It's crazy because he's making $600k+ at Ohio State. You have to think he knows he's on his way out or something for these discussions to even be happening. There is no way that ND would consider paying that much for an assistant coach even if they were a world beater.

I'm with everyone else in that I'd hate to see Luke come in and jump all of the incumbents into the DC chair (and I hate to think what it would do to the staff dynamics), but I'd be perfectly OK with him as a LB coach, and if he needs the "co-DC" title to save face on the move then so be it.

On a side note: this guy's wife sounds like a peach, huh?

We all take family considerations into account when moving, don't we?

This would be an excellent hire. He's been Co-DC since 2005 and under Tressel their defenses were very good. Maybe Meyer has something to do with their defense failings the last two years. According to TJ assistant pay was greatly enhanced after last season which is why Elston prefers to be at ND as opposed to being DC at UConn. They will pay Fickell if he's the guy Kelly wants.

I think the frying pan is getting a little to hot for him.

I had forgotten this, but evidently Charlie had offered him a spot on the defensive staff back in January 2009. Evidently Fickell was interested enough that he went to South Bend to check things out. Maybe he's a closet ND fan.

If they hire him, he's the right hire,... if they don't, he's not...

pretty easy for me.

:)

We're still not paying anything close to $600k for a coordinator though.

He recruited Mcmillan, Hooker, Booker, Berger, Hubbard, Thompson and Trout, in some cases along with other assistant.

A) His wife sounds down right terrible.

B) He's been either the primary or at one time was the primary recruiter for 5 of OSU's 4:s: & 5:s: recruits with another 2 3:s:.

C) He has stout defenses before Urbie got there.

I like it in either capacity. We've been clamoring for our coaches to be more 'hype' and excited on the sidelines and in practice. I think Luke can bring this along. Sign me up.

Yeah, sure. But if he wants to be a head coach and his wife made him turn it down because her lifestyle couldn't function on the salary he would have made, that is not something I could handle. It's not like FAU pays their HC 15K per year.

+1

I think he would be a great hire either way.

And to clarify my previous post, the recruits I was referring to is from this year only. It doesn't take into account other seasons.

You dont go from Bobby The Hair to a guy who embraces a faux hawk -- too much change, system overload

I don't get how he represents experience against multiple offenses. Is the Big 10 pretty diverse?

I'm in the camp that thinks Kelly won't make a stupid hire.

Ohio state's tackling has been awful in every game I've seen. their defense was abused as badly as ours by Michigan and they've given up plenty of points. the difference is that their offense was good enough to win shootouts

If we are going to judge the guy off of two seasons with Urban, then are we going to give him credit for the other 6 years where he coached an excellent defense and won Assistant Coach of The Year (2010)?

Seems only fair...

Agreed. I'm not saying that I even approve him as DC but when he took over for Tressell he built quite a following in Columbus. Now no following that will stand up to getting Urban Meyer as HC but like Buster said he garnered quite a lot of support after all the baggage left.

I spent some time over at Elevenwarriors seeing what they had to say about Fickell and the defense situation. This thread was the most recent that I found.
11W Staff's Take on Coaching Situation | Eleven Warriors

Bottom line is most seem to think Urban was "forced" to retain Fickell when he was hired. They believe that there is a major "disconnect" on the defensive side of the ball as it pertains to assistant coaches and that someone needs to go. They aren't all rowing in the same direction. Most seem to be speculating it's an issue between Fickell and Withers

Here is a quote from one of the "staff" guys at 11W

I was told that Luke Fickell makes the calls and that there was some coaches not on the same page. I took it as there was some differing philosophies. The performance reviews seemed to confirm the disconnect on the defensive staff. Since it was on Fickell's review, I'm going to speculate the disconnect was between Fickell and Withers and/or Coombs. I'm going to assume that Fickell and Vrabel are on the same page.

What if we could get a package deal with Fickell and Vrabel? from the way way outside looking in it apears they're buddies. Fickell as a Co DC and Vrabel as a pure linebacker coach? Im down.
