Amazing the amount of head coaches, OC's, DC's, players...etc....who don't want to play school.
I wish that was my feeling. The more I think about it, the more I think ND fucked themselves. Finally had a very good DC who could recruit. Any fan of ND knows that is a rare commodity. Other than Diaco’s first couple of years it’s been a steady stream of medicocre DCs.

On the reason he came to Texas A&M...
"I just think it was the excitement of what was going on down here. I think a chance to come down here and win a national championship and compete in the SEC in the best division in the country – just a lot of excitement down here."
Something to remember when we bitch about Brian Kelly. He has never once complained (publicly) about the academic expectations at Notre Dame. In general he embraces them.
It would bee very difficult to not say something.

So, just curious about this quote. Is he saying that there was no chance of winning a National Championship at ND?

It's called coach speak. No coach has EVER said "I came here for the $$" when asked why they went somewhere, even though $$ and stability are the primary drivers 99% of the time.
I get that this is coach speak and to not take it literally. I just find it interesting that he used the national championship wording. I mean, of course he used it coming here 'cause the opportunity of winning a natti at ND truly is greater than at Wake. So is that the same going from ND to TAMU in his mind?
It's a resume builder.
He did 10 years of Eastcoast FCS, 4 years of MAC, 3 years at Wake, a year at ND, he'll do 2 years at aTm and he'll get a HC job. aTm checks the two biggest boxes left, the SEC and puts him in the biggest football producer.
He now gets to skip the G5 jobs and Kansas. His resume is bulletproof if he looks good at aTm.

No it doesn't. The sting isn't the fact that he won't spend his last year or two before becoming a HC here. It's the fact that our team has taken yet another step back after finally showing some serious progress, both as a program and defensively. It's the fact that recruiting will almost definitely be impacted, and not for the better. It's the fact that these players are potentially looking at having a 4th DC in 3 years, and possibly a 3rd scheme. He won’t be there for more than 2 years
Takes the sting out of it if you see it that way

I'm not sure what HC gig he will get especially if he only stays 2 or 3 at A&M. He will have done an okay job if they finish 4th in the SEC W, and a good job if they finish 3rd. A&M will not be better than Bama or AUB over the next 3 years, I'd be willing to bet my house on it. IMO he still ends up at Kansas, or some other smallish school to start.
Muck Fike Elko!!!
IMO if he's looking for a HC job, I would think he stood a better chance staying Irish. Next season's schedule for us isn't great, but A&M's ain't great either. They've got Clemson, they're at Alabama, at Auburn, and the rest of their SEC West slate which is up and down. The fact remains they are unlikely to ever win their division because they're not getting past Alabama save for maybe a fluke Johnny Football moment, and after that impossible hurdle they still have Auburn/LSU/Mississippi State. Most years A&M won't be better than any one of those 3, let alone top them all each year. So short term he's making more money, but I can't see this helping his resume more than if he had stayed another year and tried for a HC position.
Couldn't agree more with your post. If Elko stuck around and ND won 10 games next year and the year after, AND they were being talked about most of the year as a playoff team his resume would be stronger IMO. He sold out for the money now, but I think in 6 years he will be making 800k somewhere and not 2 Mil+ as a head coach because of this decision.
Here's a tough choice...given only two possible options: Elko stays for the bowl game as he did and helps us beat LSU to get to 10 wins, or Elko leaves early allowing us more time to find a replacement (And we probably lose to LSU), which option do you take?
