Randy Shannon is the co-DC at FL. I think there's a decent shot he slides into the DC role and they hire a position coach to backfill.

Could have sworn someone on here was talking about how they wanted a defense that was like Ohio St. rather than a bend don't break. Which either means:
1. Ohio St. shouldn't be (or isn't) interested in the guy because he would change their very successful scheme.
Or
2. If we land the guy we are getting a guy who Ohio St. struck out on and we should all be very excited to see what he's going to do for us.

Or the Very Real:

3. Urban Meyer takes stuff from Notre Dame for giggles and could and would get a van full of nuns on it's way to South Bend to flip to Ohio State, so there's that.......

really just half joking,.... kind of....

If Florida takes Elko, I wouldn't mind going after Shannon for our DC.

Though I do agree that it is very likely that Florida just promotes him to DC.

Please no.

I know the kids think highly of him, however, there needs to someone established on the defensive side of the ball

What are your gripes against Elston as DC other than he is one of Kelly's guys?

So what about polian as recruiting coordinator/ tight end coach, elston stays on as LB coach promoted to co-DC, and bring on elko as DC.

Any merit to that?

I think it would be good to get someone outside of Kelly's norm to add a little different influence on the program. Plus Elko has shown to make a defense better with him in charge of it, the proof is there!

Not saying that Elston isn't capable but I want someone from the outside and let's see how it goes.

Yes....Like I said I like to clean house, but if ELKO is of the mind to bring one key guy...then this works.

Nothing personal against Coach Elston......I think one day soon hes gonna make a pretty good DC, I just don't feel it starts next season, and the prospect of Mike Elko as DC and what he's done with MUCH less talent is exciting to say the least. I think Elston would learn quite a bit from Elko and in a few years take the ND DC job or a DC job somewhere else.

They think elko is a long shot for what? Maybe I'm missing something but idk what Florida has to do with eljo.

Longshot for the Florida DC job. There were rumors floating around that they were a contender for Elko's services.

What about Vince Marrow for TE coach? As a bonus, he is a tremendous recruiter and has plenty of connections in the mid west, especially in Urban's back yard.

Would you leave your lifelong buddy Mark Stoops to go work for a guy whose neck is on the block? If he leaves for anywhere, it would probably be next year if an offensive job opens up at OSU. He's also HS buddies with Tim Beck.

Maybe.... he is good enough as a recruiter that I could see the next coach wanting him. I know he is good friends with Stoops but we are talking Notre Dame vs KY in football. Friendship aside, one of those schools is better than the other.

Without a doubt ND's better but he's at the confluence of the Stoops / Meyer matrix and BK has a noose on his neck. Can't change those facts. Plus he makes $275k and is due for another raise next June. I doubt the money would be worth the trouble.

Are we really better than Kentucky? I'm thinking if we were in the sec we would be about that grade.

You talking about one impossibly bad season or in general? Because even playing as bad as possible this year, in terms of efficiency on the field ND was 31st. Kentucky was 68th. And the SEC was atrocious OOC this year besides Bama. Florida, who won the east, was 38th.

ND played about as well as an 8-4 or 9-3 team... just managed to go 1-7 in 8 close games, because (inset long ass list of reasons).

As an aside, one of the main reasons I'm so optimistic for next year is that we'll obviously be a better team and a better team who just gets a normal amount of breaks to go their way is going to have a very good record.
