With Les Miles future tenuous last year LSU hired DC Dave Aranda with a 3 year contract. When LSU replaced Miles, Aranda keep his job. The 3 year contract was partly a hook to get him on board and partly a hook to deter poaching. Similar with Elko.

It could be a disincentive for a current HC who is tight with his DC but more likely not.

ND lost most of their games by a TD or less this year with 3 points being a common difference. IF Elko hoes what's expected of him, a new HC likely becomes moot.

Good point. I really think the return for ND is not as uphill as some make it out to be. Sure, always areas for improvement, but ND could just as easily have been 8-4 or 9-3. The staff changes are encouraging and have us headed in the right direction. Getting Wimbush ready for prime time is going to be critical, along with having a backup option in place.

Basically from that report some ND players got their own gym memberships to put extra work in because they feel like they weren't being pushed at all.

Koon you were right the whole time. BTW i'm really happy I gave you that nickname and it's the only thing you are called now. Like a proud father

If this is even 50% true, Longo is a fucking loser and should not be allowed on campus again.

I'm really looking forward to your insights on the new S and C hires training theories and programming principles. You're clearly very passionate and knowledgeable on the subject, I can't wait for the breakdown.

You don't have to have expert knowledge of a subject to recognize someone sucks at their job. If you think you do, you're not a very aware person.

Not Koon, and not nearly the expert he is, but I played college ball in the mid 90's at a small midwestern school. We used the exact S & C program that Nebraska used. Man was it awesome!!! That was 20 years ago, I cannot fathom that with today's technology and innovativeness, they have had these kinds of problems with the program.

Exactly. Remember when "he needs a few days on Longo Beach" was a saying for guys who needed a little extra toughness or discipline?

Longo Beach was probably a lot like the movie "Heavyweights" where those fat kids ride go-karts.

IIRC, Nebraska in the late 80's/early 90's was the first program with a full blown training table. They were years ahead of the game then.

Yes, and us being the small school that we were didn't have the luxury of a training table, but damn was that program a boss!!!!

Did you guys ever utilize the "dot drill?" We got a heavy dose of that after weights every day. It was one of those fads in the early 90's. I'm sure it is frowned upon now, seeing you are always one jump from a blown out knee for the duration of the drill.

No, we didn't have the dot board. Matter of fact, this is the first I've heard of the dot board.

From what I remember of it, it was all about % and reps certain times of the school year. We'd start out with lower % with higher number of reps, and the longer we went I'm the school year was higher % with lower reps. Also, Monday and Thursday would be upper body lifting while Tuesday and Friday would be legs, and they wouldn't be the same lifts every day.

We didn't have dot board but we had them painted on our floor. I don't think they are frowned upon
Ladder drills are still widely used. Not too different.

Like everything else, the field has progressed a lot. That Nebraska program was highly influential back in the day. It actually changed the college training culture entirely. Heavy bench, squat, and cleans. Simple and very effective. You can get brutally strong using that old school type training. Nowadays the training year is laid out in advance, and there is a wider variety of tools available. This guy didn't do a bad job his first few years here, that's why I'm so curious what changed in his training philosophy. There is a big focus on the basics in every program and so much information out there about physical preparation that it really confuses me what went wrong here.

Ah, the "speed" ladder. One of the biggest wastes of time spent in the gym. Does absolutely nothing to develop speed, reactivity, or force application. The kids love using these things though. Not picking on you Domer, I just can't stand these things.

Pretty standard upper/lower split. Sounds like you had a little Westside influence by your coach. Still to this day a viable training split and approach if implemented correctly. A lot of people have gotten away from percentage based training lately and VBT (velocity based training) is serially starting to take hold. Bar speed is measured by a device attached to lifter or bar and is measured in m/s. dependent on speed of bar determines strength quality being trained.

Dot drill was a standard workout cool down at my high school for football circa 2004-2008.

We still use dots as a warm-up every once in a while basically to just get the blood pumping before a lift

I gave Koon his name.

I disagree, I'm about 95% sure. Let Koon answer that and if he says you I will take my ball and go home. But I'm pretty sure I did because I had no idea how to pronounce his handle and I just broke it down to Koon. Him and I use to go at it so I'm almost positive I did. Like I did with NDinLA =)
