the QB. Pyne is obviously smart to be at ND but he literally didn’t improve running the offense. It was the same issues. Yes sacks will happen and turnovers but a lot of his were self caused and not good defense.

Wasn't Smith basically a replacement for the DT who tore his ACL in spring practice? Aidan K. And if Lacey was a "much better player," he would have played more.

Agree Joseph was good not great. Not really the All-American candidate he was touted as. OK. He was still good enough to start.

Both he and Smith were solid players who plugged holes in our roster. So did the kicker and the punter we brought in. We could have used a big-bodied WR (we saw what we had lacked once Colzie got squared away in the closing weeks), and of course a QB.

That's basically what Sampson was talking about. Not 20 transfers, not superstars necessarily, but six or eight guys who are good enough to slot in to the two-deep and give you quality reps. We have typically brought in two to four, and almost exclusively grad transfers.

Smith took nothing from Lacey. If anything it was Mills and by extension NaNa.

I agree they were really slobbering USC. Sampson did say something that resonated though. ND needs to either figure out how to take more transfers or admit they aren’t “all in” on winning championships, because saying you are dedicated to winning is just fraudulent if you continue to handicap in this way.

It’s not about getting the top free agents every year. It is about filling the roster holes that inevitably come up. ND needed like 4 more players from the portal this year in addition to the painfully obvious quarterback situation. But it ain’t easy finding graduate transfers that can make an impact. Underclassmen transfers are an absolute bare minimum necessity to be competitive.
Lol like the university gonna release a tweet?!?

He said there are three left after Tarek. Its also been said there recently that the staffs number for the 2023 class is currently 27 but could expand to 28 which means that there probably is only 2 currently silently committed from the 2023 class. My guess is Kaleb Smith and one of Hillman or Barnes. Hoping the 24 commit is Aneyas Williams
It’s either him or that TE I’m guessing

I’m still irritated from the game last night so my judgment is probably clouded, but is the Shamrock an ND or USC podcast? Man, the first half of the postgame pod is just a USC pump fest. We literally don’t give a shit about who led USC out of the tunnel.

Also, the most irritating takes:
- this is the worst USC team ND will face in the future from Fortuna. Can’t you say the exact same thing about ND with the massive recruiting uptick and upgrades at QB? Also, is USC is going to have the heisman winner at QB every season?
- there’s no reason ND can’t be physical and also be explosive from Sampson. Yeah no crap dude. The coaching staff had to pivot to a ground and pound offense because of the lack of QB and WR recruiting. And ND was explosive against USC so idk what he was trying to get at that would have changed this game?
I unsubscribed from this podcast about a year ago. I really like Sampson on the II podcast but he was just OK on the Shamrock podcast. Fortuna is terrible. Not only are his ND takes not really that great, but he stomps all over Pete when he is trying to make a point. If I were Sampson I would be seriously pissed after every pod. Fortuna thinks he is the show and his ND centric knowledge is below average at best.

That Fortuna take made zero sense when I heard it in real time and I’m glad it wasn’t just me thinking that. Is every USC team going to have a better QB than Caleb Williams? Because Notre Dame was better than USC everywhere else last night. ND is recruiting much better at all positions other than just QB and WR, and ND is closing that gap. That’s not to say USC isn’t going to be good this decade. I’m sure they’ll improve at other positions. The chances Malachi Nelson is as good or better than Caleb Williams are slim, and that was the entire difference.
Yeah I don't get this take at all. Even just on paper, ND is ranked 10 spots ahead of USC's 2023 class (3 vs. 13) and 8 spots ahead of them so far in 2024 (2 vs. 10).

USC isn't going to be able to hammer the transfer portal every year like they did. They'll have to be more selective as you can't take advantage of roster turnover each year like you can after a coaching change. Scholarship numbers will limit their ability to do so.

That game was more competitive than it appeared, the Pyne fumble and the failed Mitchapalooza were the only difference in the game. It should've been UCLA/USC all over again if we take care of the football.

He really is pretty miserable lol
It was weird hearing Mike rant about how we were physically dominated and run off the field, only to turn on BGI and hear Goolsby talk about how they played tough and looked better than he thought when he was watching the game live.

Mike Frank talks to the audience like they’re naive children. Maybe his message board folks are but he loves to come on after a loss and bang on the mediocre players with his incessant sighing. Today he immediately claimed “I tried to tell everyone that Caleb Williams was the real deal”. I mean maybe his message board users are Pollyannish but I didn’t see anyone on this board deny Caleb’s talents And then with the “it’s a different world w/ the portal & NIL”. Yeah, we already know this Boomer. He talks like all ND fans are stuck in the Holtz era when I’m pretty confident (at least on this board & the others I participate on) that’s not the case. I wanted to tune in today to hear Jamie but couldn’t finish w/ Frank’s monologuing about how miserable everything is. If I want that I can jump on the game day thread in real time during an ND loss…LOL

To be fair, a sizable percentage of Notre Dame fans are stuck in the Holtz era. Not us, of course :) but the sorts who glance at recruiting rankings on signing day, can name perhaps four guys on the team prior to opening weekend, rarely watch games not involving Notre Dame and are angry we can't just queue up the fight song and beat the snot out of ranked teams every week like the good old days.

We all know these people. I'd imagine there's enough of them for Frank to pay the rent.

Literally can’t listen anymore. “I tried to tell you guys…” Are you kidding me? You tried to tell us about the leader for the Heisman trophy? I turned it off after that because I knew what it was going to be. Really wish Jamie U was on a different platform

Bryan Driskell said to watch out for a second show today which almost always means there will be a commitment. Guesses? Kaleb Smith?

I just asked why the top of 247's MB was cleared out. Seems something's up.

Gonna be a fun sick day!

Tim Prister hinted in his Thursday Thoughts that there will be significant roster turnover, but it won’t be the player’s choice. Essentially saying that staff will be cutting some fat off the team.

Is there any truth to this? Lenzy not being asked back could be some evidence.

Sampson discussed this in his most recent article on The Athletic (that is a link to it, I know they are hard to see on the site now) too. ND will be about 10 over the limit as of now. He said at one point:

"Still, Notre Dame’s position speaks to Freeman’s desire to “enhance” the roster and probably says something about how the staff sees some of the players stuck outside the two-deep. Instead of waiting for a return on investment that might never come, Notre Dame seems more inclined to recruit over the top of players who may not ever click as college contributors."

He also says ND (the school, not the team) may struggle with coming to grips with this reality, but Freeman has to be aggressive in roster management.

I don't like it.
