ND Stadium Atmosphere

It's not about win or loss, necessarily. The atmosphere is going to be incredible. A bunch of drunk Irish fans, screaming their lungs out at night time vs. the hated, USC... It's going to be unbelievable. Win or lose, the recruits are going to realize how special ND nation is. Just imagine all of the pre-game celebrations that will be going on before the game even starts. Once they kick off, there won't be a person in that 80,000+ stadium that won't want to ink up with the blue and gold.

Go Irish!

Have you ever been to a game at ND stadium? Not attacking, just asking. About 1/8 of the stadium (the student section) is even paying attention. Those kids cheer their asses off while blue hair momma and pappy are asleep in their seats by 12 minutes left in the first quarter. Those still awake are getting yelled at for standing up and cheering.

Something has to change within in the walls of ND stadium... Unfortunately, I think to a certain degree, tradition and lack of change (no field turf, no jumbotron, no loud music....yada yada yada) feed into the blue hair mentality. This is 2011... Time to liven things up. Throw out the people who were confirmed dead 15 years ago....stick them in a box (not a coffin...) and let them watch from there. ND Stadium should be a place that is feared to play in....not a place where you get thrown out of for standing up and cheering your team.

I'm sorry that this is your opinion of nd games but as someone who has went to games their entire life I can tell you that is not the attitude in our section and we are no where near the students

Per your request, HCTI, here is a new thread. However, do NOT get into personal attacks with each other. No need. I deleted both of your posts.

On topic, i can see both sides. Watching on TV, there are times when the games seem like a library. Maddening. But i go to one game a year, always a rivalry, and the crowd for THOSE games are always amped. i've never been told to sit down (if I was told to sit down I'd probably stand on my chair just to **** them off even further), but I know many fans that have, and that's just b.s. Our section is always lively, which is great.

ND stadium is nothing like stadiums in the South, expect for big games, when I've seen the crowd get really loud. That's when the games are the most fun for true fans. Truth is...old alumni (from old schools like ND and Michigan) = quieter crowds. But for games against Western Michigan and Tulsa and teams like that, it sure doesn sound pathetically quiet on TV (and those super long NBC timeouts REALLY hurt the crowd noise).

Oh, and at least we're not the worst. 've been to plenty of SC and UCLA games, and those games are far quieter than ND games and never as consistently packed.

You want good fun??? Go see a game at UTenn. Those people are off the hook. Extremely friendly and everyone is in the game for 60 minutes. By the way... UCLA and USuck play in friggin' cathedrals. Even during a sellout, USC is empty at one end in the Coliseum. Empty seats don't cheer....and neither do old people apparently.

Notre Dame stadium, The Rose Bowl, The Coliseum, even the Big House all suffer from the same affliction. They are all above ground, bowled stadiums which channel sound out not in. Though they seat a great many people, acoustics were the least of concerns when they were all built. I really do not have much of a point since its getting late and I have had one too many IPAs. Though I contend from watching ND games on TV for the past 25 years that the two loudest games I have seen were the FSU game in 93 and this past seasons Utah game. When Blanton blocked that punt and scored. I thought my surround sound was going to blow up. The crowd noise was ferocious and made me ever so proud to be a fan of Notre Dame.

Yes, twice. Two years ago vs. Navy and last year vs. Michigan. I mean, I thought it was obvious by my avatar (you won't find that pic in google images). Maybe it was just me, but I had a blast (even though both games were losses). I was hammered drunk, getting everyone in my section jazzed up.

Not sure what your deal is, but I love the atmosphere (and I'm young, 24).

You might be interested in this article, HCTI. It discusses the phenomenon you seem to be describing in your OP.

Don't have a "deal"... Just asked a simple question. I thought I made that perfectly clear in my first post. Wasn't trying to come off like a jerk, just asking a question. It's one thing to have an opinion of ND Stadium in person vs. just watching it on TV.

Glad you were hammered drunk...and even more happy that you were trying to get the blue hairs off of their collective A*S*S*E*S* and actually rooting for the team. It's about time someone did....without getting their faces chewed off for standing up.

I think that after this year's USC game, the staff and administration will seriously consider having one night game every year.

