Saw 1917 tonight. Just a bit less than 3 out of 4 stars. The story is more Hollywood than reality. I wanted to like it but it tried to hard.
Lots of good, but lacking in plot. Enjoyable but ultimately too flawed for the nominations it has.Seeing 1917 on Monday, just to see how big on haters you all really are,...
The Irishman was excellent. Holy hell.
1917 was very good.
Just finished it tonight. It really is outstanding.
I liked the Irishman for all the same reasons I like good Scorsese but I didn't think it was on par with his other mob movie films, the first act was largely a jumbled mess in comparison to his usual standards, and then the end just drug on a bit too long.
I don't think it really needed the plot device of them being on the road trip together. Just go through the plot chronologically and you don't really miss anything.
Oscar Nominations are out; Parasite deserves Best Picture.
And won it. Well deserved.
You think that Parasite was a Korean Woody Allen film? I think you and I watched different movies...
Should have been more specific. It felt to me like Match Point by Woody Allen. First half of the movie is kinda funny, with a lot of sneaking around. Second half of the movie becomes a thriller after someone randomly gets killed. Stylistically there were a lot of similarities.
Parasite is about a poor family that cons their way into working for a rich family before the former housekeeper's husband who was living in the cellar of the house for 4 years goes on a killing spree. Oh and the rich dad privately told his wife that his well-paid driver smelled bad which made the driver murder him?
I mean, what? It's hilarious because it's accurate. Again, the movie was really good, and I would see it again, but I am totally shocked it got enough support to win Best Picture.
The Gentlemen was another fun Guy Ritchie film.
Okay this actually makes way more sense. I actually thought the transition was pretty good, because everything seems off when the housekeeper comes to the house in the rain. Nothing about that felt right.
I'm with you though, I'm shocked that Parasite ended up with enough support to win BP. Perhaps in another year they wouldn't have, but I thought the nominees were overall weak (I loved Parasite though). Uncut Gems and The Lighthouse absolutely should have been nominated.
I think my issue is that I kept reading "don't read anything about Parasite before seeing it" so I expected something totally unique and fresh. I guess maybe my expectations were way too high.
I remember seeing No Country for Old Men before I even knew it had Oscar hype. I remember walking out of that movie thinking...wow that should win Best Picture. Felt that way about the Departed, Gladiator, LOTR, and Slumdog Millionaire, too. Just didn't get that feeling from Parasite.

My wife made us all watch Ace Ventura this weekend... I've never sat and watched the whole thing and fully understand why now. It's awful in every way a comedy can be. I didn't so much as smile at a single 'joke' in the entire movie. That has to be the lamest 'hit' movie ever... how did it make so much money??!! I was kind of pissed offf for like an hour or so afterwards like, "1, never make me watch something so stupid again babe, and 2. how dafaq is that dude considered some comic genius!?"
