Dodd should have given an A+ grade to Alabama and Saban.

The 4 hires in the SEC West and 2 in the East for the most part are lesser hires than the men fired.

Jimbo might be the only upgrade. McElwain had back to back divisional titles.

Hard to give Sumlin an F. He got a $10 million buyout. Time to take a year off, recharge the batteries and figure out where to coach next year. I'd give that a solid B+ at least.

Oregon's coaching transition through the recruiting cycle

Oregon's coaching transition through the recruiting cycle

Willie Taggert was set to earn $3 million per year. He left an extension on the table of a new five-year, $20 million deal and accepted a six-year, $30 million contract to coach Florida State. Florida State will pay Taggart’s $3 million buyout at Oregon - plus $1.37 million from his buyout at South Florida. After Taggart left, five four star recruits decommitted - athletes Braden Lenzy and Tre’Shaun Harrison, wide receivers Miles Battle and Warren Thompson and cornerback Isaiah Bolden.

Oregon promoted from within, signing new head coach Mario Cristobal to a five-year, $12.5 million contract with an annual base salary of $2.5 million. Then, they addressed retention of their assistant coaches. Seventy football players signed a petition urging the Athletic department to promote Cristobal.

DC Coordinator, Jim Leavitt, who made $1.15 million during his first year at Oregon signed a four-year extension with an annual base salary of $1.7 million, making him the second-highest paid assistant at the FBS level. Offensive coordinator Marcus Arroyo and defensive line coach Joe Salave’a also signed contract extensions. Arroyo, who made $300,000 in his first year at Oregon gets a $450,000 pay raise and will make $750,000 in 2018, $825,000 in 2019 and $850,000 in 2021. Salave’a, who made $555,000 during his first season at Oregon, will have a $650,000 base salary over the next three years. Each have buyouts, but they would be waived if Arroyo or Salave’a becomes an FBS head coach or defensive coordinator.

That continuity of coaches paid bonuses as recruiting came down to the early signing period. Oregon scrambled to cement commitments from recruits and to obtain new verbals. Oregon's 2018 Class is ranked thirteenth nationally with 9 four star recruits and 10 three stars. ND's Class has ten four stars, and ten three stars. If they had retained those five four stars that decommitted after Taggart left.....

The hole in their class is at WR where Lenzy, Harrison, Battle and Thompson were all to play. But, for WR, Oregon currently is the favorite of Devon Williams (#4 nationally), in the top 2 for Jalen Hall (#13) and is the favorite to regain a commitment from Tre'Shaun Harrison (#6 Ath) - all four stars.

Jim Leavitt recently tweeted:
“Just another day in paradise! I am so fortunate to be able to coach for the Ducks! Been recruiting all night so first chance to say Thanks!”

Continuity pays off for the Ducks.

I wonder how those that signed up in December feel now? I notice there were very few with any high scores.

Banging or trying to bang subordinates is never a good look in any industry.

While I’m not a Rich Rod fan, this is shameful in my view. An allegation that went unsubstantiated and the accusing person refused to cooperate with the investigating law firm. This sounds like, "Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned". I could be wrong but an allegation shouldn't lead to a firing.

That's where we're at in society now. The mere accusation, no matter how far fetched or unsubstantiated, gets you canned.

They hired a law firm to investigate the accusation internally before making a decision. This doesn't sound like an overreaction by the school or an unsubstantiated or far fetched accusation. It sounds like it was handled appropriately. They even made it clear he was not being fired for those allegations specifically, but something else they found in their internal investigation.

If anything, the fact that the woman wouldn't cooperate with the internal law firm and the university fired him - and ate his massive buyout - anyway, suggests that they found some pretty damaging stuff in their investigation.

I think this pretty much sums it up.

Is that a reasonable excuse for a firing? Honest question from a college student. If the extra marital affair is a college student (petino) then thats an easy answer obviously. But of it's with a person not affiliated with the school and he is handling it internally (within his family) is it really a reason to fire the person? Just wondering.

IMO, in a normal circumstance, no. For a public figure, no cause seems reasonable but obviously not very popular.

I always look at decisions like this to only be half the truth. They're saying all they need to, with agreement from Rich Rod. Again, JMO.

I would Imagine that the higher profile guys. Saban, Urban, Harbaugh, even Brian Kelly keep it together, just for simple fact of who they are. But is it really a shock to anyone that a football coach has a side piece? I mean, isn't that just the way it goes?

Honestly probably not. People cheat on their spouses. For most it has nothing to do with their job, even for a public figure like a football coach.. But as the saying goes, it’s not the crime that gets you, it’s the cover up. Like Henges said, it’s a safe bet there’s more here than is being said.
