Would you want Zaire throwing to you when you're essentially interviewing for multi-million dollar job?

Tommy Rees was kicked out of a NFL free agent tryout because his passing was so bad they could not accurately evaluate the receivers, so yeah there's hope for Zaire to complete passes against air to EQ i am sure.

True story. It was with my team.

That had to have been insanely awkward.

For human beings that would be awkward and uncomfortable. Probably not so much for the cyborgs in the NFL. They have a lot of experience telling people in much worse circumstances than Tommy to go pound sand.

so, for this cycle, did we lose out on any recruits due to the Elko and HH departures? feels like it had zero negative affect, but maybe I am forgetting some kids?

great job by the staff, this class looks great!

We might have landed NPF if Heistand hadn’t left, but who knows. I wouldn’t pin his decision on that. Early Signing Day probably helped us avoid poaching after Elko left. Bigger impact might be on the ‘19 class.
But overall, yeah, a very good class.

didn't want to start a new thread. figured I would just drop this here. A lot of praying for this family and I know a lot of folks on here know the ND/Navy tradition.

Wonder how close this will be to the AP/Coaches preseason polls.

We do have a defense coming back, but top five seems, um, optimistic.

Agreed it's a stretch as simply said, but not if the quarterback is good (and I'll take Book in that statement if others doubt [as I do] Wimbush.) If QB=good, then only one other thing is really needed for us to be potent --- that Lea knows the defense almost as well as his old boss. If so, we have the coaches in place at every level, and Lea just has to find one really good linebacker --- preferably (in my opinion) the Mike (so to leave Coney and Tranquill in their All-american homes.)

My surreal optimism is based upon faith in Eichenberg to solidify a veteran line, and the young talents to blow peoples' minds at WR. I don't view any of that as a stretch.

I went most of 2017 with the mindset that Eichenberg was the incumbent starter at LT, but now, I'm not so sure. He may not even start period. I imagine Hainsey will start at one of the tackle positions, and Aaron Banks has apparently been extremely dominant in practice from what I've heard.

It's interesting, because I would've thought that if Eichenberg was the next LT, then shouldn't they have him platoon at RT with Kraemer or Hainsey? But my guess is that Kraemer and Hainsey were just further ahead than him, and it sounds like Banks may be right up there with him too.

It was obvious to me that Big Tommy and Hainsey were NFLers to come and Eichenberg not yet in their class, so I'll take Banks if I can get him --- though maybe he's a guard and both Tommy and Hainsey the tackles. Either way, if our "new" OLine coach can do his Harry, we'll be a powerhouse upfront. We've got physical studs everywhere even with losing the two AA monsters.

... and yes I'm perpetually rosy --- feels a LOT better than perpetually irritated, depressed or angry. And fortunately for me, it's not phony: I believe it till proven wrong (and rarely see these things proved extremely wrong.)

Eichenberg played quite a few snaps last year and certainly didn’t look out of place.

If he spends the off season working hard, he will definitely see the field next year as a starter or first off the bench. And I expect he will be more than adequate.

The real test for this line will be Michigan out of the gate. Would rather have a warm up with Ball State to get their feet wet.

Agreed. I hope our game plan includes a lot of quickouts, screens and hopefully some misdirections until we can see how we are handling the pressure up front. They are going to be a very stout defense.

Newsme being a captain is a joke. He isn't even worthy of being the starting punter.

received over 50% of the votes to be a captain FROM PLAYERS...obviously they feel he does as a captain

this should be a coach appointed position but we are also talking about a head coach that let his oline pick a coach.

Have you read about some the organizations/charities he's been participating in for years? Thats awesome that he is part of these groups. But you can't give someone a position that isn't a good player.

You're the joke.

it was noted by BK that he holds the team accountable and he wanted to empower his team..pretty good reasons to me

Also, Newsome was one of the better punters in the country two years ago.

'17 was a down year, but he's got the goods when he's on

I have no problem with him as a captain, but his punting was pretty bad last year. Let's hope it was just an "off year".

That is pretty rude. Can't congratulate him.

mmm...I don't know about college, but on my high school football team the players voted for captains. I guess according to you that is not the norm.

Doesn't Kelly select the leadership committee though?
