Alright nerds, who saw Black Panther over opening weekend?
Saw it on Friday, thought it was amazing after a bit of a slow start.
Very mild spoilers to follow:
They packed a lot in without making it feel overwhelming, and the story flowed nicely from point-to-point. The political messaging didn't seem forced or bothersome at all, and fit the narrative well in terms of Killmonger's backstory and how it connected him to his beliefs about the world at large... he had legit motivation that was understandable, though misguided. Really well-executed villain.
I had a few minor nits to pick with some characterization and decision-making, but less than in a usual Marvel film, I think.
Both post-credit scenes were huge in terms of setting up the future of the universe, which was cool.
- Chadwick Boseman was really good.
- Michael B. Jordan was outstanding, as usual.
- Letitia Wright nailed it as Shuri.
- Danai Gurira as Okoye was perfect casting for "badass general/royal bodyguard"
- Martin Freeman's American accent has improved greatly since Civil War.
- Andy Serkis is fucking yoked.
I think T'Challa's boy, W'Kabi, sets up as a really interesting/potential future bad guy, and M'Baku stole the show in limited screen time. There weren't really any over-inflated characters or wasted focus, which was great.
Black Panther is definitely now my clubhouse leader in terms of his suit and technology, too. Having a supergenius sister doing experiments and perfecting vibranium tech in a badass lab helps.
Can't wait for the "Infinity War" scene where Tony Stark intros some badass new tech, and Shuri just crushes his moment with something way better.
