I still think this can blow up --

"Willie said he was a trainer," Evelyn Seastrunk said. "Now Oregon says he's a scout. Is he on Oregon's payroll?..."

"...If Willie Lyles collected $25,000 off my son he needs to be held accountable. The NCAA must find out for me..."

If the NCAA interviews Evelyn Seastrunk and she says, "Yea, he helped us choose. He said he was just a trainer, and was very convincing in getting my son to attend Oregon. He said it was the best place for him" then I can see this being more then any everyday occurance. Well, it would be, just not one that gets reported.

It almost sounds as though the mom might have an axe to grind after she found out about the payment.

Yeah, that's all intriguing and stuff, but let's get back to the important stuff irishpat183 talked about.

IP83, did you not notice I opted for the apple and orange breakfast?

I spoke to (truthfully) one of the number one distance runners in the world all his life last night. He is a 4 time All American in college, represented his nation in 3 Olympics. He loved his pancakes.

Wasn't it also reported that the recruiting service terminated the employment of the agent in question prior to the completion of his work for Oregon. And that he took it upon himself to bill Oregon, which they promptly paid. To him, not the service, I believe was what the report said.

Apples and oranges.

Dunbar was ruled a "booster" by the NCAA on the basis of the $25 mailing list fee for The Quarterback Club. The loss of scholarships was due to extra benefits to student athletes provided by a booster. It was a tenuous connection. Dunbar was a serial groupie that gave presents (video camera, watch, etc) to her athlete boy friend of the year.

As a consequence of that case anyone donating funds to a school or buying a ticket comes under the "booster" role.

When Demetrious Dubose left home to attend ND, a family friend gave him a winter coat for South Bend winter's. When the ND coaches learned that the family friend was an ND alumnus they reported it to the NCAA. Dubs was given a one game suspension for an extra benefit from a booster.

It wasn't apples or oranges, it was $25 that could be tracked. It took a while to build. Maybe a better example for you is Clemson, when Danny Ford coached in the 70's. Program came out of nowhere to NC status. Took awhile, but they tore it apart. Started with one little transaction that wasn't wiped out quickly enough . . . and I had Jello for breakfast, just recovering from the flu and a sinus infection. Wanted to shoot myself, in the foot. I was convinced the pain would be less.

No, NCAA regs specify that only 9 position coaches and the head coach can recruit. They have to take a written test and be certified by the NCAA.

Under Holtz, Vinny Cerrato was a full time recruiter. The NCAA changed their regs in the early 1990's eliminating the possibility of a recruiting specialist by limiting recruiting to the field coaches only. Longo is on Kelly's coaching staff but can not recruit. "Recruiting" is defined by the NCAA regs and specifies the type of contact that can be made with a recruit.

Thanks for clearing it up. Didn't know ND had an issue in the early 90's with that. Still a little too young to remember.

Limited engagement. Too funny. Some neighbors and I were sitting watching TV (really exciting night) and we were talking about Bambi. Then the commercial comes on 10 seconds later about the re-release of Bambi.

Disney keeps that movie very protected. My neighbor lady said it may have been too disturbing for kids when my mommy died. I seem to think the movie was changed when I first saw it at about 6 years old, and again on youtube about a year ago. Mommy death scene was different.

Oops. Hope I didn't ruin the movie for anyone who has not watched it...

How funny . . . last night I was laying on my couch, (still about half-dead) with my eight-year old daughter and five-year old son, and Bambi came up, while we were watching another older Disney movie. Just after I told them they might not want to watch Bambi because Mom gets it, the loveable character in that movie we were watching was murdered. My daughter turned to me and said, "What's the matter with those people at Disney? All this senseless killing! It is just absolutely unnecessary! There is something wrong with those people!" And my five-year old turns away from the screen in disgust and chimes in with, "And you won't let me play Call To Duty!" I'm there bro!

But here is my question, (to switch from deer to duck): When the mother of a recruit states that she thought an individual was a representative of a university, and there is a record of the very University making him a payment, why aren't the big guns being trained on that program?

Oregon uses a recruiting service and ends up paying the guy $25,000.

Auburn probably paid off Cam Newton's father for his services. Going rate may have been over $100,000. Cam is suspended for one day and reinstated because he did not know about his dad soliciting money for his play.

You really think this thing with Oregon is going anywhere? If it does, the pattern is that the Pac-10 gets crapped on while the SEC gets free rides.

The SEC will burn again. They are loose cannons down there trying to stay competitive. tOSU destroying (21 point halftime lead squandered to a 5 point win) Arkansas changed my mind about the SEC. Smoke and mirrors.

Oregon will be alright.

From SEC bylaws:
"If at any time before or after matriculation in a member institution a student-athlete or any member of his/her family receives or agrees to receive, directly or indirectly, any aid or assistance beyond or in addition to that permitted by the Bylaws of this Conference (except such aid or assistance as such student-athlete may receive from those persons on whom the student is naturally or legally dependent for support), such student-athlete shall be ineligible for competition in any intercollegiate sport within the Conference for the remainder of his/her college career." (Underlining mine)

In the SEC, rules are made to be broken.

Oregon complying with NCAA request - CBSSports.com

Following a report on Thursday that Oregon had paid nearly $30,000 to two different scouting services, including $25,000 to Will Lyles, the NCAA requested documents from the school related to the services acquired. On Friday evening, the school released a statement saying it would compy with the NCAA's request.

....

Of course, what the NCAA is interested in is the purpose of the money the school paid Lyles, not the practice of using recruiting services. Schools use them all the time to help find talent that may have slipped beneath the radar, but the NCAA is more interested in the role Lyles may have played in bringing running back Lache Seastrunk to Oregon.
