Just pointing out that 3.3-3.6 range is on an unweighted 4.0 scale. My weighted GPA is roughly a 3.9 I believe. I take a bunch of APs/honors classes, thanks for your opinion though I really appreciate all the input guys.

GPA is difficult to put a hard and fast value on, as it depends on the quality of the workload and in many cases the quality of the applicants around you. No one can tell you any one part of your application "won't cut it" without knowing the whole story (well, besides standardized tests). My hs valedictorian did not get in, and I did (number 12 in my hs class), mostly due to my strong ACT and personal essay. We were really similar in other facets of our application.

A college application is a very complex puzzle, goodluck brother and if I can help let me know.

Holy Cross College across the street. It is nice being around ND, but it is not the same. Definitely a good alternative for a year or two though if you are trying to get into Notre Dame. It provides the structure needed to succeed, there are some amazing professors, small class sizes, and a pretty tight knit community. Plus, its nice that we get to go to all the ND games for about $30,000 less a year :)

notredomer23- I will look into Holy Cross as the idea of being close to ND is appealing to me, but I can't say I know much about the school beyond it being close to ND. I'm glad to hear you like it though. Sounds awesome.

ShakeDown- Everyone says college admissions is a crapshoot... Thats very cool that you got in! Hopefully I follow in your footsteps. I've tried getting excited about other schools, and I have to a degree, but I'll never like another place as much as ND. I've pretty much resolved with myself that whatever happens happens and hopefully I'll be lucky enough to get in

If you have any questions about Holy Cross, let me know. Ryanarrow is also a freshman at HCC and I am sure he'd be more than willing to answer any questions.

I went to Holy Cross my freshman year (07-08). 4 of my friends got into Notre Dame. They all got in after their freshman year. I realized Notre Dame wasn't the right path for me, when I realized that no matter what I wanted to become a teacher, and it wasn't practical to pay that much money (If I got in). The transfer route is a great way to go, if you don't get in as a freshman.

Wait is it a 3.9 or a 3.3-3.6? 3.9 you've got a very real shot, 3.3-3.6 not so much.

I'll keep that in mind!

On another note, can anyone explain the personality/reputation of the dorms on campus? I know every dorm has their own unique events and functions... I ask mainly because I wonder why everyone says to avoid Zahm. haha

anyone who says avoid zahm is a coward. zahm rules. if anything, carroll actually seems lame because it's really far from everything. But obviously notre dame rules. So weird to see these acceptance letters when I'm set to graduate in a few weeks. Oh well, it's been a great ride.

Congrats on the acceptance letters! I remember opening mine some twenty years ago, one of the purest moments of joy in my life that was quickly interupted by the epiphany of "how the F am I going to pay for this?!?" Eternal gratitude to my grandparents who helped make my dream possible. Thankfully, 100% of "need" is supposedly covered these days and I hope none of you share that end of my experience.

A decade later I had a similar experience opening my University of Chicago MBA acceptance letter. Incredible the amount of stress you can put on yourself during an admission process. I echo the sentiments expressed by others here that this is not your defining moment, what you do from here is the true test, accepted or not.

Haha, that was a complete joke. All dorms are awesome and you'll love your new brothers.

Hotel Flanner, may she rest in peace.

At least Flanner still stands and is being used for its intended purpose.

Holy Cross Hall has been reduced to the backstop of the ball field, ashes from bonfires and a cheeky headstone complete with plastic flowers.

To continue with what notredomer23 said, Holy Cross is a great school to start at if you can't get into Notre Dame right away. The academics at Holy Cross are good and every professor wil know who you are. You are literally right across the street from Notre Dame and the atmosphere during football season is unreal, especially last year. So even though you don't go to Notre Dame, you get to experience a lot of the same things the Notre Dame students do. Good Luck.

I just got a great PM from Domeisourhome. Let's all congratulate another IE member to the ND family! Not only is he part of the family, he's a part of the greatest ND family - the TRANSFERS!

For any other fellow transfers our there, congrats on all your hard work! You've earned the next three years at ND!

Don't ever let anyone undermine what you accomplished and never forget how lucky you are. Work hard. Play hard. And enjoy every second of your time at ND. You may regret everything else in your life, but you'll never regret this decision.

Again, congrats and soak in what you've done! I remember the day I got my call from Transfer admissions (the Math department was late with their letters so I got a call). It was the greatest day of my life; I'll never forget the moment in time when my dreams came true. It was truly an emotional moment. I hope it is for all of you too.

Thanks for the recognition. I was overwhelmed when I received my notice that I was accepted. I was super excited and tears were shed over the fact that my hard work has finally paid off. Even though it's a year later than what I had hoped, I will still be a part of the ND family. Can't wait to be home under the Dome finally!

congratulations man.there is no better feeling than being rewarded for your own dedication and sacrifice!

Congratulations on your success. Many are called and truly few are chosen.

Now you need to change your username to a well earned Domeismyhome.

Domeisour, a chara,

Tá súil agam go bhfuil do chuid ama ag Notre Dame léir go raibh súil agat as! Ba mhaith liom tú an chuid is fearr de fhortún, agus tá súil agam go bhfuil tú brabús mhór. Níos mó cumhachta a thabhairt duit!

I'll take a shot at this. My Irish is a little rusty though.

Dear Domeisour,

I hope that your time at Notre Dame is all you hoped for! I wish you the best of fortune, and I hope that you have a large profit. More power to you!

Bring victory and blessings,

I have a few questions...

How big of an impact does being a minority (Hispanic in my case) make for admission Notre Dame?

It helps a lot. Lack of diversity is a common knock on ND, and the University has struggled to improve on this front for decades. Hispanic undergraduate enrollment is currently 9%; as jimmymac noted, other minorities have a larger advantage, but being Hispanic is worlds more advantageous than being one of the ~5 million Caucasian applicants named Matt or Mike from the Midwest.

My great uncle is an alumni of ND, my grandfather went to Notre Dame for three years before he had to leave to support his family. Neither of my parents graduated college, and while my grandfather spent time in college I don't believe he got his degree. Does this qualify me as a first generation college student?

So you're: (1) a minority; (2) a legacy; (3) and projected to be the first one in your family to graduate from college? Your personal statement writes itself, and it will make the Admissions Officer moist.

Seriously though, 25% of each incoming class is reserved for legacies. It's much less competitive than the general applicant pool. Factor in your minority heritage, etc. and you're in a great position.

Edit: If Domeisourhome's post below is correct, you won't be considered a legacy; but you should still be a competitive applicant for the other reasons listed above.

Is it possible to get in with average academics (GPA in a 3.3-3.6 range) if an applicant has a "hook," such as founding a charity, being a published author, etc?

A 3.9 weighted is definitely good enough for the applicant pools you'll be competing in.

Congrats! Very few undergraduates truly appreciate ND as students, except for the transfers. Relish every moment.

I got denied again. Pretty disillusioned with the whole process considering I had above the average GPA for transfers, 2 alumni, and loads of extracurriculars. Oh well. And it wasn't as if I was taking a joke schedule. This past semester I took biology, calculus, and physics. Talk about murder for someone not majoring in anything even close to related to that.
