Living in Portland using comcast, $100/month for 25mbps internet and HD tv with most channels, plus lots of free movies and TV shows. I thought that was expensive but judging from everyone's answers here maybe it's not.

I just got off the line with the combined billing rep from AT&T. They change my rate (increase) every month. Used to pay about $145 per month for land line unlimited U-verse, 15mbps U-verse internet, and 'Premium Package' from Direct TV.

Increased the internet to 25mbps, and they monkeyed around with the channels loading me up, over the last year.

As of this month (they said) they wanted about $300 per month. I called immediately to cancel all of my services.

Here is what I learned :

There are multiple packages of roughly the same channel selection over a broad range of prices. (Did I say that right?)

There are discounts and special pricing deals they sometimes refer to as promotions. I am not sure if I am using the right wording but you want a permanent monthly discount. Not these three, six-month, or year long promotions.

So here is what I ended up with. There is no minimum contract attached to any of this :

Unlimited land line - was $35 - is now $30
Internet (25mbps) - proposed $67 - is now $47*
Direct TV HiDef - proposed $177 - is now $95

This doesn't include taxes, but does include either three or four TV's. I have to figure that out. If I cut back one TV it may reduce the rate by $5.

The biggest savings was that I cut the Premier Package to another package with 'fewer audio channels.'

So. Did I get a deal? Part of the answer is, will they repeat that same rate month after month. Of course.

Increasing to the 45 or 50 mbps is an extra $10 per month.

Do you really need the land line? At my work we offer unlimited home phone for $9.99 after fees it is $16

Anyone use Sling TV or anything like it. I'm thinking about ditching cable soon. We are at about $180 a month including Internet. Live sports is mainly what I don't want to lose.

I use SlingTV. It's $20/mo and they just added the local Fox Sports Detroit channel so I can watch the Tigers (literally the only reason I kept cable around for as long as I did - because there was no way to watch them online (legally) before SlingTV added it to their channel lineup.)

So, internet is $50 per month for the top tier internet through Charter. $20 per month for SlingTV, $8 for HuluPlus, $8 for Netflix, $15 for HBOGo. Except we split accounts with three of our friends. I pay for the SlingTV, my one friend pays for the Netflix and Hulu, and another friend pays for the HBOGo. We all swapped login info so I have access to all of those programs but only pay for one of them.

Just got AT&T U-verse and Directv last night. I was paying ~$300 per month for Cell Phones (2 lines), home line, internet and full TV sub (HBO / Sports Package / Showtime / Starz / etc). With the new package and bundling thru AT&T, I will be paying ~$220 per month with the following changes:
- Removed my land line (did not use before)
- Upgraded cell plan for unlimited data
- Upgraded Internet speed from 30 to 45 mbps
- Upgraded resolution of cable feed to 1080i
- Free Sunday ticket for 2 years

Pretty good deal and I also like that I can pay all of this thru one account now too.

Just went through the annual battle with TWC after a contract expired. Went from paying $154/month to $142/month - all fees included.

Had to threaten to leave so many times I got pushed up the chain twice. First time I've ever made it that far - usually I only get pushed up once.

Pretty pleased at this point with my current pricing. This thread definitely helped.

I finally picked up my own modem, going to be dropping the old one off at TWC and get my $7/month bullshit fee removed.

Comcast cable and internet for 155 per month. The customer service sucks, but the actual service is reliable. I had Direct TV for about 3 months once and it seemed like every other day service was interrupted for some reason.

Had to fight like %$#@ to get my bill straight with att/direct/phone 132.00 per month, they tell you one thing then send whatever bill they want. Don't care for the selections on my plan. Can you say rip off. When contract is over so am I.

Just switched from Brighthouse to WOW down here in FL. Get this:

BH: 15mbps, single two channel dvr, NFL network, no premiums, $147/mo

WOW: 110mbps (tested at 90), two 6 channel dvrs (living room and bedroom), hd box for outside tv, premium channel of our choice with ability to swap whenever, NFL network, $125/mo.

I had called BH to give them shit because my internet sucked donkey balls, it was an expired plan. They agreed to upgrade us to 50mbps and a 6 channel dvr while dropping to $143/mo. I called WOW and leveraged that deal for my new WOW contract. Called BH back and gave them the middle finger.

Pretty pumped I can run a server with my new internet speed, but we'll see how things play out, seems too good to be true.

