That didn't work well for OSU, though. They stomped Michigan but lost badly to Purdue. Though Purdue isn't a power house, they have steadily improved and are starting to recruit better. I think had they lost to Michigan, they may have still had trouble getting in but only because Michigan would have taken that last spot over them and probably even OU. I would have loved Bama to kill Michigan in a big game. Oh well, Florida took care of that

Ohio State didn't get left out because they lost to Purdue and Iowa. They got left out because they got DESTROYED by Purde and Iowa.

Last year, maybe. But in 2017, Ohio State got left out because they lost to Oklahoma. If they win that game, they get a mulligan against Iowa and still sneak in as the 3rd or 4th seed with Clemson, Georgia and Bama. No one else, except Wisconsin who they beat in the Big 10 title game, is really in the mix.

Also, I'm not so sure a one-loss ND makes it in 2017. It would have come down to us vs. Alabama for the fourth spot. And we know how that tends to go.

people were making serious arguments that we should have been left out THIS year, and we were undefeated. we get shit on for not being on a conference.

Yep. Never say never. It'll vary by the year. But when I saw people, serious people, saying a Big Ten champ Michigan would have been more deserving than Notre Dame, or that Georgia should have been in last year because the "eye test," it was pretty obvious a one-loss ND team is going to have an uphill battle.

Most years, our best bet, IMO - after going undefeated, of course - is to win the big games and have our loss be close and relatively early to someone at least decent (like Virginia). When it comes time for the real voting, a "good loss" (Georgia in '17, Clemson in '15) is still a loss to a team ahead of you in the pecking order. And you don't have a conference title to fall back on.

They didn’t get in not because they lost to Purdue, rather they didn’t get in because they didn’t have any marquee wins, which is the argument used against last year once everybody on our schedule bombed for the season. OSU also looked really poor after the TCU game up until the Michigan game in which they almost lost to Nebraska and Maryland.

Just get marquee wins and your 1 loss is forgiven. Which would have been the case for us in ‘17.

Speaking of Major League, who can we use as our inspiration? I nominate Sara Jean Underwood

Some of the 2021 recruits are moving up the rankings. On 247 Fisher is top 50, Rubio is now top 100, Buckner is top 70.

I rewatched the blue gold game today. This offense gets me excited. I didn't realize how many screen passes they used and how effective they were. Book was crazy accurate again. Even his incomplete passes were not terrible passes. Just missed slightly. Jurkovic was better than I thought. He just needs to read the game better and have better pocket awareness. Overall, I am looking forward to this offense.

Good quote in here about the quality of last years team. Confirmed what I thought watching that game, mainly that we're at the cusp of becoming that top team. Interesting to see how that game played out with Julian Love in for the whole game. We had the defense to be able compete, the offense just couldn't handle that D-Line.

I would take that quote with a grain of salt. Flattering to hear that, but pretty sure it was said in jest in response to 'Bama players talking smack to Clemson at their media days, which occurred before the ACC's.

Definitely agree the flow of the game changed dramatically in the 2nd with Love went down. But Love going down didn't affect our offense and you're correct in your later statement...we couldn't do anything offensively for me to entertain the "what-if" game. If anything, the game result would have been a little more respectable but that's all.

Clemson coaches and players already said after the championship game that they thought they had better matchups against Bama. So if anything, Dylan Moses was a response to that.

ND's offense was clearly not as good as Bama's but it's hard to make a case that ND's defense did not perform significantly for the entirety of when Julian Love was on the field.

I think Bama was clearly better offensively, whereas ND was clearly better than Bama defensively with Love on the field (!).

Which really just speaks to how good Clemson was at the end of the season... they could beat you in a track meet, or in a defensive slug-it-out game.

I feel like with each year that passes, I'm gonna be bothered more and more about what could have happened had (1) that fumble recovery not been overturned after the field goal, and (2) if the offense might have settled down had Love not got hurt and the pressure hadn't built up.

My bottom line is still that I can make a defensible argument that we were the number two team in the nation last year --- regardless of the gap with Clemson. I also believe that this is why more elite HS players have been at least considering ND.

If we were an "easy" non-academics-necessary school, I believe that our recruiting would be right up with anyone's now. (We can't even consider offering most of those Clemson/ Bama, SEC, FSU, USC guys.)

Yeah consider that it was 3-3 with Love in the game. The 2nd quarter was a clinic because TL didn't have to deal with 2 lockdown corners. And to be fair, Vaughn had great position on one of the TD'S. But with Love out there, TL might not have attempted that pass. They scored a rushing TD with Love in the game. Other than that, it was 3-3. And who knows what our offense might have done if not for the overturned fumble and if we didn't go down by 3 scores in the 2nd quarter.

His Torn Labrum probably meant he was in no condition to contest jump balls unfortunately

ND and Clemson got together to pick each other's brains this past offseason. ND's takeaway was Clemson's assistants get private air travel while recruiting.

Really good piece by Pete Sampson in The Athletic about this. If ND is going to trade notes with a program, Clemson should be at the top of the list. Great stuff.

Always self audit your program and look for new ways to gain an edge.

This was an excellent article. My takeaway was recruiting on fit.

Clemson recruits program/personality fit above all else and don't stray from it; i.e. not making justifications why someone who wouldn't fit into the program should fit into the program.

I think ND was really impressed by that statement, at least from what I inferred from Pete's article.

We made the playoffs and are discussing whether or not our defense was better than Alabama's, and it's not crazy to think it was.

That's all I need to know to be happy as hell with the state of the program.
