There certainly is openings. We need a QB coach and or OC or assistant in case Dennrock is promoted to OC.

There is openings in terms of title, but not spots.

1. Denbrock
2. Denson
3. Quinn
4. Polian
5. Hiestand
6. Elko
7. Elston
8. Lyght
9. The new LB coach

Including Denson as RB's coach and now you are one asst. coach over the limit. Only nine asst.'s allowed.

Then Briles isn't coming which I don't think he is I just can't think of another OC besides Denbrock. Part of me honestly thinks either Denbrock or Elston leaves. Leaning towards Elston

Right, the crazy thing is that at almost every other program it's the opposite... S&C coaches are always bordering on pushing kids TOO hard.

Should just go try and grab Carlisle's dad and be done with it.

I'll take ESBs dad as my gym coach any day. I got big "big toes"

ND Coaching Changes 2016

Wow been MIA all day.

Fantastic news with the demotion of Longo!

Even better news with Brian Polian coming back! Who recruits the West Coast now? Polian or Denbrock? I think Polian takes over the West Coast and I would have Denbrock pound the Midwest: Ohio, Penn, Illinois, Indiana and Michigan.

Agree with Lax we don't know why Briles was brought in. If it is for OC, my only concern is that his system has basically no route tree for WR's and doesn't prepare WR's for the NFL. But, if Briles is brought in in any fashion I'm hoping that gets Notre Dame back involved with my favorite WR recruit Mr. Hezekiah Jones

BTW I would love it if Elko could bring in that Michael Allen kid. WDE with offers from Bama, UGA, FSU, Florida, Miami, Ole Miss Heel yeah!

No way Denbrock leaves the West Coast, he has built to many relationships over the years to leave. Polian would switch regions but they both can hit Cali. Polian will be everywhere and will be our best recruiter. Probably will hit Texas pretty hard. No way they take Elston out of the Midwest, it will be a team effort all around. We need to win but we need to be a bunch of savages out on the recruiting trail this year. Class is already off to a nice start and I hope no one all year says this is going to be our best class since...... Nothing rustles me to much more then when certain posters do that on this site. It's a great start yes, but it's a long ass marathon.

This spring will be so damn important to this staff to get kids on campus early and try to forget about going 4-8 last year. They have no bowl game to prepare for so our main focus right now needs to be how we can get after it on the crootin trail. Because after going 4-8 it's not going to be easy at all. That's why it was huge to bring in Polian. Dude already knows how to do it at ND and does it pretty damn well. I hope the staff sits in the damn office for a week and figures out a gameplan to how they are going to do this. It's one of the most important things they will do as a staff.

Sherm did you think before you posted that lol

The other alternative is Briles coming in as an analyst or a high paid GA.

Realistically, now that Sark has been hired, where else is Briles going to get another high profile opportunity to coach next year? Until the whole lawsuit gets settled, I cant see anyone hiring him.

ND could be a good learning opportunity at a high profile university and assist BK with the QB's. Briles could spend a year here as an analyst and then hopefully if Denbrock finally gets a head coaching gig next year, he could slot right in as the OC.

Briles mentoring Winbush could be lethal.

Great call there hermano, who knows what him and Kelly talked about today. I have a hard time believing it was a scenario where Briles wanted to do some sight seeing. With all the hires going on right now it just makes sense that there was more to this convo. Snap him before someone else does, Auburn was going after him HARD if there OC left. He's a wanted man, pretty sure this was his first stop as well. This wasn't a meeting or Kelly trying to pick Briles brain. The timing IMO say's it all.

Don't see either leaving. Elston has been with Kelly for 13 years and genuinely likes being at ND.

Any word on Elliott? Could Kelly give Denbrock the "Special Assistant to Head Coach" title? Maybe move elliot to an analyst position. Opens a spot for Briles being OC/ QB coach and Polian coaches WR/Spt...

Sounds like a title Dwight Shrute would have.

Thats a pretty loaded staff...make Polian a recruiter at large with focus only on DTs. Dog 'em wherever they be. Get me some kegs with legs, and develop the Oline, and ND football will be a force.

I have a hard time seeing him leaving as well but I was just saying if Denbrock or Elston left I think it would be him.

Maybe you can consider I know Driskell brought it up if there will be any friction? With some players going public to bat for Elston that maybe he feels like he is ready for be a DC and he will go to some school to prove that. I know Elston loves ND and I don't think he is that guy to do that but can two bulldogs get along in the same meeting rooms when one has the job and the other one thinks it should have been him? Plus we have heard Elko will bring his guys and the defense is his what if he doesn't want Elston because of stuff like this? I think BK has the final call.

