I don't think it's a matter of what he wants but moreover what he believes. He's just doing his job.

Herbies seal of approval does make me feel good though.

I don't think it's just him though. College football needs Notre Dame to be great again. Notre Dame just makes football that much better. Whether people love them or hate them they will always talk about them. Look at Mark May. I can't stand the guy but he always brings them up. And there are even more I could list. Notre Dame is on the way back up and it's a good thing for everyone whether they want to admit that or not.

Exactly my thoughts when I read this...No one wants to say oh yeah we have a big Boise State vs TCU bowl game...What if Notre Dame played well enough to get to a bowl and played Miami in a BCS game. Something along those lines..That game would make more and be watched more across the nation then the National title game...

Five years ago we lost games by 17, 25, and 31 points. 6 years ago we lost games by 26, 31, 37, and 38 points. Weis may not have been able to get us "over the hump" but he brought us pretty damn close. I think we're on our way up and are pretty close to being back among the elite.

I think the NCAA, the networks and anyone invested in college football is dying for Notre Dame to be elite again. Notre Dame=Money. BK could do it, but he has to work to break down some barriers that Charlie wasn't able to get down. Charlie did good in my opinion in knocking down some of those barriers that were created after Holtz.

my attitude is when we lose to an awful, awful michigan team, navy, and uconn, as well as a very down (by their standards) usc...and barely beat a few other middle of the road teams...we lose the right to say we are close to being elite.

they have to show me.

one of those barriers was ND admissions no longer letting in players who had no business being admitted (as they were under the Holtz regime).

that is one barrier that should always remain at ND, IMHO...and to his credit, i dont think that is something CW spent too much time worrying about. i think he respected that players who were getting admitted fit the standards that ND espouses, unlike what was occuring 20 years ago.

We were about 1 minute away from being undefeated.

REALLY!? then we were almost just as close to being 3-9. if you want to count the close losses as "almost" victories, then you have to count the close wins as "almost" losses.

a team can say they are elite, or close to it, when they leave no doubt as to who the better team is in most of their games.

Kirk Herbstreit was at my school
(D-III so no competition with ND) once for Gameday. My friend yelled, Kirk! I want to have your babies. Kirk looked at him and said in a real sarcastic voice, cool dude.

I've been a big Herbie fan ever since.

Herbie is a Midwest guy and like most of College Football wants the Midwest to be great again. Michigan is horrible, they beat us so that says enough about how good we are, Ohio State is going to the Rose Bowl but let's face it they aren't exactly a powerhouse. It is good for College Football when the midwest teams are good but it is great when Notre Dame is at the top!

Our best support at ESPN will and always be Lou, Mike Golic and The Herd's "leader" on ESPN radio....I'm sorry I don't like Kirk......I'm sorry if i offended you by calling Kirk a "lost soul"...BUT...Once someone starts taking jabs at ND...I take it serious...Kirk calling ND "irrelevant" was a jab "BCS related or not".....

I actually feel like Herbstreit is the fairest ESPN personality to Notre Dame there is. When they win, he gives them credit. When they lose, he rips them. When he makes predictions about their future, its usually based on what they've done recently, not what he wants them to do. I know he took shots at Notre Dame. Well, they've had their 2nd 6-6 season in a row. They deserve it. Maybe "irrelevant" is too strong a term, but overall the man's usually fair. Unlike most of the other guys like May, McShay, etc who just hate on them whenever they have a chance, and give them no credit when they do something well.

And also not like the other end of the spectrum, Holtz. Now, I love Lou and all (what ND fan couldn't?), but the guy is a complete homer when it comes to Notre Dame. This is a man who predicted Notre Dame would be in the NC game this year. The title game! A team that finished 6-6! Even though I & most of us certainly expected better than 6-6 this year, I think I can safely say that no even remotely objective fan could've predicted this team to the title game this year. And its not like that's the only instance of Holtz being a bit of a homer.

So yeah, to sum up, I like Herbie. I know he came down hard on them this year, but imho they deserved about 99% of what he said. And if Kelly turns it around, he'll give them credit for that as well.

He seems to be a big believer of Kelly. I thought he said some nice things about us during the awards yesterday.

I remember about 1/2 way through 2007 and Herbie said: You guys laughing at ND should do so now and get it out of your system... they'll be back on top sooner rather than later.

Are you kidding me? Entertainment pure and simple. He'll be the first to rip them if it doesnt work out. And watch for the 'they have sold out on their values' if Notre Dame succeeds. Ask Ala,Fla,southern cal,Tex,OSU, and the rest of the semi pro teams if they care what happens to players when they leave. Their approach is mine against yours and not educating young men. Notre Dame must make a decision at this juncture and decide if they want to get back in the game or just be everyone's game.

I think Herbie is fair most of the time. No problems with him at all.

I have that copy of SI (your avatar) framed in my office hanging next to the Tony Rice cheer cheer for ole ND title game winners one and the Notre Dame's Mr. T with Tim Brown on the cover...

Just remember some of the silly stuff that flows from this guy-Miles, mich/osu rematch, notre dame irrelevant, Swarbrick played these guys like a fiddle these past few weeks. They dont know half as much as you think they know. It doesnt take a brain surgeon to know Swarbrick was after Kelly. He's just glad he's out of Cinn but now they have to deal with the possibility of Notre Dame recruiting in Ohio.
