Interesting to see what BVG does. I have no doubt the guy knows defense. He's not proven he can put together a modern college football D. Will he be able to learn from his mistakes, doubt it.

Mostly I love enthusiasm in Louisville....

"Our last image of VanGorder is of him being verbally assaulted by Brian Kelly on the sidelines as his Notre Dame defense once again failed to slow down anyone. On the flip side, he certainly has experience..."

Josh mcdaniels says nope to the colts

He was a terrible coach with the Broncos. Now gets a second chance and makes himself look stupid. Maybe other teams with See this and not interview him for awhile.

I don't know any of the details, but from the outside looking in I can't help but think that he has some sort of succession arrangement with NE. Can't help but think this latest move will have blacklisted him in some circles.

That's BK's job!

Hopefully it happens the same year Purdue wins the B1G West.

I just read that. The headline leaves things open for an interpretation of ill intent by Tate, but that's not the case.

Very interesting to read about Arizona's top dogs working with Tate to account for the team and their thoughts during the coaching search.

Coaches on the hot seat are already discussed - not to say those don't come out before the season starts.

Our Five: Power Five coaches who could be on the hot seat Oct 3, 2018
5. Bill Snyder, Kansas State (Buyout: $3 million): Snyder has had a really weird year. He’s reportedly feuding with his coaching staff over the team’s starting quarterback. Snyder wants Alex Delton. The coaching staff wants Skylar Thompson. Meanwhile, Kansas State has lost to Mississippi State, West Virginia and Texas. The 78-year-old coach is a Kansas State legend. But we’re wondering just how superfluous that contract extension he signed before the season actually is.

4. Paul Johnson, Georgia Tech (Buyout: $4 million): Georgia Tech needs to go 4-3 over the next seven games to avoid a third season under .500 since 2015. Combine the lack of success with Johnson’s paltry buyout and a fanbase that wants more and Georgia Tech could consider a coaching change if things don’t get better over the rest of the season.

3. Chris Ash, Rutgers (Buyout: $10 million): Rutgers has swiped the mantle of worst Power Five program in the country from Kansas. Or given how many turnovers Rutgers had against the Jayhawks, maybe Kansas stole something from Rutgers. The Big Ten experiment has been disastrous so far but does Rutgers want to make another coaching change? And, perhaps more importantly, does it want to pay eight figures to do so?

2. Larry Fedora, North Carolina (Buyout: $12 million): North Carolina’s 2017 performance can be reasonably explained away by injuries. This season included some suspensions but also some flat-out awful offensive performances. UNC is in search of a quarterback, lost to East Carolina and has been blown out at Miami. A loss to Central Florida seemed inevitable until that game was canceled because of Hurricane Florence. Like Ash, Fedora’s buyout could be too large for his employer to make a move.

1. Bobby Petrino, Louisville (Buyout: $14 million): Here’s another guy with a massive buyout whose team has been awful so far in 2018. Petrino’s second stint with the Cardinals has cratered now that he doesn’t have Lamar Jackson at quarterback. There are literally 119 offenses better than Louisville’s in college football. The more Louisville struggles, the more Cardinal fans will be clamoring for hometown hero Jeff Brohm. But will the school want to have turnover at football coach, basketball coach and athletic director in such a short period of time?

Also being discussed is Lovie Smith, HC at Illinois, who has a buyout of $6 million.

After their loss to Mississippi State, Auburn's Gus Malzahn, who reportedly has a buyout of $32 million, is probably safe due to the exorbitant cost. With a 3-2 record against FBS teams and 1-2 in the SEC conference with Georgia and Alabama to come.

IMO, KSU would be stupid to get rid of Snyder. They might not be good this year, but without him, they will hit rock bottom. I know a few KSU alums and he has god like status. I don't see them ever attaining Tier 1 status. Tier two is their ceiling, but they could easily be a T4 program without the player development Snyder brings.

Agree. Snyder retired a few years ago and waived any buyout and he may do that again to enjoy his retirement in the Little Apple or if he feels K-State can improve without him.

