Anybody else think it is a bit strange the situation with Randolph? Kelly (paraphrasing) said it was due to a pre-existing condition and they went ahead and did the surgery now, but, alas, he's out for the year. I wonder if the staff and/or Randolph knew about it 1, 2, 5, or 7 months ago? If so, why not preform the surgery then? Why wait until the eve of the season to do the surgery? Perhaps they did know and were trying to avoid surgery through rehab but didn't succeed? I'm not claiming some conspiracy...just found it kinda strange.
Also, I'm no Orthopedist, but ND has now lost at least 4 guys for the season the past 2 seasons due to shoulder injuries in the offseason (at least 3 of which due to labrums). I know it's particularly tough to get medical info on college players, but in the pros, it's a different story-- we are able to get all kinds of medical information about players. Does this seem high? I could be wrong, but I don't seem to recall hearing about many guys in the pros missing an entire season with shoulder problems...particularly when they occur in the offseason. I have heard, though, about shoulder, chest, and arm injuries occurring to some players and them playing through it, or postponing surgery until the offseason. Is what happened at ND just bad luck or coincidental? Is BK just being protective of his kids (not necessarily a bad thing)?
A quick search online of "pro football players torn labrums" brought up results of Jared Allen, Aldon Smith, Blaine Gabbert, Dion Jordan, and even Percy Harvin (hip labrum). These guys seemed to have waited to have surgery or seem to be coming back sooner than Collinsworth and Hounshell. Again, I don't know a ton about the human shoulder, but I guess what I'm asking is-- is what is going on at ND with the shoulder injuries typical of other programs?