I pay $100 for Cox cable (200+ channels) and 50 mb internet.

I bought a TiVo bolt and 2 minis so I don't pay for their boxes every month, and my own modem and router as well.

I was paying over $200 for DirecTV (with comparable channels), ATT 21 mb internet, and a phone line.

Get this modem
Motorola / ARRIS SURFboard SB6141 8x4 DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem-Newegg.com

You can also find them on new egg bundled together with a good AC wireless router. Do you currently have a separate router, or would you need that, too?

Motorola / ARRIS is what I have. Good product.

After I bought the modem, I returned the other unit to Comcast. I go about a year and everything is fine. Then I get a letter in the mail from Comcast. An audit shows they haven't been charging me for a modem and my monthly billing is going up $10 a month. But due to the kindness of their hearts, they're not going to back charge me for the months they didn't bill. You wouldn't believe how swell that makes me feel.

I call Comcast and explain to them that I have my own modem and returned theirs about a year ago. They then ask for proof of purchase and a picture of the modem with make, model, serial number and MAC. Not happy that I have to prove something due to their inability to maintain accurate inventory records, I tell them to have a technician stop by and take a look or check with the office where I returned it. They can't do this and the office where I returned the unit is no longer opened. They are now getting the tone of my voice and decide to go ahead and mark my account as "owner owned modem". Three months go by and guess what? I receive another letter. I spend another 45-60 minutes of my life wasting my time as the rep thanks me for being a Comcast customer, checks my records, put me on hold, tells me they see where I had called in, will fix the problem and asks me if they handled my concerns in a satisfactory manner. I tell them I won't know for about three months. Three months pass and guess what comes again? Wash, rinse, repeat.

This has now happened four times. The last time I told the rep I wanted to speak to her supervisor. She asks why and I tell her I need to speak to her supervisor. She tells me she can't do that until she updates the records and reason for the call. I tell her and then she tells me she can fix the problem. I tell her she can't because I've been through this multiple times and to read my records. She then tells me her supervisor is on a call and I will have to wait. I tell her to transfer me to her supervisors manager. She tells me they are on the phone. I asks how she knows that because she hasn't even put me on hold to check. Finally get a supervisor who assures me this will be taken care of, but I need to supply a receipt for the purchase of my modem! At this point I'm livid and my staff is outside of my office just rolling. I finally convince the supervisor that I shouldn't have to do anything do to their incompetency. She tells me she will get with the auditing department and get this resolved.

I bet I get another letter in three months. Anyone want to wage some vbucks? lol

No router. If I buy these, I just want to make sure they're not going to obsolete in a year due to increasing interwebz speeds.

Is it worth it to get the combo gateway, or buy each independently?

I know 3.1 will be needed if you ever went to gig speeds

buy them separately. both are currently the best available speedwise and will be relevant for several years. I added the netgear router below, and then it showed me the option to add the modem I recommended for $12.60 extra, so that is heavily discounted.

I need phone, so I would have to buy a telephony modem. Because of this, I just use the Comcast modem and bought this Netgear router last year: NETGEAR Nighthawk Wireless Router R7000-100PAS Dual Band Gigabit AC1900-Newegg.com

I get 125Mbps+ download and 25Mbps+ upload over wifi through the router from the other side of the house.

I have been strongly considering canceling my cable and looking into an alternative provider/system. I really want to be able to keep the ability to watch all sports but I am tired too much.

Wondering who you guys use?
Do you miss cable?

I currently use Frontier which uses Verizion FIOS for TV and internet.

1. Get a Firestick and download Kodi. Everything free

2. Get an HD antenna for your SD/OC/LA channels it will pick up. OTA content will shock you in it's quantity. Then use your choice of Roku, Apple, Amazon, etc and order Sling with the package that includes all the Sports stations. I think that's $40.

Ok... I have had enough. I am now paying $220 a month and I'm getting ready to make my quarterly call to Comcast to negotiate a short term decrease that will eventually lead to me paying even more down the line. Before I do that... somebody help a brotha out and tell me how to get the following.

- High speed internet
- Local channels
- AMC, FX, HGTV and ESPN
- Game of Thrones. I don't give a shit about HBO as a whole, but gosh damn... I need this show.

I am willing to get a device like Roku. I'm willing to utilize Netflix, Amazon Prime and/or Hulu.
