Should I rewatch Blade Runner beforehand? I've seen it probably 5 times but not in the last 3 years.

I don't think that it's necessary. My wife had only seen Bladerunner once and doesn't really remember it, and she was able to follow.

I watched Get Out this weekend. Incredible intelligent thriller that has a 99 on Rotten Tomatoes. I give it 5 stars.

Watch it. And don't read anything about it beforehand.

I watched "Lucky Number Slevin" for the first time. It was tonally weird. It went from brutal to comedic & quirky and back to dark & brutal. It went from being a too cute Tarantino knock-off to swinging hard to being a forced "The Usual Suspects" knock-off.

I really liked this movie. The point where everything starts to blow up is a total paradigm shift.

I believe this movie was supposed to be a nod to "North by Northwest".

Lucky Number Slevin is one of my favorite movies, precisely because it has a little bit of everything. I love the dry, dark humor, and the amount of twists and "aha" moments through the film that all tie together in the end is a huge, wonderful curveball IMO.

I thought it also handled the development of Slevin's romance well. They managed to make the relationship important in a extremely short amount of time, while also avoiding total cheesiness. It matched his character well.

Dialogue was cool, pacing was better (so many things happen, and so much story is developed, in such a short time without feeling overwhelming), payoff was outstanding.

watched this over the weekend and fuck man Adam Sandler is actually really great in this. It's probably the best performance he's ever done.

He got rave reviews for another movie recently that flew under the radar. "Serious Sandler" is suddenly a hit.

"Blade Runner 2049." I saw it on IMAX and it was visually stunning. Good performances all around. I thought it moved a little too slowly. I like a movie that takes its time to unfold but this one meandered a bit. It was still quite a cinematic experience.

Baby Drive [SPOILERS].

Movie was pretty damn good. The opening scene was phenomenal, as was the cool-down scene immediately after.

Buddy's turn as the main antagonist in the end was actually well done, even though he turned into a cliche. It looked like he was going to be more complex (the same with his wife, Darling), based on his efforts to personalize and understand Baby in the beginning, but he was just psycho husband in the end... that was disappointing, but it somehow still played very well for the plot. Kind of conflicting.

I also liked the rapid turn from criminal-to-criminal as antagonists. You go from bad cop from Walking Dead, to Kevin Spacey, then to Jaime Foxx, then back to Kevin Spacey, then to Don Draper.

And then Kevin Spacey has an inexplicable soft spot in his heart for Baby based on young love, and is a supporting protagonist in the end? It seemed like a deus ex machina curveball, but I actually really liked it. It was another cliche, but was also unpredictable for the most part because of how "professional" Spacey's character was as a criminal, and also because his relationship with Baby didn't have much development to foreshadow it beyond "you're my lucky charm, Baby." And that foreshadowing was sort of a red herring, because it was delivered as an imposing line early on, kind of like "I own you, Baby."

I would watch it again for the entertainment. Wish they would've given us a full scene of Baby driving to "Run the Jewels," though.

Do you guys only watch new movies? Y'all never just click around on Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Prime and pick something out of the blue for either no reason or just because it caught your eye?

A couple of weeks ago, I watched

...and yes, you do see Charles Bronson in one of those photos

(and yes this movie came out before I was alive).

Soon I will be searching out the old Hammer horror films of the 60's and 70's because Halloween

Yeah I thought it was dragging along too. I think Blade Runner is really good, but there seemed to be a lot of excess in just about everything. Leto's replicant henchman (forgot her name) did a great job.

I also saw Kung Fu Yoga with some buds. One of those "so bad it's good" movies; it's essentially an Indiana Jones ripoff, and you can see the "homage" coming in most scenes.

Watched Kong: Skull Island. It had its moments, but was mostly disappointing. They should have stayed closer to the original script, but nothing has topped the original yet.

Started to watch Kung Fu Yoga, but it was completely subtitled and I was too tired at the time. I can read a movie if I am interested, but if not fully into it, reading a whole one, I may miss bits and pieces.

Probably the 2nd best movie of the year for me thus far. I enjoyed the turn of Buddy because it made some sense and had been foreshadowed. My only major criticism was the out of nowhere change of heart from Spacey's character, for the same reasons you said above. I saw nothing in his character that made that make sense.

I originally thought the same thing but came around on the pacing. It was a long movie but I can't think of a scene you could cut out without damaging the product. The more I mull on Bladerunner, the more I'm seriously considering pushing that into "masterpiece" territory.

Would you mind expounding on this for me? I am interested in your thoughts on it. I have watched it multiple times and I keep hoping the "A HA!" moment occurs and it hasnt yet. I know it is supposed to be good but I have a hard time watching it and deciding what actually makes it as good as everyone else does.

"Baby Driver" is the best movie I've seen, this year. The integration of the soundtrack with the action was unique, and very enjoyable. My only gripe was that he didn't drive the STI more!

Saw 2049 and thought it was visually amazing and the audio was great. Acting was good. But story and pacing was poor

I don' think any scene needed to be outright cut, but some trimming could've been done. There are scenes of Ryan Gosling just walking really slowly or staring at something at far too long. It felt like the director was wallowing in the visuals (which are amazing). But I got to the point where I was thinking, "Yeah, the scenery is great but let's get going."

I just finished watching an oldie but a goodie, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. I knew what it was about, but had never actually seen it before. Nicholson's never been an actor I liked, but he did an outstanding job in the role. I kept thinking that Billy looked familiar so I looked him up... the same actor who would many years later play Grima Wormtongue in the LOTR movies. Anyway, there's a good reason this is considered a great, must-see movie.

I recently saw a couple of lists of the 100 greatest movies ever and it made me realize I've probably only seen 1/2 of them at most. Gonna try to knock them all out over the next couple of years.

Only the Brave was fantastic. Bring your tissues though it'll rip your heart out. Great performances across the board. It was like a better version of the Patriots Day/ Deepwater Horizon formula.

"Harlan County, USA." For those who don't know, this is considered one of the top documentaries ever made. It's about a coal miner strike in Eastern KY in the early 70s. It's good in the sense that it doesn't have the cute flourishes that some modern docs have that try too hard to be artistic or entertaining. "Harlan" is a straight-forward put-your-camera-where-the-action-is-and-let-it-roll.

That being said, I read an article that put the movie very well; that the movie is definitely partisan. The filmmakers lived, literally, with the striking workers so it's obvious where the sympathy lies and whose story they are telling. You get a lot of the striking miners' side but not much of the mine owners. Still, it's pretty involving stuff and a glimpse into a very different slice of life.

Finally saw Ben Affleck in The Accountant. It was OK. However, I figured out the two biggest twists at the end by the middle of the movie latest. Jon Bernthal was very good in it. Anna Kendrick was wasted and just did her standard quirky, stammering bit to bring any life to the character. The only character that had any connection to the audience were the FBI agents (JK Simmons & Cynthia Addai-Robinson)
