It's in the high 70s here today. It's going to be in the 70s all next week...too bad I decided to plan my trip back home to Minnesota where it's going to be a balmy 1 degree most days.

Send some of your snow to us. We are WAY below normal for snowfall. That affects skiing, as well as snow removal businesses. 2014 was also the first year in Anchorage's history in which the temperature never once dropped below zero. The last couple of days have been sunny and beautiful, which in the winter means cold (single digits at night). Some great Aurora displays too. Stay warm, and stay safe.

I have a 110ft two car wide driveway. It cost $50 to get it plowed IF I can get someone to do it. Most guys with blades want to do parking lots so I have to wait. That's why I finally got a snow blower.

My line on an inexpensive wood burning insert fell through, so i'm slumming this year with a fireplace. It is not cutting it. My house is too big to heat with gas only and the wood burning fireplace just isn't making a dent. My bill is going to outrageous this month. Hell, we have a high of 9 degrees today. That's before windchill!

"Gas" like natural gas? I thought natural gas was next to free. My POS state has virtually zero pipelines so I get to pay for heating oil to heat the downstairs and electricity to heat the upstairs.

Yikes. That would be bogus.
Natural gas went up around here for some reason. My gas bill was $170 last month, and it was pretty mild in December. This is the first storm we have really gotten with multiple days under freezing. I also use gas for all of my appliances.
Some of it I suppose is a first world problem. I have a 3000 sq foot house, covered in leaky windows, on top of a bluff getting pounded relentlessly by wind.
A simple wood burning insert would solve this problem though. I have plenty of wood on my property, and right now I have a season of wood stacked. All I am missing is a stove to heat up.

Currently 7 in Indy. School was closed, but just got a text from my daughter. My granddaughters HS B-Ball game is still on. Priorities! lol
P.S. Finally got to use my new snow blower. Took me less than 30 minutes to get it cleared.

It is. They got two hour delays all last year for what I considered to be nothing. Kids these days...
It's brisk down here. But the locals are whining and complaining about the cold and I laugh at them.

I thought so until last year, when two students had to go to the hospital with frostbite. It's the kids waiting for the bus in the morning that's the issue, some have to wait 30+ minutes after they get dropped off at it. Most just wear hoodies, and quite a few don't even own coats. Not everything is a testosterone fueled d-ck measuring contest. Safety is important.

Not really. It's more likely that the schools will be closed due to cold rather than snow here.
Waiting for the school bus at 10 below is not healthy (or safe) for the kids.
It's not a lot of fun for the adults who ride the bus to and from work --- but that's why we get the big bucks.

How is closing schools when the wind chill is under zero "soft"? It takes less than 30 minutes for exposed skin to get frostbitten at that temperature. With kids walking to school, people possibly getting stranded in broken down cars, etc. Why would a school risk everyone's children for that? Especially with all of the at home technology we have now?
If you tough guys are so tough, go stand outside without a hat or gloves for thirty minutes and report back.
You want your kid put in that possible position?

I won't go into too many details and turn this into a political debate, but not every child has responsible parents, and that number goes up exponentially when you are looking at children from poverty.

I have and had no problem. Extremely cold temperatures? I have no problems shielding kids from those, but there were several times that the IPS had 2 hour delays last year where I was extremely confused by the decision. It wasn't below 0, even with wind chill. That's when kids need to be protected, but last year it seemed like IPS was being overly cautious and the kids later paid for it by making up the time lost.

Okay so if 7 is too cold for safety in Indianapolis, what do you all suggest they do in the parts of Maine, Minnesota, and Alaska where those temperatures are normal averages? Those kids would never be in school.