I am just saying I don't think Elston leaves but would it shock me if he did leave? Nope

It's speculated on scout and I forget where else he will be on the staff and it will most likely be coaching the TE's. Which after Eifert left has been a no show and it needs some fresh ideas. It's Aliz'e job and two studs coming in.

Maybe Luatua gets undropped this year? Smythe will be what he's always been and hopefully Weishar can continue to grow. Really intrigued by this position this year. Do Kmet and Wright come in and basically pass up the vets? Wouldn't shock me and if they did it kind of scares me about how these guys have been coached the last few years because those three guys I mentioned above were four star recruits and had some pretty decent offers. Outside of Aliz'e who is a freak and I'm not worried about him at all. I could coach him and he still would be the All American potential he is.

Then you are taking away one of Denbrock's strengths, recruiting.

And his best coaching ability and that's at the WR position. Just let that man focus on that and still be Kelly's right hand man. Let Briles call the plays or design the offense with Kelly. No reason Denbrock still can't be in those meetings.

Maybe Kelly after seven years of being at ND and seeing this offense just wants something fresh and some new ideas. Which is what he should have done with Sanford

They need a position coach opening in order to bring Briles in. They have 9 already. As far as recruiting Denbrock can still recruit just can't have in home visits or travel. Plus it's not like Briles can't recruit. It was just a suggestion in order to keep Denbrock, Elston, and still be able to bring in Briles.

What makes anyone think that anyone other than Brian Kelly will be the OC in 2017?

Kelly might and probably will go back to calling the plays. You still need an OC to put a game plan together. Probably use a QB coach as well because be hard for Kelly to be the OC, head coach and coach the QB's. Especially with all the other shat he's gotta do with being the head coach at ND

You could have Mike feckin Ditka coach TE's and donate the money to the Vatican and it won't increase production of inline TE's as long as Kelly is being Kelly. AJ will be fine cuz he's gonna line up all over the place. I don't know why they just don't recruit the most athletic 6-7 255 lb OT in the country who has great everything except weight and turn him into an every down tackle eligible. If you're not throwing to them, let them dominate the line and who knows maybe he grows into an OT like Jason Spriggs did right under their noses in Elkhart & IU.

If Denbrock's not in a recruiting position, I'll sh!t a sea urchin.

I don't think Elston looks at the situation like that at all. He will also still be recruiting coordinator as well. Elko is only bringing one guy with him and Gilmore is the odd man out. Elston and Elko will work together well.

Dude, I am not saying they won't get along. They probably will but it's a thought to think about and something Driskell brought up. All college coaches have to swallow their pride and work together.

That hurts my feelings.

Both Polian and Denbrock have deep relationships on the West Coast, especially in California. Honestly Polia. Has deeper roots, especially being at Nevada for a stint. Maybe the double team, you know DP, Cali.

That's what I'm saying man, keep them both in Cali have Polian hit Texas. Both have to be in Cali, I thought you wanted to pull him from Cali, can't happen

Alternatively, for this very reason, I have no issue at all since there currently isn't any evidence or reports that he was directly involved in any cover up.

Perhaps not but he doesn't have a pristine record either. How many formerly suspended coaches has ND hired in the past? I can't think of any.

Baylor addresses report of NCAA investigation involving Kendal Briles

Briles, the son of fired coach Art Briles, and wide receivers coach Tate Wallis were suspended for last year's game against Lamar.

The school said the two assistants committed a violation related to evaluations of prospective student-athletes during this previous spring recruiting period.

Question about Elko: does us giving him a three year contract make it harder to hire a new HC if we were to fire Kelly next year? I've gotta imagine not being able to bring in your own DC is a big problem for a lot of potential HC's.

It depends on how good the defense is next year.. If we have a good defense, and we let Kelly go and bring in an offensive coach, its prob not a big deal and if it is, we just let him go and eat the buyout

With Les Miles future tenuous last year LSU hired DC Dave Aranda with a 3 year contract. When LSU replaced Miles, Aranda keep his job. The 3 year contract was partly a hook to get him on board and partly a hook to deter poaching. Similar with Elko.

It could be a disincentive for a current HC who is tight with his DC but more likely not.

ND lost most of their games by a TD or less this year with 3 points being a common difference. IF Elko does what's expected of him, a new HC likely becomes moot.