If it makes a difference in recruiting, then it makes a difference in the program. And smart AD will find that advantagous.

Kyle Rudolph's 95 yard td was pretty loud. I loved it. I just wish I had left immediately after that td.

Awesome... We're on par with Troy, USF, Northern Illinois, UCF, Navy and Fresno State.

I can't take that article seriously when Nevada is ranked higher than the likes of ND and Michigan.

But let's add night games and get a jumbo-tron. All in favor, say I.

This would be a good start... I don't see anyone sitting or anyone bi**ching about someone standing up and supporting the team. Guess what folks...sometimes, technology is a good thing. It riles the crowd up and it's on from there. He-ll.... Half the time, when ND leaves the tunnel at the beginning of the game, you have to beg people to stand up and clap to THE Fight Song.‪Virginia Tech Enter Sandman‬‏ - YouTube

No to the jumbotron, that would be like putting one in the Vatican. Yes, it may liven things up, but at what cost? And it could only go in one spot, the end zone that backs up to the parking lot, obviously not the other end-zone where it would block the view of the library. And what happens to the people sitting right below it?

Night games I like.

Side note: in my NCAA12 dynasty, ND Stadium is the most feared place to play. :)

I know the Big House is WAY below ground. And I'm pretty sure that ND Stadium is too. If you walk around the stadium and peak through the north entrance, the tunnel goes down hill to the playing surface. I'm pretty sure it's quite a bit below ground.

Did you mean the opposite?

I was at last years Utah game, and it was electric. It was a weird atmosphere. On one hand before the game started the stadium felt like we were about to watch a 11-0 Notre Dame team try to overcome their last obstacle in completing a perfect regular season...there was a certain buzz in the air but there was also a ton of anxiety, nerviousness and tension. It was like everybody was on the edge of their seats just waiting for a reason to make that place explode. The beginning of the game, the crowd didnt have much to cheer about, believe we missed converting on a 3rd and short and had a few negative plays in the first few possessions, but then came the blocked punt and the flood gates opened.

Having been there I can definitely confirm that part of the reason for the excitment was this was not your typical ND crowd. I believe coming off the Tulsa loss and into the home stretch of what many thought would be another disappointing season, many season ticket holders, etc had sold their tickets, and the crowd that day consisted of a much younger demographic, many of which it seemed had not been to Notre Dame stadium too often, if ever, and they were pumped to see a Top 25 team come into town.

The Utah fans were very friendly and gracious both before and after the loss. And the crazy thing about that game is although it was one of the loudest in recent memory, pro-ND, Utah was also WELL represented in the stadium and in fact I can not remember a game when an opposing team had so many fans in our stadium. Maybe that was another contributing factor in the crazy environment, the ND faithful in the stadium that day felt they needed to take back their stadium.
I'm sure the nasty physical play of the team, the horrible weather, and everybody just being fed up and pissed off added to the atmosphere as well.

Regardless it was effin awesome.

no. the playing surfaces of most "bowls" are most likely under ground level (drainage/foundation/space?).

all of the stadiums you mention rise up from the ground at least a few stories. the top of the big house is at street level, for the most part. making it not an erected structure, but a dug out one. in fact, im not sure ive ever seen another one like it.

You got that right. My family and I got to go down there for the 04 game there. All of their fans were very nice and friendly. The only time they seemed to be upset with us was after Goolsby had his pick 6 and ran it into the endzone that we were sitting in. My father and I jumped up high fiving and started looking for others to celebrate with, but it was a sea of orange around us. We sat down very quickly. All in all they were very nice and it was an enjoyable time.

As for games at South Bend. I have only been to a couple of games, but they have been loud IMO. As stated above not as loud as some but the crowd was always into the games and were loud at the appropriate.

^ This! Get the stadium rockin from the get go. I'm sorry been there numerous times and it's not a place I'd be intimidated playing in. Kids these days (on opposing teams) are to young to remember/believe in the "ghosts" -and that is evident by road teams success in our place over recent years(it ain't just powerhouses either ex. Syracuse, Uconn, Tulsa list goes on and on...). The only time it seems to get loud is when something great happens. Wake up old men it cant be like this, rock it from the get go...
