Did any of you guys watch the documentary on the final season?

I thought it was pretty good. I liked the focus on the production folks and some of the other 'little guys,' and it was a pretty impressive job by the crew to get things in order the way they did, but I wish they would have shown a bit more of the behind-the-scenes stuff with the stars. I would've loved to see more examples of the big names taking direction during filming.

Also very cool to see Kit Harrington and Andrew McClay react with such strong emotions to their final shots during filming, despite one guy being a mega star and the other guy being a relatively unknown extra.

Had no idea that the guy who played the Night King was also their lead stunt guy. It was cool to see him basking in the success and the status of the show... he was clearly enjoying an unexpected chance to step back into the spotlight, and you could tell he truly appreciated the opportunity.

Also, props to Emilia Clark for some nice insight on the mindset when you're approaching the final days of playing a character that has largely defined you for the past 9 years. It was cool to see "Goodbye Dany, hello Emilia" on her dressing room mirror when she wrapped her shooting.

I thought it was great as well. The script reading when Varys meets his end and also Jorah. It was very cool. You don't realize the amount of work for something like this to come out though. WOW.

This was interesting to me.

At first I just thought he was overcome by emotion while hearing Clarke read the line that officially ended his run as Varys during an official reading...

But I stewed on it, and the way he closed his script packet and kind of threw it further into the table, and then just sat back, made me think he was also kind of upset at the turn of events.

Maybe he was just trying to keep his emotions in check, but it seemed like it was more than just being sad at officially reading the end to his character for the first time. I think maybe he feels the way that many people do, that his character's demise didn't really make any sense.

They start filming of the prequel next week... Working title is Bloodmoon. Sounds like it won't just be about The Long Night but may also feature Valyria and other parts of Essos

George R.R. Martin is the won who advised that Bran will be king in the books.

“David and Dan told me there were two things George R.R. Martin had planned for Bran, and that was the Hodor revelation, and that he would be king. So that’s pretty special to be directly involved in something that is part of George’s vision. It was a really nice way to wrap it up.”

This is so infuriating to read. So basically two dudes with no experience and no talent lucked into producing an amazing show... because of GRRM and the source material and some great actors. And as soon as they lost the source material and GRRM stopped helping, it all went to hell because they were completely unqualified to write the show and had no safety net anymore. Wow. Just an absolute shame. But I guess without them we never get Seasons 1-4, which were truly groundbreaking, so I'll give them sincere thanks for that.

HBO cancelled the prequel.

Edit: 1 of the 2 is cancelled. Looks like the other one is still potentially happening.

I bet it's because GRRM started to go all fanboy over the Targaryen script.

Curious to see how HBO handles a show that has a lot more fantasy than GoT did, tho.

It's worse than that tbh. George ended his involvement after D&D made some giant omissions against George's wishes. Changes that destroyed the end game of the books and what the show was building towards. So it's not that they ran out of material, they chose to not use vital things from the books because they "wanted to expand the fan base to people beyond the fantasy fan base to 'mothers and NFL players."

Some of the stuff they wrote that had no source material in the early days was amazing. Arya at Harrenhal in particular. They changed things to try and expand the fan base, and it unsurprisingly backfired when they wrote themselves into a corner and didn't give a shit to figure it out because they wanted to move on to Star Wars.

Aside from Watts, the cast was pretty lame. Hope they do better casting with HoD.

I felt kind of the same.

I worry they're going to try and save money on casting the Targaryen crew, though, because they're going to be spending a lot of money on CGI dragons, which was always a big issue for GoT prior to the final season.

If they aren't spending a lot of money on CGI dragons, it means they'll be focusing on the politics of the Targaryens arriving in Westeros moreso than showing dragons in flight, which might be a good thing in its own way.

If this is going to be a long running series they're going to want to cast mostly no name actors for a variety of reasons anyways.

I hope we get a bunch of seasons of political maneuvering and family drama. They can save the CGI budget for the last two seasons when they need to kill off a bunch of dragons lol.

My fanboi outline:

Season One - Targaryens leave Valyria and arrive at Dragonstone, announcing their intentions at conquest

Season Two - Conquest, construction of King's Landing

Season Three - Exploits to the North, failure in Dorne

Season Four - Civil War

Season Five - Lead-in to Robert's Rebellion, maybe? That's a decent time-jump


I think I have my timeline mostly right, but I need to finish 'Fire and Blood'

I'm willing to bet that getting people on board the new show is going to be much harder than HBO anticipates. Season 8 was so bad that it retroactively kind of ruined the early seasons as well. I can appreciate Season One for being objectively excellent, but its hard to watch even the first few seasons when you know that nothing is going to end up mattering. Clever reference to Jon's parentage? Fuck you. Three eyed raven dream? Fuck you. The things I do for love? Fuck you. The whole TV universe has a stink to it now, and I don't think people are going to be nearly as excited to watch a prequel to a world that everyone knows has a stupid endpoint.