Auburn is notorious for whopping contract extensions after one good season and it's cost them a LOT of money over the past decade or so in buyouts when reality hits. I agree that Malzahn is probably safe due to his huge buyout, but boy, he sure isn't earning his pay right now. That offense is just awful.

I feel for Lovie. The B1G is just so hard to compete in as an Illinois (or Rutger, or Maryland...). I'm not sure what all he can do/what Illinois realistically expects from him.

I feel like there should be closed door talks with Snyder, asking him to step down to prevent a firing. He is a legend and built the program from being one of the worst in the nation, to being respected. However, Manhattan needs an injection bad.

.

I’ve never really understood why Illinois isn’t a stronger program. Good, big school, strong HS football in Chicago and STL’s Metro East. No real in-state competition for recruits, attention, etc. Nebraska and Wisconsin have better fan base and tradition but I’d probably put Illinois’ built-in advantages up against any program in the Big Ten West. And yet they suck, always.

I put a lot of the blame on OSU and Michigan in all reality. Let's face it, for 60+ years, the B1G was set up for the two of them. It just made it that much harder for anyone to break out in the conference. It's certainly, over the last ~20 years gotten better (bringing in PSU in the early 90s helped) for other teams.

I think the expansion of the B1G over the last few years has also hurt the likes of Minnesota, Illinois, and Purdue. Put too much competition at their level you know?

The guy came back out of love. They will crash again when he leaves.

Who's going to be the injection? It will never be T1 team, or location. And it's always going to be hard to recruit there. Snyder brought them from bottom T4 to T2 in some years. I don't see any coach of stature going there. They will have to dig deep on up an comers.

IMO, they should beg him to stay as long as he's able. If I were him, at his age, I'd want to retire. If I were them, I'd let his son Sean have a go with a short leash.

Yeah. Certainly Michigan and OSU long dominated the Big Ten, though that hasn’t stopped Wisconsin and Michigan State from building quality programs. Mostly I just look at all the good players who come out of Chicago (and to a lesser extent St. Louis) and wonder why Illinois doesn’t get more of them, or do more with the ones they do.

The in-state thing only works in certain cases where the state loves the flagship and/or there are few other options nearby. If you're a good player in Chicago, you've got Northwestern, ND, and Michigan (yes, I know...) nearby for academics. Arguably, you also have Wisconsin and Iowa. Then add Ohio State and MSU to the list of schools with football success where your parents can come see you combined with the fact that no one in your family gives one flying fuck about the illithings and you've got a sustainable recipe for keeping Illinois mediocre.

Auburn fans know the only way Gus is gone is if he gets caught in a $20 flop house motel room with Hugh Freeze, two hookers, and some blow. And they know that next year their defense will be below average and won’t be able to keep their offense in games. Our friends on the Plains have settled in for the inevitable.

He's not a head coach, but there's no longer a Stoops coaching at Oklahoma

Mike Stoops out as Oklahoma defensive coordinator

Since it was discussed in this thread recently about Lovie Smith and Illinois... I found this tweet quote on CBS Sports today, which is certainly a positive note for that program. Looking at the remaining schedule, I could see Illinois going bowling:

Illinois rushing stats

2018: 1,304 yards, 242 attempts, 5.6 yds/carry, 260.8 yds/game, 11 touchdowns (5 games)

2017: 1,267 yards, 386 attempts, 3.3 yds/carry, 105.6 yds/game, 11 touchdowns (12 games)

I get they had it rough the first two years but if they win 6 plus games (pretty sure they will) I don't know how you don't give Lovie more time....

Yeah, I mean after Juice Williams left it's just been not good for that program. They deserve some stability, and Lovie is a coach that knows the game well. I think he is a surprise college fit if they give him time.

He's a good guy. IL is lucky to have him.
Nobody would have turned them around in under 5 years.
IMO, IL will never be a T1 program, and will be lucky to attain T2 status on its better years.
