I agree with this especially. I lived on property adjacent to the North Shore State Trail. Hop on my sled, go to Grand Marais for some Sven & Ole's Pizza.

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/SY1_MRycPUA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

that video is exactly what we did during our trip out there in between the cabins/lodges. majestic trails everywhere. i think we ended up travelling over 200 miles on snowmobiles-and loved every minute of it.

and not a peep from the wightwalkers or the Others

i was invited by one of my vendors to head out your way (Minnesota right?) about 10 years ago to go on a weeklong snowmobile expedition in late february.

it was FANTASTIC!

If you want to try it again I suggest you check out something closer to home. The Adirondacks, in particular the area around Big Moose Lake – Old Forge, Eagle Bay, etc. They do up the whole snowmobiling thing right.

I've heard that some resorts, restaurants, bars and such make more money from winter visitors than summer visitors.

THIS. I grew up near Chicago, and saw winters as bad as these last two, but we never missed school because the infrastructure (bus routes/stops, etc.) and city plowing systems were far more prepared for weather of this type.

Indy simply isn't. The city spent it's entire salt/plow budget last year in less than two weeks when "Hercules" came.

Could you elaborate on what infrastructure differences you perceive between Minneapolis and Indy that would help ameliorate cold conditions? I'm also curious as to which city you looked up in Alaska, since there are significant differences between the main three cities.

A lot of people don't realize it, but there's a difference in weather when you compare Indy and Chicago. From about Peru, Indiana and north the area is much more like Chicago, because it gets the "lake effect". Except for the occasional hit, winters in Indy are fairly mild. The average high in January is 33 and we don't normally get the same amount of snow as Chicago. It was about 6 degrees with a wind chill around -10 when I woke up.

I love reading the Facebook posts from native Floridians whining that it's too cold. Boo hoo.

Eff that. I love winter. The cross country skiing, downhill skiing, the ice fishing, the snowball fights, swinging flies for steelhead as snow falls all around you, and even the simple things like sitting by the fire with my ol' lady. Change is good. It keeps the soul fresh and slows down this busy life we live.

One day I would like to get a place down south to vacation and get the occasional shag nasty out. But I wouldn't want to live in constant warm weather. I need the change of seasons and the feeling that every day holds something new. See the changing of nature that allows me to catch trout one day, tap a maple another and find a morel on a brisk rainy morning. Those memories can't happen when the landscape never changes.

Plus, the soul inherently needs work in my opinion. Whether that be splitting wood, shoveling the driveway or simply solving the logistical problems of weather. They are all important cogs that keep me focused. I'm sure for some people the ease of always being sunny and warm is comforting. For me, it's a prison of boredom.

Wooly lobbying again for the copy writer position at J. Peterman.

Only about 6" of snow overnight, but gusting winds this AM. Major highway shut down this AM right around the corner do to a 90 car/semi pile up. Some fatalities and currently a semi loaded with 40,000 pounds of fireworks is burning in the middle of it.

Mars was warmer than much of the U.S. today | Daily Mail Online

Time to stop remarking about how unearthly cold it is outside because on Thursday, Mars was actually warmer than many parts of the U.S.

The daytime high in the red planet's Gale Crater, as recorded by NASA's curiosity Rover, was 17.6 degrees F - a whopping 11 degrees warmer than the 6-degree high in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Temperatures in fourteen states from Washington to Maine reported temperatures colder than Mars, as a brutal blast of Arctic air sweeps the country.

Updated to 115 cars. 1 confirmed fatality. Besides the 40k pounds of fireworks burning there is now a hazardous material tanker on fire. They've evacuated a 3 mile radius.

I miss ice fishing, especially if you have an ice house. You, a friend, beer, propane heater, a hole, and tiny fishing poles.

My absolute favorite alone time was shoveling snow either very late at night or very early in the morning.

I miss winter ...

I just shoveled my driveway and noticed my 92 year old neighbor trying to do theirs. So I went and did theirs too.

I might pass out.

Four years in MN and never went, regrettably. I'm still blown away by how thick the ice gets. I visited Lake Itasca in February and it was something like 2 meters thick, unbelievable.

Better you than him. If he passes out, he may not wake up.
