How much do you pay for cable/internet?

It's been 3 months since I engaged in this conversation. Update:

Neighbor's house got struck by lightning and it fried our TV and X1 box. I said to my wife, "If there is ever a time to test Sling, it's now." She wouldn't budge. Instead went the next three days (this happened over a holiday weekend) w/o the cable box and no tv. She complained and I said, "If we had Sling, you could watch all of your shows on the upstairs tv that has the Apple TV." I got The Look.

Meanwhile, most of my friends have cut the cord (except for the guy who works for Comcast and gets free cable)....but not us.

I'm getting billed in two weeks by Sling for the month of June. The bill will be $55, and that includes the largest base package, the extra package, and their cloud DVR service. And I have access to literally everything I watched when I had DirecTV (got a $5 digital antenna to pick up crystal-clear HD local stations).

Keep fighting the good fight to switch to Sling.

Once you add in internet, isn't that about the same as a bundle from your local cable monopoly?

Saves me about $30, and no contracts/price increases to worry about. And once football rolls around, I can switch out the current extras for the sports extras.

May have already been answered in this thread, but what's the best way to upgrade your service without switching providers? Just call them up and threaten to quit?

I saw a commercial advertising Verizon Fios "gigabit" the other day including TV + HBO for $79/month. I currently pay over $130 for way shittier internet + TV from Verizon. The deal only applies to "new subscribers"...

Are you under contract? If so, you're SOL.

Has anyone used this or heard about it? They claim for $100 you can watch anything at anytime, with no subscriptions.

"All the apps we know are already pre-installed like you might know it from products like AppleTV, Amazon Firestick etc. But there is a main difference - it allows you to watch anything for free. With no subscriptions and completely legal."

Lol yeah, seems legit.

"You can even tune into live television 24/7 including virtually all the channels you get from your local cable company and hundreds more from all over the world. Everything Ultra HD of course."

If your BS meter wasn't already blaring, this should tip the scales. There are almost zero channels available in "regular" 1080p HD, let alone 4K Ultra HD.

More proof: they're on eBay for $15.

It sure feels like the days of being able to get a Kodi-like device or service that just gives you everything aren't too far off though.... I'm sure at that point internet service plans will go through the roof

Anybody else using Youtube TV?
I might make the switch today. They're now available on Xbox One and they include NESN in their base package in my zip code (Red Sox live games).

Roku, Chromecast, etc. all do that already. I run everything through my Xbox.

Not free of charge obviously. That would be highly illegal.

lol, that's what my post was referring to... "Kodi-like". I think that's coming fast where everything is reliable and more extensive.

To your Roku though, how much do you pay and do you truly get everything or just a basic cable like package.

I'd love to get all my Browns and Celtic games more easily.

I've been using Youtube TV for about 2 months now and I really like it.

Pros: it's amazing for CFB, has some original content, cloud DVR

Cons: limited device options, still missing some popular cable stations, have to "cast" everything from phone or tablet

For $35/month it's a great deal. I expect them to add more channels soon.

I pay $180 for high speed internet, DVR, HBO, 175 channels in 4 different rooms.

I'm still not tempted by Frankenstein-ing together packages to save me ~$70 bucks a month, worrying about streaming, log ins, devices working, paying multiple small bills, etc.

I like the convenience and flawless programming and customer service of my Xfinity package. There are ways to save ~$70 a month, but piecing together what's supposed to be a convenience isn't one of them for me.

Have fun with your Youtube Vue's or whatever you hipsters think is so cool.

What does that mean? Just that your phone is the remote?

Yeah. You have to press a button to send the show to the Chromecast. My biggest compliant is that after watching a show for awhile the "cast" button disappears. So I have to unplug the Chromecast, let it reset, then restart the YoutubeTV app, then change the channel.

That's annoying so I hope they do away with the "cast" feature.

That sounds like a limitation of the Chromecast device, not the YouTube TV service. I'll let you know how it works running on the Xbox One tonight, but I'd be very surprised if it doesn't let me navigate with my Xbox media remote.

Thats odd. I've never had to unplug my Chromecast. My only beef with mine is that it occasionally doesn't get along with my NBC Sports App.

Does that include your boxes/modem/router?

I invested in my own cable modem and router, plus TiVos so I only pay the cable company for their services.

Confirmed. No casting required on the Xbone. It just works like regular TV.

No, I rent everything from them. the router, modem, and boxes. that's one thing id consider, buying my own devices.

Part of the reason I did it was to also have a whole home DVR, that I couldn’t get through my local cable company.

Wasn’t cheap, but saves me $40+ a month going forward.

Moving out of our current house and out to the burbs on April 20th, and looking to make a change from Comcast to either Dish Network, or just high speed internet. Tired of my $185 comcast bill every month.

Can anyone give me an after tax/fee idea of what they pay for dish network with internet (I realize they provide internet through 3rd party).

Don't need the razzle dazzle packages, just give me the standard~120 channels in 3 different rooms and internet strong enough to work from home with.

Appreciate any input.

Just signed up for YouTube TV and dropped directv today. $130 a month down to $35 plus tax. Look into YouTube or other streaming service, they all have trial periods and no contracts so you can cancel anytime.
