Awesome thread!
Kiffin. He is an ace recruiter, he will get you talent. He has incredibly high upside... the question is whether you roll the dice that he's learned management skills from Saban. I'd take that risk.
Les Miles flat out can't coach from a scheme standpoint. Look at how Ed O is doing with his players at the moment. I'd only take miles if I was a Tier 4 program like a Purdue or Illinois or Wake Forest.
I'm taking Lane Kiffin.
He's a tremendous recruiter, and I'm sure he's learned plenty from Saban, such as how to build a good coaching staff (rather than a *recruiting* staff), and also how to operate things on a day-to-day.
USC was a train-wreck under his watch; Tennessee too. But I'd bet with his time at Bama, he wouldn't be half bad if he were put in charge somewhere.
We know Les can recruit with the best of them, and that he's going to put a good staff in place, but his time as an offensive genius is in the past, whereas Kiffin continues to transform Bama's offense into a force.
I'd rather take a chance on the guy that's been learning under Saban through a dynasty who is also still young.
Wonder Boy gets a bad rap for how he left Tenn and not how he actually had taken over a dumpster fire and appeared to have the Vols headed in the right direction. I dismiss his time at USC as he was the recipient of Sneaky Pete and Reggie Bush's antics while the Trojan coach.
Miles has been successful at the highest levels and has a natty to show for it. But... I think the game is slipping past him.
I would roll the dice with Wonder Boy... shortly after I put my house on the market and cleaned up my resume. It's all or nothing.
I'd choose Miles because the other choice is Kiffin. This reminds me of the presidential race ... no good choices!
Miles is a guaranteed B+. Kiffin could be an A+ or a D. He's the riskier choice, but has a potentially huge upside if he's finally grown up and learned from Saban. Miles, I think, is just past his prime and never gonna be a guy who can take you to the top again, but can build a solid program and stock it with talent (though how much remains to be seen when he's not sitting in the middle of a talent hotbed like Louisiana).
