We definitely needed a third Cap movie more than a 4th Iron Man movie.

I agree with you... I just don't think the movie worked out quite that way.

I might concede that "Civil War" AT BEST was Iron Man 3.5/Captain 2.5

But Civil War itself focuses more on the collision course between Tony Stark and Bucky Barnes than it does Steve Rogers. Steve Rogers is the reason they ultimately connect, but the plot itself is driven by the impending conflict between Stark and Barnes. The "Sakovia Accords" are essentially relegated to "background setup" by the third act of the movie, and did nothing more than give Cap a moral ground to stand on.

I don't think "moral ground" was enough to overthrow the major plot points revolving around Stark. Hell, even Roadie getting shot down by Vision affected Stark more than anyone. The big "oh shit, even the good guys are at risk" moment was meant to affect Stark, not Rogers.

2. Guardians of the Galaxy
3. Iron Man
4. Thor: Ragnarok
5. Captain America: Civil War
6. The Avengers
7. Spider-Man: Homecoming
8. Captain America: The Winter Soldier
9. Doctor Strange
10. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
11. Iron Man 3
12. Captain America: The First Avenger
13. Ant-Man
14. Iron Man 2
15. Thor
16. The Incredible Hulk
17. Avengers: Age of Ultron
18. Thor: The Dark World

I'd shift some things around, personally.

My top 5:
1. Iron Man
2. Black Panther
3. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
4a. Captain America: The Winter Soldier
4b. Captain America: Civil War
5. Guardians of the Galaxy

Haven't seen "Ragnarok" yet, so maybe that would break into the top 5 for me, as I'd have the original "Thor" rated much higher than 15.

Haha. Esquire ranking the winter soldier 8th shows they don’t know WTF they’re talking about.

Also, I still think it should've been "Iron Man: Civil War"

Captain had the noble intentions that drew the focus, following up on the ideas from "Winter Soldier" with his characterization, but the plot impacted Tony Stark more, and drew greater impact FROM Tony Stark.
Avengers: Civil War

IMO

Avengers: Civil War

IMO

This is good, too.

I watched Civil War on Netflix the other day and was like, "damn, I wish Banner and Thor were here for this."

But I've heard Ragnarok is totally worth their absence, so I'll have to wait for Ragnarok on blu-ray to judge for myself.

Haven't seen "Ragnarok" yet, so maybe that would break into the top 5 for me, as I'd have the original "Thor" rated much higher than 15.

With the number of movies they have now and the diversity of plots and approaches to the films. I cannot put together an out and out list of 1-18 of my ranking. I know my favorite is still Captain America: The Winter Soldier. But GotG vol. 1 is right up there as it had the most fun (haven't seen Thor: Ragnarok yet which still pi$$es me off, but will see it soon). Black Panther is right up there with them as it did a fantastic job of creating its own new world like GotG did and one of the things the Thor movies didn't really achieve (Asgard not really fleshed out, more just the generic shining city on the hill). Black Panther may also be one of the best acted Marvel movies. My biggest problem is that Black Panther himself seems kind of diminished for large portions of the movie so that a number of other characters can be fleshed out. Killmonger one of the best villains, mostly because he seemingly has a basis in reality and doesn't think he is evil or trying to take over the world for power's sake.

Of the Marvel movies, the ones on my lowest group are Iron Man 2, Thor: The Dark World, The Incredible Hulk, and Ultron. But each of these still has redeeming qualities.

...and not to start and MCU vs DCEU rivalries, but I would throw WW in there with the top MCU ones I listed, not due to the identity politics of female superhero, but because it was fleshed out well and you cared for the characters while doing very little to serve as connecting tissue for the overall universe. I think all the best movies from each universe are the ones that do this. I would put Man of Steel just below that top category. Justice League is basically a video game walkthrough sequence with some moments. However, BvS and Suicide Squad are just dreck to me

Watched Black Panther over the past weekend. It's very good and I definitely enjoyed it, but it's not this epic masterpiece that the media is hyping it up to be. It's got some great special effects, and some that aren't so good. Mostly good action scenes, a good villain who unfortunately isn't around for a good chunk of the movie, good acting. What humor it did have didn't work for me, especially one very annoying line that is referencing a 3 year old meme. I'll avoid discussing spoilers but there some questionable decisions made by the writer/director as well. All in all I thoroughly enjoyed it, but I still wouldn't put it above the Winter Soldier, Civil War, Iron Man, GOTG, or Ragnarok.

I agree with you on some of your points and it has something that I really don't like but see a lot of in movies, cgi fights at night or in places where its dark. This is a cheat a lot of films use so that the darkness helps to hide some of fine detail.

While I also liked a lot about Wonder Woman, I think it and Black Panther have also benefited from the cultural phenomenon aspect. Because identity-wise they are firsts (-ish), there is a bit of extra hype around them. This is fine, but needs to be taken into account by the viewer before viewing. By the way, this is not just true of identity films. Many films have come out over the years that get hyped to high heaven because of one aspect or another, but when an individual buys too much into that prior to viewing, all the extra hype can make even good movies feel like a disappointment if they didn't hit the pinnacle you were expecting.

There really is something going on with Black Panther as a culture phenom. I saw it when I went to sent it. Many people and multiple generations together. Many people taking photos of themselves with cutouts in the lobby. Much pride and enthusiasm was obvious. Anyway. This is really cool.

Black Panther was good, but as with every Marvel movie, overhyped. I'm not sure it was any better than Ragnarok, but still very enjoyable. Honestly, it got me kinda hyped for Infinity War, which is a feat in itself

Black Panther was mediocre. Don't get all the hype at all.

