I don't bother getting attached to assistant coaches. If they are good, I expect them to leave for other opportunities, which is completely natural and expected. Love the Freeman hire, love what he's done in practices and with recruiting, but the idea that he's already been handed the keys seems rather premature to me at this juncture. However good me might be, it's just a bad idea. Circumstances could change and you could have the opportunity to hire someone else that you might like better that you never thought would be available (not Urban Meyer for all you rubber sheet sleepers). If it isn't in writing, it means nothing.
Take it from someone who saw this happen to a close friend at the Division I level. He was the head coach in waiting and before he knew it the HC stepped down, the AD went with someone else and my friend was looking for work.
I think Kelly has done a marevlous job since 2016 of extending his reach with hiring coaches. It started with Long and Elko. It continued with Freeman and some of the other assistants these past few years. These guys still need people around them they know and trust (Rees, Quinn) but getting outside of that comfort zone has been pivotal for him in getting this thing back on track after that 4-8 season.
