If you were a major program AD and had to choose between hiring Lane Kiffin or Les Miles as your next head coach, who would you choose and why?

These two names are the ones floating on ESPN today and my workplace is divided. GO!

I'm taking Lane Kiffin.

He's a tremendous recruiter, and I'm sure he's learned plenty from Saban, such as how to build a good coaching staff (rather than a *recruiting* staff), and also how to operate things on a day-to-day.

USC was a train-wreck under his watch; Tennessee too. But I'd bet with his time at Bama, he wouldn't be half bad if he were put in charge somewhere.

We know Les can recruit with the best of them, and that he's going to put a good staff in place, but his time as an offensive genius is in the past, whereas Kiffin continues to transform Bama's offense into a force.

I'd rather take a chance on the guy that's been learning under Saban through a dynasty who is also still young.

Miles. He's proven. Lane Kiffin is kinda like hillary...his only real experience has been at failing.

Kiffen just no way. Here is a bozo with zero character. I can not see him sitting there with a ND hat on, a school of high integrity and character, and talking about why a kid should come to ND. That is the height of hypocrisy.

Miles on the other hand screams low IQ every time he opens his mouth in a public setting. How do you talk about ND's higher education lure to recruits when its head coach talks like Les Miles????

Gotta go with option #3.

I went Kiffin on the hopes he has improved from his days of sucking under mighty Saban. I think he is a capable OC, something Les is not. He can't suck forever.

I voted Les (assuming he can bring along a good OC), but Lame gets bonus points for Layla.

Les is solid, Lame is a great recruiter, decent OC, but blows elephants as a leader.

Awesome thread!

Kiffin. He is an ace recruiter, he will get you talent. He has incredibly high upside... the question is whether you roll the dice that he's learned management skills from Saban. I'd take that risk.

Les Miles flat out can't coach from a scheme standpoint. Look at how Ed O is doing with his players at the moment. I'd only take miles if I was a Tier 4 program like a Purdue or Illinois or Wake Forest.

Miles has titles. Kiffin has proven time and time again, that he can't run a program.

Nuff said.

I'd take Kitten if I knew he'd learned his lessons, and was no longer a complete tool. I just don't believe he's any better of a person. He probably has learned a little self restraint under Satan, but I think the old Lame will show up as soon as Satan's gag is no longer around his mouth.

I'd choose Miles because the other choice is Kiffin. This reminds me of the presidential race ... no good choices!

This is a tough choice.
I actually like Les Miles. I think he's a good coach. He's been to the mountaintop.
But Kiffin is a tremendous recruiter and is a lot younger, which matters if you're building a program long-term.
So I don't know. But I do know I'd call Nick Saban for advice.

Id like to see Les Miles at FIU, bringing in uber-athletic teams to somehow snatch defeat from the jaws of victory on a weekly basis. Id like to see Lane Kiffen at whoever bids higher UNLV or Arizona (Joey Freshwater Returns)

For me, though,

I'll take Kiffin. He had to learn something from Saban on how to run a program and he doesn't need any help on the offensive side of the ball. Maybe he could poach a good defensive mind from Sabans staff to be his DC.

Choke me, please. Kelly would have been an interesting 4th choice.

If I had to choose between Kiffin and Miles, it's Miles for sure. Miles seems intent on coaching at a program again, and he says he's going to be more offensive conscious...looking at teams like Baylor and other high tempo offenses for inspiration. I can't believe I'm even seeing this thread though...having to choose between a Michigan Man and a longtime Trojan coach/assistant. That's a lose/lose situation, especially when it comes to Kiffin. There's absolutely no evidence that he's suddenly going to be a great head coach after working with Saban a few years. I mean, Kirby Smart is 4-4 at Georgia this year....and was DANGEROUSLY close to 2-6...yeah, you coach with Saban, you become a head coaching guru. While there's a few guys that landed on their feet and did alright, there's plenty of other assistants that haven't translated to great HCs after working with Saban.

Wonder Boy gets a bad rap for how he left Tenn and not how he actually had taken over a dumpster fire and appeared to have the Vols headed in the right direction. I dismiss his time at USC as he was the recipient of Sneaky Pete and Reggie Bush's antics while the Trojan coach.

Miles has been successful at the highest levels and has a natty to show for it. But... I think the game is slipping past him.

I would roll the dice with Wonder Boy... shortly after I put my house on the market and cleaned up my resume. It's all or nothing.

I take kiffin. At least he can drum up offense. Miles offenses and time management drive me nuts. Like others have said Kiffin can recruit well and his ability to create offense is good enough for me. The only question is could he make a good decision to hire a good d-cord.

Has Kiffin really learned or is he excelling because he's under the direction of that Saban guy? Remember, Leopards don't change their spots.

Kiffin every time. I agree with Triple T, Kiffin's exit from TN was really, really bad; but his time there he had them moving in a good direction. He improved their record in his first year and the recruiter was rolling along too.

I just don't think Les is as good of a coach as his record indicates. I know it's difficult to look at his wins and titles and think that guy isn't a great coach, but ultimately I think the talent he had available to him made him the success that he was. I actually think he should have won a LOT more than he did.

Kiffin always looks like a smug teenage prick on trial for some horrible crime the general public knows he committed, but will get away with because he lives in Beverly Hills.

Miles is a guaranteed B+. Kiffin could be an A+ or a D. He's the riskier choice, but has a potentially huge upside if he's finally grown up and learned from Saban. Miles, I think, is just past his prime and never gonna be a guy who can take you to the top again, but can build a solid program and stock it with talent (though how much remains to be seen when he's not sitting in the middle of a talent hotbed like Louisiana).

No thanks on Kiffin. Dumb bitch couldn't lead a camel to water. He's a literal example of the Peter Principle. Has Webster asked to put him in the dictionary? He has a niche. That's what he is good at. I've met 6 year olds with more charisma that that clown.
