Akron:
Our sources have informed us and we are the FIRST TO REPORT that new Head Coach Rob Ianello has hired Ron Powlus (Notre Dame Quarter Backs coach) and will try to get John Latina (former Notre Dame Offensive Line Coach/Ole Miss Offensive Coordinator) to join the staff at Akron.

I asked this in another thread, but when do you guys think his Cincy assistants would come to ND?

Obviously Kelly would want them at ND to get recruiting on track, but taking half of the staff away from Cincy before the bowl game is hard to imagine.

Of course, ND's recruiting is way more important than a UC-UF bowl game.

i know a lot of us think that it was tenuta that hurt us but also, we went 4-3, then a 3-4, then a 4-3/3-4 switching up, then a 4-3. i think we just need to stick to one base and go from there because people like ethan johnson gettin moved from outside player to inside, how can one person achieve at a position then continue to progress if he gets moved again

QB will be the most important piece to Kelly's team. Without the trigger man for the spread, you are dust, ask Michigan...

That goes for pretty much any offense. ND will be no different. If Crist comes back strong from his injury and stays healthy, he'll thrive in this offense. He's much more talented than Tony Oike (a former walk-on), and Pike lit everyone up this year...

Already posted in the press conference forum by someone else, but based on his coyness, I think we have a pretty good bet that Martin will be here after his NC game on Saturday.

Keeping Polian, Alford and Corwin is pretty smart on Kelly's part but i still think you should hire a proven defensive coach. Maybe the guy from Iowa. Solid d that stresses fundamentals is exactly what we need

Read between the lines fella's, Kelly said he was going to call Chuck martin on saturday after his game to congradulate him on his national champoinship at GV. Martin has made it clear that although he was asked already by Kelly to join him at cicny and declined, Notre Dame was a different case entirely. To quote Mr Martin, best freinds with Kelly, a remarkable 76-5 at GV and a defensive specialist " if ND wants to play great offense hire Kelly , if they want to play great defense hire me"--- that says it all to me. Expect him to be offered the job next week and to accept immediately!

How soon do you think it will be before all of the incoming and outgoing coaching positions shake out?

I find it hard to believe someone would leave a program they are the head coach at to be a DC.... Not against it but we'll i guess.

Didn't Kelly's boss at GV leave a head coach position to work for Holtz?

What were Cincy's defenses like in '07 & '08? They started 10 new starters in '09...

I think they gave up about 15 a game.

I actually really wish he would offer Corwin Brown his defensive coordinator position back, after he was demoted this past season under weis. I liked the way he called his plays in 07 and 08, but our offense couldnt keep the Defense off the field, and our dline was hitting its weakest depth in the past 20 years when he was calling the plays.

He got alot of the big name defensive recruits to come here, they believe in him. I dont like the idea of cincys d coordinator taking over. Just not a very good track record thus far.

Last year, Cincy's defense was really good. I believe they had three or four defensive players drafted last year so that's something to recognize.

In terms of DC, I would love to see if they could take one of the old faithfulls from Penn State. I can't remember their names, but their DC, linebackers coach, and Dline coach have been there for over 20 years and Penn State always has a great defense. Just a thought.

Its a different animal all together. Better coaches, better talent, better offenses.

But, according to the popular opinion around here, all our D needs is someone to coach them up on fundamentals. Fundamentals are fundamentals, from PeeWee League, to the NFL.

No most guys in High School play on natural ability and have to be taught technique in college

Reading keys, pursuit angles, and other basics are starting to be taught in high school more and more. They need to be fine toned in college of course. Some can get by, not all. Many do go on talent, you are correct in that. We have gotten big names here but they havent shown the mental aspect of winning defensively. I think Corwin can call the plays well and coach the DBs, but we need legit LB and DL coaches here to win.

On another topic, I really really really friggin hope we keep Alford. Our RBs are showing ability to do great things this year, and I dont want to lose the RB recruits because of the spread :(

The ONLY thing Polian is good at is recruiting. Cannot coach for shit...IMO

Special teams were up and down this year. Aside from the slip ups at UM (kickoff return td) and pitt, what else can you do? He can't kick for people.

You far underestimate what he does in recruiting. Take California, Manti, and Toma and cross them off the roster had it not been for Polian. We'll have to start all over again in building relationships, where Polian has dominated in the past 5 years.
