Just to make sure, everyone here realizes that Cowherd has the least amount of knowledge/integrity of about any ESPN guys, right? He is relatively stupid and uninformed... but he is a great personality. Basically a shock jock very good at captivating listeners/viewers but not very well respected/"in the loop" kind of guy. He almost got fired not too long ago for some very childish antics on ESPN Radio that the network had to come out and apologize for.

I'm very far from an "in the know" when it comes to the big wigs at ESPN (I've only had one article published on their main page and do my sports writing as a purely part time gig for fun) but I've talked with guys over there enough to know that Cowherd is not a "source" to be trusted ever. Until you see something leaked by a more reliable guy or put in print there is no point in waiting with bated breath for the other shoe to drop.

Cowherd deals in opinions and rumors... not facts.

The funny thing is that the only team that I would be "shocked" about is VaTech.

Re:phork & VT---I would also be very surprised if it was VaTech. I've met most of their coaching staff and they don't seem that kind of guy. Plus, their M.O. for recruiting isn't "normal" for pay-off-style shenanigans [they rely on their intensely concentrated recruiting areas and their familiarities with the area high school coaches.] My brother and one of the staff told me that if I ever see a player on their roster from outside that area-of-focus, they did not recruit him, but the player went out of his way to put himself in front of them. But Beamer just shook up his recruiting staff system, so who knows?? His reasons were rational [and concerned with incursions into their normal stomping grounds by programs {such as us and Michigan, by the way}], and mainly to head off UVA, who has mysteriously whipped them on top recruits lately.

Not mysteriously. When Mike London was hired at UVa he said the VT monopoly on the under privileged kids in Virginia was over. London is from Hampton Roads and coached at Richmond. He knows the Virginia Beach and Richmond areas like the back of his hand and is a young, firey and very motivating guy. UVa is going to win a lot of battles against VT on the recruiting trail in years to come.

I have absolutely no proof (let me reiterate, zero proof!) of this but I've got a gut feeling that Oregon is the next major team going down the USC, Miami of the 80's, UNC, Michigan and Florida (probably in the near future) path. By that I mean loss of scholarships, practice time and NCAA investigations in general.

Anyone else?

This was my post back on 10-21-2010 for which I was ridiculed for (it was in the "UCLA at Oregon" thread if you want to look it up).

D@mn it feels good to be a gangster.

Here's the odd thing... Oregon isn't the only one paying this guy... nor are they the one getting the most prospects from him. Seems like a bit of an unprovable witch hunt at the moment unless there is more to this story.

You wanna cookie or something?? :)

I do like cookies but the respect of others will do just fine! Good to know my gut still has some accurate feelings, now if I could just get the whole betting thing down...

I don't think this is going to lead anywhere. I mean the school is paying a recruiting service for information? Only link they might have is if some player comes out and says "Yes, the service guided me to go school X."

Even then, it's very gray. Services are often supposed to give advice (the same way coaches are) and bias is unavoidable. I'll say it again... if Oregon is guilty, every single other school who paid that man and got a recruit should also be guilty.

Sure, if it was that black and white. I have no idea how these things typicall work, but from what I've read...

1.) It sounds as though the payment was made right after Seastrunk committed.
2.) It was 8.5k more then the payments they made for the same services the previous year to the same company.
3.) Apparently it's 5x the amount paid to other companies for the same services.

If this place was collecting the same amount from other schools, ok, some of the smoke dies down.

But that's an awful lot of things that just don't sound right. Maybe it is common place, but from the information provided in the reports, the type of circumstances around this guy and Oregon seem to be a bit off-putting to say the least.

I'm curious what evidence, proof, or even hint of an NCAA violation you found in that article to warrant your post. Correct me if I misread the article but it appears Lyles was paid $8,500 more for unspecified services rendered to Oregon than he was paid for services in the previous 2 years.

Am I supposed to jump to the conclusion that for $8,500 a guy spent his time and resources "steering" a blue chip (or blue chips plural) to a given school? He could make more money off of running a "clean" 7 on 7 camp.

Albert Means coach put a 6 figure sum on his head. Reggie Bush's payoff was in 6 figures. Cam Newton's dad supposedly was shopping a 6 figure sum. The numbers in that article don't compute. And if somebody's mom was involved in the arrangement her cut would have amounted to about the equivalent to one month's check for a Social Security recipient.

I know very little about Chip Kelly. I no less about what services "recruiters" sell to schools. I'm not familiar with any regulations impacting such services. Coaches through their schools must comply with NCAA rules, however Jerry Tarkanian, Slick Rick, Carroll, and others have shown NCAA enforcement powers lacking. Boosters can be banned from a program by the NCAA but that actual enforcement is handled by the sanctioned schools coaches, administrators, and ticket takers. Yeah the ticket takers at the stadium are actually the front line in enforcing a booster's ban. Somehow I doubt they get mug shots, fingerprints and B.O.L.O. alerts.

Until somebody establishes some real money changing hands or agent contracts, there will be no sanctions.

About the best that could come out of it are some NCAA regs keeping the recruiting services off campus (I don't know how you enforce it) and keep coaches from having any contact with them.

I live in Oregon and believe me, nothing would make me happier than to see these *******s eat some crow. I got a LOT of **** around here during their run (bunch of fair-weather fans.)

That being said, I have a hard time believing they tried to do anything shady and pay them with an official U of O check. I might not like their fans, but this is not a stupid athletic department, or one who wants their name run through the mud... (Phil Knight and Nike.)

Phil Knight would personally fire every breathing soul in the AD if this happened.. and they know that. Not for any sense of values or ethics, but for what it would do to the Nike bottom line.

If this is what all the hoopla was about, it won't amount to anything. They need a better line than this. Basically, I'm echoing what the BGIF said.

Can't they claim that the person they paid was a recruiter for them? Hired by the staff to recruit kids to go to Oregon?
