FWIW, I'd also characterize myself as a "Kelly supporter".
My fandom began in earnest as a freshman at ND in 2002, so I was in the stands for Willingham's entire tenure and most of Weis'. Kelly's been the most successful coach at ND since I've been paying attention; his highs were higher and his lows (at least until this last season) weren't nearly as damaging as his immediate predecessors. When Kelly hands off the reins to a new HC, likely late next year, the new guy will be inheriting a much stronger program than the one Kelly stepped into in 2009.
But that doesn't mean he ought to coach us indefinitely. After 'Bama humiliated us in the titled game, Murtaugh published a
4-part series at OFD on rebuilding ND's football program. One of his best points is that, regardless of whether Kelly ever wins a title, he's done us a huge service by establishing an 8-win "floor" at ND; because losing seasons do a significant amount of damage to the program which often take several years to repair.
But then he let to bottom fall out this past season, going 4-8 against the
softest schedule we've had in nearly a decade. So I can't apologize for him anymore. I'm grateful for what he's done for the program, but it's clearly time to move on.