So is the guy indestructible as long as he is in his suit and juiced? Did they think "this time I'm going to hit him extra hard and his suit will fail" it just seems like a bar brawl with no end. There wasn't much rhyme or reason to what rang his bell or didn't.

Why exactly do they exclude the rest of their warriors from the juice? Does he need to keep consuming to re-up his strength periodically or is it just an easy permanent cheat code? Such a valuable resource has no back up site?

Don't believe someone raised to take the throne would throw away their secret society so quickly and be such a puss about protecting it at all costs. Plus, really, in all those years they never had a bad apple King? And why do you need to stockpile so many weapons if you are never fighting? A deterrent only works if known by your enemies and they live in secrecy sooooo why the obsession with such mass production of overpowering weapons?

But yeah, the virtually all black cast for a big budget blockbuster was OMG totally amazing! Visuals were amazing, well done overall - didn't mind the direction they were going but in the scope of Marvel it is lower half in my book - even though I really like the concept of the character and "world". Too indestructible to start - have more weakness and build a stronger character over time. Absolutely hate the secret potions for too easy of on/off button - it would be like "anybody can be Spider-Man, just drink this" - doesn't work for me.

This is kind of an issue for me with most super heroes... at the end of the day they're...... super heroes. Hard for me to invest myself... it's why only a select few, Batman, Ironman, those types, ever appealed to me.

Watched 'Thor: Ragnarok' last night. Picked it up while I was on my way home from work.

Hooooooo boy. That was a good movie. Very funny and entertaining. Most of the laughs were legit LOL funny, and not just "chuckle because a superhero made a joke" funny.

I was also pleased to see that a lot of the "dark intrigue" and action from the previews came from the first 5 minutes of the film... they saved the good stuff for the movie itself.

I wish they would have had a way to minimize the Hulk's inclusion during marketing, that way the Hulk's character had more impact in the film. His one-liners and Hulkisms would've been hysterical had it been mostly unexpected. They had to market Ruffalo, I know, but they could have subverted people's expectations for his role in the film. It would have been an amazing moment to find out that the Champion on the lost planet was Hulk without having known it from the previews.

Cate Blanchett looked dead-on Claire Underwood/Robin Wright in this movie. I thought her character was cool, but I wish they would have a drawn out the hand-to-hand combat between her and Thor a bit more.

Just waiting to see if Loki stole the Tesseract while he was in the vault getting the Ragnarok Crown, and how he uses it to betray the Asgardian survivors on the way to Earth and Infinity War.

And who's on the big ship that showed up mid-credits? Is it Thanos? Is that how he gets the Space Stone for the Infinity Gauntlet?

My guess is that Loki took the Tesseract, let Thanos know that he had it and that he was on an escape ship if he wanted to come get it, in exchange for limitless power in the new universe or some such nonsense. Thanos shows up, takes the Space Stone from the Tesseract, puts it in the Infinity Gauntlet, and then fights Thor, as Thor buys time for Heimdall to escape with Asgard's survivors.

Thanos knocks Thor out and leaves him for dead, then heads off for Earth with the Infinity Gauntlet. The Guardians of the Galaxy know Thanos is on his way to something big, so they're following him, and show up at the scene of the battle just after Thanos leaves, thus recovering Thor's body.

I loved Thor Ragnarok. I have very little criticisms but my big one is how when Odin dies, there was like 20-seconds of grieving and then its over.

I didn't like that Thor just kind of brushed off Loki's part in Odin's demise, even later in the film when they had time to reflect. The conversation at the end when Loki decides to "help" should have been a little more difficult for both of them than it was.

Things I didn't mention in my OP: Thor with Stephen Strange was hilarious. The only other Marvel films to make me laugh so deeply were GOTG/GOTG2.

Heimdall didn't get quite enough shine as the city's savior.

Korg was perfect.

Matt Damon as an Asgardian actor was also hilarious.

Jeff Goldblum's standard oddness worked perfectly as the Grandmaster.

"The Sun's gettin' real low" followed by maniacal fake-smiling from Thor had me dying.

If you didn't notice, while Damon played actor Loki, Sam Neill (Jurassic Park, Hunt for Red October, etc) played actor Odin.

I look forward to the Korg and Miek stand alone film...no reason to bring new Doug back into things

I saw part of one Thor movie where everyone just stood around on some spaceship talking for like 30 minutes... it was the worst thing I've ever seen...

Meh

The suit was cool, but everyone's suit is cool these days. The beginning of the film when he was stalking the kidnappers (or whatever they were) was awesome, but as soon as we actually saw their world, I was disappointed. It was probably all the hype. The fight with the rhinos was absurd.
I really didn't like the main antagonist or his plight. People comparing MB Jordan's Killmonger to Ledger's Joker is laughable.

That's Marvel's biggest flaw. They have to justify every villain's actions. Why can't they just be bad guys?

That is what makes Marvel unique in my opinion. All the characters are ambiguously heroic or villainous. There are very few purely heroic like Superman or purely evil like Joker in the Marvel Universe. Most marvel characters are anti-heroes.

Its widely accepted, fr Me what I have read and watched, that Killmonger is the most completely developed villain in the MCU to date, minus Loki. All other villains are relatively bland with the Yellow jacket and Malakith being the worst IMO.

At some point, can you ever have too many super heroes in a movie?

IDK. I enjoy these types of movies, but strictly microwave popcorn to me once it comes to cable or Kodi...

Scarlett and Zoe make it worth a watch regardless....
